I have a 2002 toyota 4 runner Limited and the VSC and check engine light keeps coming on. computer diagnostic gives the codes C1201 (ECM) and P1135(oxygen Sensor) I understand I have to replace the O2 Sensor. Does this mean I have to replace the ABS ECM as well or is there something else I should try prior to replacing it? any ideas of where i could find the ECM?

I got the same VSC TRAC/ VSC OFF problem too. The funny thing is that this started after i took my truck to the mechanic to have my fuel tank and injector cleaned. I have taken it back twice to have it checked again and they keep saying that it doesnt give any codes and there is nothing wrong with the truck.
I dont belive them and i think they messed up something while dropping the tank and cleaning the injector.
What do you guys think? I need to get back armed with evidence

2002 4runner VSC TRAC/ VSC OFF
This was finally resolved on my 4runner by changing both of my O2 Sensors. Once the check engine light immediately went out so did the vsc trac and vsc off. Ironically the Codes went away as well. The o2 sensor had to be from the dealer. The ones ordered from elsewhere were cheaper but did not work at all. Bothe sensors were approx 320.00 and my mechanic charged 60.00 to install them. Not bad at all to get rid of that problem which I have had for quite some time. No need to chane the ECU now. By the way the ECU
must be set by the dealer. Even if I could have found a place to repair or replace, the dealer is the one who can set the alarm code so that it will work with the vehicle... Good Luckjavascript:smilie(':awais:')

Thanks for the info Nedlob. But based on the work done by the mechanics on my ride, what do you think the problem most likely could be? If i were to drop the fuel tank and flush the injector, would there be a chance that i could be tampering with the 02 sensor?

Lol! Dont get it twisted 96dcmss. They did two different things.
They suspected that i had contaminated fuel so they had to flush the injectors and also clean the fuel tank.

oh ok, got it now. Naija - is the check engine light on along with the VSC light? Only thing I can think of that they may have done is leave a wire, or hose off....or maybe damage a wire or connector......but most likely for the EVAP system, since that has to do with the fuel system.

Just the VSC TRAC and VSC OFF lights come on whenever the truck gets in motion. I really need to know what could have been tampered with so that i confront them with undeniable fact.

They same things been happening with my 2001. Mine stated a couple days ago I reset the CPU but it came back. I was looking at the forums; and I know how O2 sensors fix the check engine light but I don't know how they fix the VSC/TRAC lights I really don't want to spend 320 bucks and still have the other lights.

You need to get it scanned and see what is going on. It may just need to be calibrated. There is a thread that tells you how to do it, or the dealer can. Sounds like something is wrong with the calibration, or maybe a wheel speed sensor, or signal problem. Since you don't have a check engine light on, it is a VSC problem.
Most likely nothing to do with the work that was done on your truck, unless there is a damaged, or pinched wire. First thing to do is try the recalibration yourself, it's free. If that doesn't work go have it checked out by the dealer or any shop that is capable of pulling codes out of the ABS/VSC module.

That was a good link Falkon. My problem ended up being that the wife just left the gas cap too loose though. I had a check engine light with the vsc/trac lights. It is weird that all those lights come on together though.

The way it was explained to me is that once the check engine situation occurs, the system automatically shuts down the VSC to reduce any additional strain on the engine until it can be resolved.
You want to hear another weird one? My wife's Sequoia had the VSC Off and VSC Trac lights come on and the solution was to replace the front brake pads and then disconnect the battery for 20 minutes. All this occurred after putting on new studded tires for the winter. Add to that the check engine light comming on due to oil build up from my K & N on my MAS and you can really screw yourself up trying to figure it out! What a pain.

The quote was for $2,000 plus labor and we are not sure if we would like to do this. We went to Autozone to check the error code and the code recommend us to replace the O2 sensors. Well, to date we have replaced both O2 sensors and the check engine light is ON again. We also have noticed that whenever we hit a "BUMP" this check engine lights comes on. PLEASE help!! We need advise soon!

I drove it another 5000 miles and they came on again. This time, I had the catalytic converters replaced. I also mentioned having the 02 sensors replaced, but my mechanic didn't see the point of spending the money since they apparently were ok. I had the catalytic converters replaced in January 2012.
I thought everything was fine until yesterday.....guess what? The lights are back on! It drives fine....runs fine, sounds fine.

So my 06 4runner sr5 4.7 has a check engine light, vsc off, vsc Trac, and traction light on. Had it scanned and is popping P0174, p0171, c1253, c1249, c1246, c1223, c1201 codes. Any ideas.
