Volant vibration/resonance on V8 Sport

Capping the front port and sealing the intake tube to the box made a big difference to the amount of resonance and vibration generated when stepping on the gas (according to my calibrated ears :D).

Previously I would mainly hear the intake and now I mainly hear the exhaust from the Gibson CATback.

I'll try removing the cap on the way home to see if the resonance comes back.

It is probably quieter but what you are now doing is making it just like the stock air box with a high flow filter. When you restrict things usually they are quieter. So while you have made it quieter you are also more likely restricting the air flow or messing with how the unit was designed to work in a bad way.

I don't know why you guys cap that off even when Volant tells you not to. Email them once and ask them about that hole. Multiple people have questioned it but for some reason nobody wants to believe Volant. They only design and manufacture the product so what do they know. This is what they will tell you. The box does draw cold air in from the fender well. The air intake hole is considerably bigger than the other hole. Volant says that the CAI draws in more air than needed. The second, smaller hole allows excess air to be evacuated, preventing turbulence in the box and reduced performance. Air seeks it's own pathway, so the large hole will draw it in and the smaller one will pass it out, not vice versa. Plugging the smaller hole will not only hurt the performance but also go against how the intake was designed to perform.

If the sound bothers you that much, I would just go back to the stock air box with a high flow drop in filter.

im not trying to debate anyone, but if those of us that have put a cap on the front dont feel a power lose or any other problems, why should anyone else care? people can do whatever they want to their own stuff. either way, volant now put a cap on the new taco box, & thats where the hose to the scoop is attached, so there must be a reason for it or at least it doesnt hurt anything, but personally, i dont care.

I suppose I should had provided my reasons for sealing the box because it wasn't for sound...mainly commenting on the sound because the thread's title. (attempting to post something related to the thread title).

My first reason for sealing is to prevent water, mud and other foreign objects into the airbox while off road. The second reason is in preparation for a snorkle at some point for off road (less dust, water, etc). The stock air box is sealed, but Volant provides more surface area for filtration and the intake tube is smoothed for better air flow. Volant also positioned the box further forward providing more room for a second battery behind it.

I think Volant must of been over budget on the BOM and ran out of ideas for the intake tube to box seal, so they settled cheap and dirty. At least that is fixed now.

For the front opening, the selected plug is nice since it can come on and off easily depending on what is needed. Might be interesting to plumb this port to allow air from the front of the grill, but that will be for another day...

The Taco doesn't have a V8 so that may possibly be the difference, I am not sure?? You can do what you want but all I am saying is if it was a good idea, then either 1. Volant would have it sealed up initially or 2. Volant would say, "sure that is fine to to block", not tell us that it hurts the performance. Also as far as doing what you want, that is fine also but why waste money on the Volant intake when you are basically putting it back to what the OEM unit was.

I don't have proof that leaving it open is better and I don't think anyone has proof that plugging it up doesn't do anything. However if a manufacture tells me it hurts performance if I plug it then I would trust them over some people on a forum.

I get sealing the box to keep debris out and the room for an additional battery. However wouldn't you want to seal the fender hole then? Because according to Volant, that is the hole that is actually sucking everything in vs the one in front. I also get the Volant having more filter area vs OEM but I think you would have to be running at pretty high RPMs to notice the difference. The only reason I say that is because that is where the Volant makes power vs the OEM. I think it was at like 4K and up??

I wondered about where the pipe enters the Volant box, much like you did. I wondered if they kept it loose because the motor moves enough that the tube going into the box couldn't be "fixed" to the air box?? You will have to keep us up to date if your fix ends up cracking or coming loose.

for some reason it seems to bother u when someone "modifies" a manufactures product, in this case volant, yet u did a mod to a manufacturers product (toyota) by installing the volant. im sure u have heard from people on this forum that no matter what the graph u showed in another thread produced , adding an aftermarket cai does next to nothing & is a waste of money since the toyota engineers have already produced the best design possible for the v8. i see nothing wrong with someone changing something a bit to better suite them or the way they drive, if it works for them. hey its just a cap, the vec. not throwing a light or code , the engines not blowing up, & the worlds not coming to an end. i get it, u dont think its right, but to each his own, anyway, im not gonna take up anymore of the op thread on this. :sadwave::cheers:

Chaz it obviously does bother you that I don't agree with your mod. I am not trying to argue with you but you seem to be upset about me just stating simple facts. Toyota never told me that adding the Volant or any other intake will decrease performance. However Volant DID tell us that plugging that hole will decrease performance of their intake design. You show how the intake for the V6 is plugged, well we are talking about the V8. I state that the Volant vs OEM makes power higher in the RPM's. What makes you so upset about the truth, do what you want but at least let others have an opinion also.

True people have said that the Volant is a waste of money even though dyno results proved otherwise. That is my point also, I don't believe everyone on a forum. I would rather base my decisions on factual information or information that comes from a manufacture about their own product vs someone on a forum. That is all I am saying.

When first getting the Volant 3+ years ago I noticed Toyota did a better job of a true CAI. It is sealed better and air pulls only from the fenderwell.

Volant did a better job of increasing air flow. A larger non-corregated intake tube and more surface area with the air filter. When the filter starts to fill up, there is more free surface area to meet intake demands.

Sealing the Volant box is finishing where Volant left off and reaching the Toyota standard.

If I were to do it over again, I would add a high flow filter to the stock box and put a CAT back on with the remaining $250 I had. I was going for gas economy and gained some performance only.

I wonder if the increase in sound is a reason Volant didn't seal the box better. Call it a marketing tactic...sounds like it's going faster. Adding another port for more flow makes sense to increase air flow...it's just not a CAI that way. Not sealing the box/tube better is just poor design IMO.

Had some down time so I finished sealing the box to the fenderwell.

Before

After with 3/4 closed cell weatherstrip.
I was afraid the weatherstrip would come off the box so I used electrical tape to keep it in place. If installing a new Volant it would make sense to use the supplied seal for this port as another earlier in this thread did.

The new seal box/tube done previously holding up solid. Was able to pull the tube out and feed it back in w/o any issue. RTV worked well.

Just a follow up at about 7 months post mod. No cracking or deterioration of any kind. I cap the from hole when off road and uncap when on the street.

Vibration/resonance is gone and still has great pick up and sounds great when the pedal is down.
