Want to keep stock bumper, but add recovery points/shackles to the front...

I mean what's the point of recovery points if you lack the ability to self recover? you going to pull really hard with your man muscles? you strong like bull?

Your thinking seems kinda narrow-minded but they could obviously be used if you were with a mate and in need of recovery ...

Uh okay, you should have the ability to recover yourself for those situations where you don't have a mate. But hey, if you just want the look of being "self sufficient" I guess whatever floats your boat.

If the guy is saying he's cool spending 500+ dollars on these ARB recovery points I don't get why he wouldn't want to get a hidden winch and add a winch later on.

Exactly.. if you don't adventure solo...

A self recovery winch is an extremely valuable tool.... but you can almost always recover in a different way when you have another vehicle along.

Also, there are many scenarios where a winch will not work (especially without another vehicle around).

... or a tree, or a huge are protrusion of rock, or spending two and a half hours digging a hole in the sand to bury you spare tire in, or having 5 feet short of what you need to the first two :D

Brother, I don't disagree with you but I'm just saying that to act like there's no need for recovery points without the ability to self-recover is a little narrow-minded. I know some of the groups I run with around here won't allow you to go unless you have recovery points that could be used to get you out of a spot.

And you don't get my point that a hidden winch gives you the recovery points and a platform to add a winch later on. These ARB points only give you recovery points. Value wise the hidden winch platform is a better deal because if you can have points and and then later a winch that's better than points and then to have to purchase a way to mount a winch. I never said recovery points don't matter but it's ignoring an upgrade path for the sake of not really gaining much for the money.

I want to hear more of this story. Link ?

I don't think I'll go as far as spending $500+ on the ARB recovery points. To clarify and settle all the comments, I still want to keep the stock bumper, but have accessible recovery points from the FRONT, not underneath using the towhooks or towing eyelets. I do like the look of the front recovery points with shackles, and again - I do not intend to add a winch nor take it on any extreme off-roading trips. The recovery points are just for mild off-roading and helping people get out from ditches in snowstorms.

EVERYONE CALM DOWN!

It's more the need to help others. It's not being "self sufficient", because in that case - I would be ordering a winch, but again - since I will not be doing any extreme off roading which would warrant a winch, I would like recovery points to help out others If needed. And If i were to get stuck, I hope that I would be with someone else that could pull me out.. but only having a recovery point on the rear is less optimal than having it in the front when my rear points cannot be accessed.

I looked into the hidden winch mount specialists bumper... then I realized that it's out of my budget, and I don't even want to be tempted with adding a winch to it since that was not apart of my original plan... If I could find a front bumper just like that, plain and simple, heavy duty, with two recovery points - that would be just right for what I want/need.

LawnDart already mentioned your best option, call and verify but I bet you can use the UHWM hidden winch setup without even cutting a slot in the front bumper for the winch line so the only things you would see are your 2 shackles mounts, sounds like exactly what you are looking for.

No one else makes anything cheaper so unless you are friends with a good welder or are one yourself you wont save much if any money by trying to have something custom made.

As has been said, the front recovery/tie downs are fine for most folks and situations but it could be harder to do recoveries/ be recovered without damaging the front bumper skin which is why I assume you want more front mounted shackles. One comment on that, if you are pulling people out of ditches etc.....just turn the truck around and use a rear receiver adapter

If you don't like that option, well might be out of luck and have to live with the stock points. I almost went with a hidden winch mount but saw move value in a slim hybrid bumper for just a few more dollars ......and its a spot to add more lights :)

This. Thank you. I may contact HWMS and see what they can offer without the winch slot.

No that's not what he's saying. He's saying on install you just don't cut a slot in your bumper for the fair lead. That way you could always cut it later on if you want to add a winch.

I wouldn't ask them not to build the winch mount without the actual winch fairlead.

Just so you know...(most noobs here don't get it) Putting on a hidden winch mount defeats the factory safety rating of the truck. You are replacing the factory engineered bumper crumple zone with solid steel plating.... Also, your chances of bending the frame and totaling the vehicle in a small accident go way up.

It's a big compromise and I can't imagine why anyone would go that far unless they planned for some extreme off-roading. And if that is your goal.. might as well do a real bumper and gain some clearance and durability with the option to go back to stock later if you desired... at least do one of those nice hybrids that are now offered for the 2014+.

If the goal is to recover others. The front is not a good choice without a winch. Good chance of blowing out your diffs if you really need to pull in reverse. Always pull in drive from the rear hitch unless there is simply no other option or it is very light work....

Many posts on this site seem to follow the same pattern. People want a way to have their cake and eat it too. It's simply not possible. Pick your priorities and do it right. There are very few changes you can make to the truck that are all pros and no cons.

In general, you shouldn't recover someone in reverse. I can see why you would want recovery points for YOU to get pulled out but not to recover someone else. If you can, always be the recover vehicle DRIVING, not reversing.

Ring and pinions are designed to have the load moving forward. They are spiral cut and if you put a ton of pressure on them in reverse, the gears "push" away from each other in the case.

If you can, always recover someone while moving forward.

none of the HWMS photos show protruding recovery points. i know i have seen them on other hidden winch mounts, but i don't see any on this one

Not in that thread, but there are some. Google search revealed this, posted on the forum.

yeah definitely don't pull someone out in reverse

i don't have a winch so i'm not an expert on them, but even in a winch recovery if its a lot of force aren't you even supposed to put the transmission in neutral and only use the brakes?

Thanks for the tips. Def. a noob at this stuff. I contacted HWMS about the bumper. It would mostly benefit me getting rescued at this point!

So listen to the experience here.. If you need to be rescued... the factory hooks do just fine.

Yea, if you are sunk to the frame in mud... it gets messy, but honestly, the lower the point... the better. in most cases. It helps angle the pull up and out. There are situations where a higher one is better.

People get caught up by what they see... It's mostly hype and marketing...
