vinyl vs. plastidip...

OK, so I have been toying with the idea of wrapping my hood. With the exceptions of a couple of very small rock nicks, my paint is still in exceptional condition, and I would like to try and keep it that way for as long as possible. I spend a fair amount of time exploring areas less traveled and I am thinking that some paint protection is in order. On top of this, I also get the occasional glare off the hood scoop at certain times of day. While this does not really bother me, it's enough to get me thinking.
I know a handful of you have gone the vinyl route, and I love the look, just not the cost. has anyone here plastidipped their hood instead? What would be the plusses vs. the minusses? I am under the understanding that like vinyl, plastidip is completely reversible. True? Ready, break! :snacker:

I would use vinyl for the hood. That's a LOT of plastidip and it's not that resilient.

It definitely is a good amount of plastidip, esp since I have also been toying with the idea of doing the roof to match, but there are kits out there that are more than reasonably priced, considering I don't trust myself to wrap anything so I'd be paying someone else to do that

I have vinyl hood and have used plasti dip on several things and while both are great, I would go with vinyl on the hood in a heart beat.

There is a risk with plastidip of over coating and getting blobs in patched areas. while most of it blend out, if you do get a blob or two, that would drive me nuts.

To answer your question- Yes, plastidip would be completely reversible. It is pretty darn durable too- it's been on my wheels for well over a year now and is holding up astonishingly well!

I removed it because I didn't like the look. If you are careful you can spray the hood with no streaking (I explain it in the link). People paint their entire cars with the stuff- there is even a plastidip forum. I will be doing the entire hood next time I get bored!

Here is a link to when I helped Kraeken cover his hood in 3M Vinyl. Not too hard, but about 1000 times harder than the plastidip and 100% more expensive.

My advice- buy $10 worth of plastidip and give it a shot. If it doesn't turn out like you want, remove it and your only out 10 bucks versus $70-$300 for the vinyl (if you pay someone else to do it)

I would go with the vinyl wrap. I was thinking about getting mine done until I saw the price, $380-$425. That was the price I was quoted in an email, they wanted me to come in to get measurements on my hood for a better price quote. To pricey for me right now.

Ha, good 'ole antman. I would rather go with vinyl myself, due to the almost infinite possibilities of colors and glosses (I want more of a satin black than a matte), but the fact of the matter is, I don't want to spend the kind of money necessary to have someone do it for me, nor on the materials to practice through trial and error. Unless of course there are some huge advantages to going with vinyl. While I'm no professional, I have a good amount of experience painting on DIY projects and feel confident that I could lay down even coats if that is the direction that i chose to go with

I have not worked much with Plastidip but I've used the vinyl wrap on a few of my vehicles with great success. It also helps if you use a hair dryer when working with the vinyl in order to get it to form well.

Prior to my Toyota days, I was an avid Audi (still am) fan. The founder of this site (http://www.dipyourcar.com) was also an Audi guy and really kick-started the Plasti Dip movement on the B8 S4's.....He has a lot of experience with Plasti Dip and I would suggest you contact him if you choose to go that route...he's a great dude and can offer tips/tricks, etc....

I saw him do one in flat black, got me thinking, I have some really deep scratches in my paint from tight trail runs. I just saw they make a Camo tan & camo green. Both colors I thought about doing as a vinyl, but may just have to give dipping the whole thing a try lol.

sorry for the old thread bump. Trying to search around I want to wrap or dip the lighter colored front and rear bumpers on mt 2014 magnetic trail to make it look more uniform. Does anyone have color samples of dip or vinyl that match best with Magnetic Grey?
