I know that it is Oracal, but not sure which type/product number it is. I am alright with gloss any way, doesn't bother me
Oracal is one of the best brands. We used it extensively for many years.
Not sure why he says he can't do matte. They have quite a few options in matte...

I have questions about the line-x if you don't mind. I thought of doing the same thing to my 2016 Quicksand TRD Pro. Yours is the first one I've see so far. I really like it. Wondering what they charged you to do it? Did you do the UV protection? How's it holding up on the plastic? Thanks in advance. BTW... good luck on your decision with the wrap.

Re-reading your original post, it sounds like the shop is not doing a full wrap, but more just straight-line graphics, such as a lower valance wrap or wide hood stripe wrap. Is that the case, or is he going to wrap the whole vehicle for you?
As for "new" type of vinyl, if it IS Oracal, the only vinyl that's new in their series, and not digital print stuff like you said, its the new 970RA "premium shift effect cast" vinyl! Neat stuff, but I dunno if I'd wrap a 4 runner in any of the available colors! Here's what you will be able to choose from (in either matte or gloss):
Green Blue
Turquoise Lavender
Aubergine Bronze
Might wanna call your friend and ask him if this is the stuff he's thinking of wrapping your 4r with! If its just the standard 970RA, you can pick any color you want, their charts for 970RA is on their website, http://www.orafol.com/.
Is this shop trained in doing vehicle wraps? I'd make sure they've done at least a few before working on your $40K vehicle! A non-trained person can really do some damage to your paint if they are either sloppy (which most shops are when they're doing stuff for free) or new to the wrapping game. Taking a knife to the body of your vehicle can introduce a good amount of paint damage, and in worse case scenarios, a great spot for rust to start. Seen it all too many times, several were even in car shows.
Not saying your friend doesn't know what he's doing, but just a friendly warning from someone who's been doing this stuff for years.

I know that there is matte out there that he can get, but this particular vinyl only comes in gloss. Still, i actually prefer the gloss as it is.

Ran without it for about a week and couldn't stand the wind noise anymore and threw it on. Amazing what a difference a piece of plastic makes.

Guess I should have specified and said vinyl is new to him, not to Oracal. It was a vinyl I guess he just has never ordered or had to order and wants to give it a shot. It will eventually be a full wrap, but doing it in stages. He has been in the business for over 15 years and mainly does emergency vehicles (police, fire, ambulance) but does full vehicle wraps for all sorts of businesses. I definitely trust him to do the job right.

Here is my full 3M Satin Pearl White vinyl wrap with a matte black roof and matte black horizontal bumper pieces. It turned out really good and I love the finish of the 3M satin. I am the photographer for my buddies company (pro photos to come...just had the iphone yesterday) and fully trust him with all the work he did. They go the full route with taking off door handles, headlights, bumpers, trim pieces, mirrors...to essentially wrap around all of the pieces.
We were playing around with a few hood accents but I dont think I am 100% sold on the black stripe with his logo

If you want the logo there but not to stand out like that, put it under the wrap. Creates an embossed effect but isn't in your face.
yea, we have played around with that....was initially going to put decals on the bottom of the rear doors to have an embossed look but forgot before install.
most likely removing that black hood piece here this afternoon and sticking with just the pearl white right now.
as much as I love repping my good buddies company, my wife doesn't quite understand why its there. ha

Was gonna suggest the same thing! That's what we did to Brian's (Tigger) hood, using the old Toyota logo. Just used some laminated vinyl to give it a thick lip for that embossed look!
They did a nice job from what I can see. And yes, that is the PROPER way to do a wrap, removing everything from the body, wrapping it, then installing all those parts back onto the vehicle. This is what separates a professional wrap from the cheap jobs that many shops do. Its also the difference of cheap vs. expensive, and yes, you really do get what you pay for!
