VSC on/off, VSC Trac, Traction Control AND ABS Lights on.

Hey guys, bought a 05 4runner a few months back and this place has been great at helping me getting it back to peak performance. That said, and I have read ALL the thread about this topic, but this thread fits me the closest. I was driving to work this morning and while driving my vsc off, vsc trac, abs, and stability lights all came on. This was about a minute after disengaging the 4x4, however I believe that is an accepted practice. I got to my adjunct teaching job and when leaving the lights went off briefly and then came back on between there and my full-time job at a car dealership. Luckily, the dealership had a used 07 that I tried swapping the switch under the brake pedal, however it does not seem to fix anything. I have also tried tightening the gas cap, disconnecting the battery, and zero point method also with no success. Does anyone have any other thoughts?

Btw, I ran my personal code reader and it yielded no codes? I thought that strange....

Same issue with me, I took apart the brake light switch and cleaned it... seems to be making good continuity, but still not working. I ordered a new one to try and I'll update how it goes when it comes in. Guess I need to buy a reader that reads abs codes now.

Well I supposed i'll glom onto this thread too. I've been fighting the VSC/ABS lights since Christmas.

The day after driving through some deepish snow I got the VSC off/ VSC Trac/ABS/Brake lights after driving a few minutes. Some quick googling found the loose gas gap fix so I hit a gas station, filled up and tightened cap. No change, but a few miles later my cruise control quit (cruise light flashed a few times) speedo/odo quit and CEL came on. At this point I'm 20 miles into a 130 mile drive home. Drove the rest of the way in this state.

I pulled the code and got a P0500 speed sensor. But a couple days later the speedo/odo started working and the code cleared. All the VSC/ABS/Brake lights still on. I borrowed my friends techstream setup about the time the lights all went away on their own. After a week of the lights coming on for about 5 mintues of my commute then going out before I could get the techstream on it I was finally able to get C0215 Rear Speed Sensor LH Circuit and C1223 ABS Control System Malfunction. At this point I'm able to reset zero point and everything goes away for a day or two. When the lights came back again, I decided to pull the sensor to clean it. There was some corrosion in the connector so I hit it with some DeoxIT and tried to get as much of the crust off as I could, put it back together and now the lights are on constantly and won't clear. I bought a cheapie sensor and put it in with no change.

If you're still with me, I put a meter on everything today since it was warm and have 12v in the harness with ign so there's not a break in that. I checked the sensors and the original has a higher resitance but still blips voltage when you wave metal past it. When I drive around logging the sensors, LH rear reads zero with either sensor (other 3 normal of course). Ever since I got the consistent LH Circuit problem I can't do a zero point calibration with the techstream.

I'm looking for something else to try before I break down and buy a sensor from Toyota or totally throw in the towel and let them fix.

I’m having the same problem. When I start my vehicle the VSC/Trac light are off but as soon as I put it into reverse or drive and let my foot off the brake the lights come on. Would it be my brake light switch? Even though my brake lights work fine?

Mine was doing the same thing. Replacing the switch fixed it.

Take this for what its worth. I had a dealer try and chase down the vsc/abs ect lights. They had zero clue. They wanted to replace all the sensors and the abs control module. Give it a shot!

Yup. Brake light switch fixed it for me.
If your at all handy, your done before finishing this sentence.
Less that five minutes if you don't know what your doing.

BRAKE!, VSC OFF, VSC TRACK ABS Lights

Long time lurker. Finally found something I haven't been able to figure out.
Was wheeling yesterday and set up as an anchor for someone to winch off. Put the e-brake on, and basically stood on the brake pedal.

5 minutes later my
BRAKE!, VSC OFF, VSC TRACK ABS Lights all came on. No check engine, no buzzing. I've tried the zero calibration thing but stop after the touching the wires together 4 times because of the ABS and the VSC OFF flash intermittently.

I checked the gas gap, checked the brake fluid (its slightly over full)

Took it to get the codes read and got :

C0125
C1223
C1336

I had them flash the codes but they came right back on.

I've tried leaving the battery disconnected for 10 minutes multiple times.

My rear brake lights work fine. Could it still be this sensor on the brake pedal? I don't want to go replacing parts unnecessarily but am at a loss as of now.

Mine was doing something similar. I had the "VSC OFF" "VSC TRAC" and the slip indicator light on all at once and the slip indicator would blink and a beep would sound for about 10 seconds as soon as I started moving. My mechanic fixed replaced the driver's side CV axle with the abs sensor and reset the zero point of the computer. Normally I would do this work myself but I didn't know how to or want to reset the zero point myself. Good as new. Here's a video I took of what was happening to my truck: YouTube

I'm having a similar issue with my 04 4x4 V6. My wife was driving yesterday when it started. I showed her your video this morning and she said the beeping lasts longer than yours and goes on and off before switching to the VSC OFF and VSC TRAC lights.

I wondering why you needed a cv axle and an abs sensor? I would think those would be separate issues right?

I'm going to see if there are any codes tonight and do a zero point calibration. If that doesn't fix it I think I'll try to figure out which abs wheel speed sensor could be failing.

Does anyone know if there is a code reader that can also read wheel speeds? I have a BAFX OBD Bluetooth reader ordered, but I'm not sure if there is an app to go with it that can read ABS info.

Same issue. 2005 SR5 V6

Have owned the truck for years with no issues.

I have a techstream and can see that it is indicating that I have RR wheel speed sensor malfunction. When I watch the live values I can see that the other wheels show speed readings, but the RR does not. Replaced the sensor, no impact. Swapped with the known good FR sensor, no change in issue. Did the brake light switch. Verified brake fluid level. Did the vsc zero out procedure. I'm down to thinking that it is the ABS/VSC module but I cannot find it. I have the Alldata DIY subscription and it indicates that there is a module in the dash above the e-brake pedal. Nope.

Can anyone tell me where the ABS/VSC module is on a 2005?

Have the Wheel Speed Sensor checked!

you might want to have the Wheel Speed Sensor checked too, unfortunately, it is this Da**n piece that can run you about 300USD (this for my 2019 TRD Pro). It seems I had the worst luck and hit something on my way home and it turned out to have damaged the stupid sensor (I do remember hearing a loud bang before the lights got lit on my dashboard) . The lights I had on were ABS, Break, 4LO, Select Terrain, Anti-slip and 4WD-engagement.

For my 2004 v6 sport I am finding the part number to be 84340-09310 and the name is "stop lamp switch".

I had the same issue on my 08 4runner 2wd for about 6 months/10k mikes. Removing wiping and blowing off the brake switch fixed it for me.

2003 SR5 V6 217k miles, had the same issues

• ABS light on
• TRAC on/off lights on

-Tried Zero reset
-Battery cable off over night
-No Codes to be read
-No blown fuses
-Shifter finally locked in park after after about a month of lights being on.


Brake lights still worked but replaced brake switch anyways and voila all is well

Another data point:

2007 4Runner SR5 V6

VSC, VSC Trac, Traction Control and ABS lights all on simultaneously. Occurred intermittently, seemingly when it was hot outside. (>90F)

Used LELink^2 bluetooth OBDII reader with Torque to scan for codes. No codes found.

Replaced the brake light switch with the OEM part from dealership. (PN 84340-69025) Problem has not recurred.

Perhaps somebody will find this useful.

I've been having this issue the last couple days, a quick search found this thread which is helpful. I pulled the switch, took it apart and cleaned the contacts with very fine sandpaper so they shined again. One contact set was very pitted so that one got extra attention but all were in need of cleaning. I then added some contact grease and put it back together. No issues today. The pitting means that the switch life is not long at this point but wanted a smoking gun as the say. If anyone is curious, this switch has 2 switches built in. One is shorted when not in use and the other is open, depress the pedal and they flip. One has some heavy leads, I assume that one has load across it where the other one may be only to test the connection.

I joined this forum so I could say thanks to all, (hopefully), learning about what likely is causing my 2003 V6 4Runner’s VCS-TRAC, VCS OFF, ABS and !BRAKE dash lights to come on and stay on, like so many others have experienced. I thus far have just have turned the truck off & on until they would stay off, usually after a couple try’s, but want it fixed for good. I just picked up the “brake light switch” from local Toyota dealer ($30), haven’t had time to try installing it. The Parts guy advised me to put it in just so the button is slightly pressed in, not jamming it in.
My questions to all that have successfully done the install, is 1...can I leave the original brown plastic “nut” in place, and just put the new switch in? I didn’t realize how “tight” space-wise things are down there. 2...Should I depress the brake to take pressure off the switch when removing/installing? I’m no mechanic by any stretch, and apprehensive about doing what sounds like many of you could do with your eyes closed. But if it means saving ”diagnostics” (for something I now am pretty sure about) & labor charges I’ll give it a try. 3...do I just put new switch in until it “touches”, then rotate to lock in place? 4...can anything go wrong/be dangerous if I screw it up? (I read the switch works along with the cruise control so that freaks me out a bit.)
Thanks again to all the above posters for pointing me in the right direction and making expensive diagnostics unnecessary (hopefully). Will advise results when completed...

It's actually pretty easy to do and I don't think this Toyota model even uses the supplied nut. Twist it a quarter turn and it comes out, literally takes less than 5 mins if you've done it once before. Just take note of the orientation of the old one. Check out the video below or others similar if needed. BTW, this did not fix my issue which only happens when it's damp out. I think I may have a wheel speed sensor on the way out.
