Wandering on windy days especially on hwy

I read this string of posts regarding 4runner wandering on windy hwy roads:

My 4runner has the same problem even though it's been aligned not too long ago.

I have a few questions and correct me if I'm wrong.
1. Even if your alignment is within spec, it may still need adjustment to correct the wandering.
2. From what i gather from the link above, set it toe-in a little more to get more stability.


Please help. The wandering is driving me nuts. It's not that bad on a good clear day, but when windy, it's not fun to drive.

The fix for the 4Runner and any car is to dial in additional tow-in. If you can imagine a straight line drawn from each front wheel in the path that the individual wheels are going, when toed in the lines that the front wheel paths would draw intersect each other. The individual tires would then "push" off of each other equally, self-centering the steering as well as the direction of the car.

That makes sense. Toe-in would channel the force of the two wheels inward and centering the car. I guess, in theory, two front wheels that are

Toe-In would also cause some excessive wear on your tires and perhaps a negative affect on VSC performance too.
The 4Runners just have crappy wind loading from the sides.

Additional poitive caster will help a bit too.

Did the alignment shop check all the tie rod ends and such? Alignment can be in spec and still have to much play in the tie rods or ball joints causing it to wander on the road.
Correct me if I"m wrong, but messing w/ the toe in may help w/ stability, but won't it wear tires faster??
