VSC / TRAC - Troubles:

DRC

I have a 08 4Runner v6 and we got our first snow / ice of the season this past week. With this I have been noticing some issues with the VSC / TRAC system. This is in 4h as I leave it in 4h all winter. It seems to have become hyper sensitive. On several occasions a gentle acceleration while on snow / ice, no tire spin, has engaged the VSC / TRAC and cut power to the engine. I know how the system works as I have owned the truck for 7 years now and driven in lots of snow / ice. Normally when I start getting tire spin then the system would engage and I would hear / feel the brake actuator clicking and the power is cut. Usually the dash light would light up for a few seconds also. However what’s happening now is different. When trying a gentle acceleration, barley touching the gas with no tire spin that I know of, the system is engaging and cutting the engine power. The brake actuator is not clicking and the VSC light on the dash is not coming on, just the engine power is being cut. This lasts for about 2 – 3 seconds and I usually have to remove my foot from the gas pedal and then press it again before it will regain power. There is definitely something funky going on with this as this is not normal for my truck.

I did some reading and found some talk about YAW Calibration, aka Zero Point Calibration. One post described the same issue I am having but in a 3rd gen: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/46131-01-4runner-traction-control-problem.html and this article talks about the calibration steps: Yaw Rate and Acceleration Sensor Zero Point Calibration - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum which I think are valid for a 4th gen.

For the zero point calibration what I read is that it’s needed if the VSC light remains lite all the time or after doing a lift. I don’t have any dash lights on and the only change that has been done to my truck is a new battery about a month ago. Could having the battery disconnected for 5 minutes require a reset of this system? Has anyone experienced a “hyper sensitive” VSC /. TRAC and resolved it with the calibration? Other suggestions are welcome!

On the 2003-4 removing the battery would delete the zero point calibration, not sure on your year. It can't hurt to do it just follow the directions for a 4th gen. Make sure you're on level ground.
Then try it in the snow again.

Has your truck been to the dealer/in for service recently? Not sure if the Smart Stop Technology campaign, where the dealer flashes your ECU, sometimes without bothering to tell you, could be the cause of this.
