VSS Sim. all nav functions while in motion

When I bought this truck I really didn't want the navigation system. I use it much more than I ever imagined that I would. However, the lockout of destination input while in motion as well as the USB browse folders lockout sent me on search of the internet for a solution.
As with some of my best work, I stole it! All creative engineering credit belongs to the originator.

This device will replace the vehicle VSS signal (4 pulses per wheel revolution) with a simulated pulse of about 700+/400-ms which is interpreted by the NAV as ~4-7 mph. Lockout occurs at about 10 mph.
It should only be used for short periods of time since the NAV relies on the VSS as well as satellite info for tracking. When activated, the position will drift and lag. Once the real signal is restored, normal tracking returns in a few seconds.

These wires are 2010 4Runner specific, it will also work with other Toyota Nav systems but the wire locations and colors may vary.

These are the pieces and parts required. Plus some sort of a non-conductive box to put it in. I used a bar soap box just to be classy.

This is the best layout that I could design. There is a lot of crossing over the chip that maybe could be improved upon. Hey, it works.

The Relay is really optional. You could change it up and use a DPDT switch to save some space and a few bucks. I just didn't want the + voltage running back and forth all the time. In theory, the relay will give a fail safe where the 'real' input from the vehicle VSS is sent if something craps out.

I've set this up with Cat5 ethernet connections at the board and switch which should make it easier to put the switch where you want and be able to disconnect it easily when a panel needs to come off.

I'm using an LED at the switch which flashes when the Sim is on as a visual reminder.

Most of the trim panels just pop off. Protect anything that might get scratched with tape and towels.

!!!! Eject any discs before removing the head unit. It will cycle the stack as soon as it is reconnected and may jam if not level !!!!

Remove these 4 bolts and the head unit will pop out with a firm pull.

Hook-up requires two wires to be tapped for + and - 12v.
Plug G21 pin 11 Gray provides 12+
Plug G21 pin 22 Brown provides 12- (elec. ground)

The VSS input wire is cut, Plug G18 pin 3 light blue. The original input goes to the board, the board will send back either the original signal or the simulated signal depending on the switch position.

The LED should have been placed lower between the Aux and Acc. It can't easily be seen during the day where I put it.

My G-d...Deep Palancar...Who are you?!! You have magnificent powers! I hope you realize that most of us regular people are in awe of your post and would be scared to venture along this path on our own, despite the frustrating Nav lockout. If you were local (NY area) I might even pay someone like you to do this.
 
This is really good, exactly what I was looking for. The next step is to hack the NAV so we can play DVD movies on the screen!

Didn't someone say that you can play DVD movies on the navigation screen?

I have that ability on my Eclipse 6620 navigation screen and I love it! It's great if you're waiting to pick someone up at the mall, for example. Or stuck on the parkway in traffic.
 
Palancar, you have a large brain. But wouldn't it be easier to just pull over, stop and add the destination? My brain hurts just looking at those pics.

I can't remember if my buddy had the same Eclipse NAV as I do, but what's important is this: His Dealer installed Eclipse which I remember being the same as mine, was unlocked from the start. He was just as surprised as I was. I don't know if it was the tech that just decided to go above and beyond to program, install something, or whatever but it was sweet. Going on road trips and being able to (as the passenger) hit up the nearest Hooters made life that much better.

I know there's a Contra code out there where you go into the menu and hit the top and bottom corners and it brings up the programming menu to unlock that feature but you have to do that every time you start up the 4runner. His, you don't have to do that.

I've tried this on my AVN62D and it doesn't work. I can't bring up the menu and I've followed all of those YOUTUBE videos, read a lot of threads and postings, it just doesn't work for me.
 
I believe most Eclipse units are like mine...you simply ground the parking brake wire and then they are fully unlocked forever.
 
Yeah, I did the whole installation myself. Instead of connecting the parking brake sensor wire, I just ran it to a good chassis ground. Now everything works all the time....nothing is locked out.
 
Wait! Signal check mode? Is this a diagnostic mode for the nav unit? I must know how to enter that mode!
 
So my question is.... what happens if you simply momentarily interrupt the VSS input with a SPST switch???

Good question. The system recognizes that the GPS is sensing movement while the VSS is showing no movement and locks the system back out. For some reason, if you VSS simulate approx. 3mph the system unlocks regardless of the GPS speed.
