14s+ don't have an RSCA button

I didn't know that the 14's no longer have this button.

They really change the buttons and around a lot, I figured this might be pretty 2014 specific in some places. I dont have an RSCA button. What is it?

It's a button we can push to turn off the Roll/rear side curtain air bags. So if you happen to get into a pretty good tilt without rolling it over,the air bags won't deploy while offroading.

Looks like a fun time, done Cleghorn & Pilot Rock many times. Looks like you guys had a pretty large turn out. Also a nice little adventure Sunday, I drove home down Hwy 18 during those down pours. Was up there last weekend too, bummer we didn't run into one another. We finished Dishpan and passed Crab Flats camp ground around 12:30 on Sat. Camped near Holcomb Pinnacles.

Once you get that rear locker you will find you will not use or need A-trac as much anymore, sounds like it does a good job by itself though!:cheers:

Skids are all painted and ready for mounting. Yes... I painted the forward one the color of the truck!

Ha I totally plan to do some color on my skids. Most likely orange. They're on next years mod list. Lift wheels tires happened this past couple weeks.

On a different note (and why I was originally writing), I am definitely digging your rear bumper. Not sure if I'm willing to cut up my truck yet. But if someone rear ends it and jacks it up or I rip it off on the trail I'm def going this route. Only question, did you remove the factory hitch receiver and bumper serves as it's replacement? I tow my almost 5000lb RV I live in for parts of the year so if I can take it out and replace it with a GX 460 hitch and still get the bumper that's going to be my ideal set up. Thanks man.

The bumper does have a new hitch built in which required removing the factory one. Not sure what the load rating on it is. At 5000 lbs I'm assuming it probably needs to be beefier. Since the bumper uses he original hitch mounting holes as well as the other free mounting holes in the frame for mounting, it may be especially difficult to get a bumper like this AND a separate hitch heavy duty receiver to work together.

Maybe the bumper receiver is strong enough or can be reinforced more though, but you'd have to talk to CBI or other bumper vendors about it.

Skids installed!

Pretty easy overall. Used a floor jack with a towel on it to lift the plates in place for a nice one man job.

I hate to say that I didn't really do much research into the skids as I had on other things

I had the opportunity to get 10% off and a lot of people seemed to have them and I didn't read anything bad about them so I went for it They are not aluminum. That would be nice but the cost, plus they seem to bend pretty easy.... Used to have an aluminum skid on an old Baja bug that worked fine but that thing was so light. These trucks are heavy!

For the color, I found a Valspar Ruby Red I think it was that was pretty close. to the body paint. At least close enough for separate parts, wouldn't try to use it as touchup paint It's not great paint, the overspray stays sticky for a long time and the paint takes over a week to fully dry

12th Annual Ultimate Yota Jamboree at Pismo Beach

I hear about this event 3 days before it was to happen, too soon to get Friday off to leisurely drive up. So instead I got up at 3am to drive the 4.5-5 hours to the location to be there by the 8-8:30 drivers meeting.

Got to the dunes and found the group without much trouble (Other than staying awake on the freeway!) No traffic at all of course. Nice!

Hung out for a while with the guys in the Green Camp who, judging by the giant pile of empty cans and bottles next to the fire pit had had quite the time last night They reminded me of when I used to go to the desert when I was younger with friends, seemed like a nice bunch

Then drove around the dunes for a while. (No action shots darn it!)



Dunes are scary! Worse than normal dirt/rock obstacles. The dunes break steeply, randomly and it's VERY hard to see! Chance of rolling /very high/ if your not careful. Something that unfortunately happened to one of the group the night before

For myself, I had too much speed going down the face of a steep dune and there was a whoop at the bottom that I slammed into at a steep angle. Tires initially dug into it, suspension bottomed out and because of the steep angle the bumper also face planted into the sand at least up to the yota logo!

This popped some of the bumper plastic pieces out of their clips and some other small damage, but one larger and more concerning thing I wrote a post about here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/maint...-body-repair-specilists-here.html#post1800002

Damage not too bad but a little worrying...

We came back for lunch, then I tried to nap a bit after getting up so early. Was warm now that the sun had come out but with a cool breeze. Had a nice rest in my reclining beach chair but no sleep.

I got up, driver over to the porta potties and then did a little more duning by myself.

At this point I was kind of over the dunes, they really aren't that much fun in such a heavy vehicle. I've ridden them with quads and dirt bikes and that's a lot of fun, but I was starting to think I might be pushing my luck, especially when I have a week long trip to Moab in just another 2 days.

So I decided to trek back home instead of staying the night so I can get an early start on fixing the damage on Sunday.

That decision made for an extremely frustrating drive home through traffic on the 101 and for miles and miles on the 210 and THEN... on 15 south the freeway stopped completely dead. Like turn off your car and get out dead. After inching along once every 5 minutes or so, it became clear that the entire 4 lanes were now being shunted off onto surface streets. With a light at the bottom of the offramp of course, and "Oh!", a 4 car accident in the intersection there as well! So every 60 seconds, 6-8 cars would go get off the freeway. :frusty:

I was only about 1/2 mile from the exit, but the freeway was closed for 12hours, the cause? "Fatal Shooting Reportedly Involving Rival Motorcycle Gangs Shuts Down 15 Freeway in Corona Area"

How delightful! Such an awesome world we live in. And I gotta say I'm actually kind of bummed about the dune damage as well

Oh well, not all adventures can be gems I guess! Gotta shrug it off and look forward to Moab.

It was nice meeting you. I agree with your assessment of the dunes. I got myself in a 100% Pucker position yesterday... Was about 4/5th up a steep dune.. didnt make it. Had to back down with out sliding into the steep bowl to the right of me... I just kept thinking about the guy who rolled Friday night.. LOL. Made it down with out incident.

The event: off schedule.. low turn out.. not well planned(IMHO). It was mostly a party camp trip for some of the people there.. I was absolutely surprised at the rigs that were there.. with the amount invested in mods, that sat the whole day at the camping area.. Huh... More stock vehicles out having fun.. LOL

I drug a Range Rover out of the camping area.. and a Chevy Silverado stuck to his axle... i felt bad for the guy, he had his GF in the truck, as a little 4Runner drug him off to safety.

I saw someone in a tiny, low, racer like vehicle stuck to the body (Which was like all of 2 inches or something). Two people were trying to help him out, though they weren't hooked up to him. Those kinds of cars can be super hard to tow as there is nothing to hook up to. But it was plain CRAZY that he was out there at all O.O

Was nice talking to you too. Hey you wouldn't want to come down to San Diego so I can look at your front end and take measurements and such to try and figure out where my front end is bent would you? Heh, JK. Hopefully I can find one of the SD group at the next So Cal meet

Just want to be clear that I didn't have any problem with the event or anyone there, just the opposite! Everyone was awesome, Lance was friendly and helpful as was everyone else I met.

Moab 2014-09-23

Went to Moab end of sept 2014 with an old Highschool friend of mine. He'd never been before. I mostly played it easy, though wend on a few Moderate trails, though had to turn back on one, seemed a tad dicey to do alone

Escondido to Moab: 11.75 Hours. 784 miles, 18.1 m,pg (-1.0 mpg over may trip)
In Moab: ~22 hours, 453 miles, 16.6 mpg
Moab to Escondido: 12.5 Hours, 773 miles, 16.9 mpg

Weather on the way out and the three days we were there was awesome. 80 during the day with a light breeze usually and 60 at night.

The trip home was anything but. Light rain and dramatic clouds at first, started raining 10 minutes after packing and hitting the road (Whew!) but then nearing Beaver UT, 90 minutes of insane downpour and lightning. No hail luckily!

Then it cleared at the AZ border, 50 miles or so later though, the store had undercut the 15 freeway and sinkholed the shoulder and undercut who knows how much of the right lane which was closed. Lonk wait to get through there.

Then came about 150 miles of 30-40 MPH gusty desert headwind. 4rth gear, 3K rpm to maintain 70 got me a cool 12.5 mpg for that section.

On a good trip it's an 11 hour drive, this took 12.5 hours. The weather only got worse from there from what I read, including big hail storms so we really got out at a decent time after all.

Cave Home! (And Cave Storage Area)


Went inside. Was pretty creepy with the stained mattresses on the floor and the 10,000 rat pellets around. Many of the other cave homes in the area are actually owned and used for various things.


Colorado from the cliffs on the lower part of the Shafer trail. Under Dead Horse Point.


Colorado up close on the Hey Joe mine trail. We did not complete this trail as it was getting too late.

Hmm, from inside it looked like I was looking straight down to the ground over the hood! This was on the 4x4 trail in arches between the Devils Garden and Tower Arch. Was a fun easyish moderate trail!
