interesting options, though I wear an older series 1 apple watch going on two years without issues and never wore a watch before this latest smart watch trend came about. The clock on the wall tells me the time just as a cell phone or other time keeping device hell the computer screen i work on has the time in the bottom right corner. Having weather info, voice command timers and stopwatches, voice command scheduling, alerts for emails; meeting times; text messages instantly available without me having to pick up a phone or switch applications on my computer are very welcomed in my book. top it off with health monitoring and its even helpful. I haven't had issues wearing it around a shop either seems to take a decent beating. Thought the list is in this article was pretty interesting though.

I've just worn a fitbit the last few years. Recently I got a new battery put in the simple, Swiss Army Watch that was a gift from my wife ages ago. I like it. Not to big or heavy.

Bought a new omega seamaster in 1990 for $1K, sold it 18 years later for $800 on ebay. It had gone diving with me all over the world, and def. showed some wear. Seemed like a great investment to me. Just like the one in the pix except it had gold on the band too..

Now I have a nice Seiko that I wouldn't trade for anything.

I have a Grand Seiko spring drive my wife got me as a wedding present. Literally cried because I've spoken about that watch for at least 10 years. Thats going to be my keep it forever watch.

Define watchmaker. A person who makes watches. Apple Watch does everything a Timex, Rolex, etc. does, right? Is Timex not a watch?

So, for you, a watchmaker is some old fart on an old wooden bench with tweezers and small screw driver putting together a mechanical watch? If so, then you pretty much eliminated 99% of watches out there.

The difference is that Apple Watch is a watch and much more. And this is why it has now become the most dominant watch on the planet.

As for relevance, i would bet that many Swiss CEOs are shitting in their pants right now. Remember what Johnny Ive said about Apple Watch when it came out? “Switzerland is in deep shit,” rumored what Ive said 3 years ago.

what is irrelevant is the definition of a watch. how about this, Apple (apparently I haven't vetted the claim) has sold more wrist bound units than the entire Swiss watch industry has sold of their wrist bound units. which means a rather significant number of potential customers who could have placed a Swiss time piece on their wrist chose instead to place an apple wrist pad on it. it means revenue and dollars lost. Which is totally relevant, some might say it's the ONLY thing that's relevant. all this said I'll keep my Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean thank you very much, I don't own a single apple product though so ya know.

Well, most of Swiss are sold much cheaper than that. Swiss also includes the cheaper brands (e.g. Swatch). ASP (avg selling price) of Apple Watch is around $400 i think which is smack in the middle of Swiss heart.

Well, if you’re able to read the iPhone, then you should be able to read the Watch. And if you can read time on a Rolex, then you can read time on Apple Watch (which has many faces to choose from). As for buttons, you don’t interact with it much except for a few swipes or touch LARGE buttons on screen.

In fact, my father loves his Apple Watch and he’s in his early 80’s. His Rolex is now in drawer like mine. He likes it because he has atrial fibrillation (heart arrhythmia)...and Apple Watch helps him watch his heart rate in real time.

Yeah I have zero interest in an Apple watch. the reality is watches like mine and yours are 100% jewelry in 2018 we can't really suggest anything else. I have two cell phones (one personal one work) they both tell time, I have a computer that tells time, my car tells time, bottom line I don't need to wear an $8,000.00 time piece to know what time it is. I do it because 1 my wife gave it to me as a wedding gift and 2 fashion. I am analog, not digital.

All of that said Apple is a disruptor just like Amazon and their sales numbers cannot be ignored the price point matters and it doesn't. it indicates where consumer dollars are being spent. I agree a $400.00 watch is more attainable for more people but there are plenty of $400.00 watches that are now being overlooked for a wrist calculator. It's a significant milestone. I'll close the same way I did before. I'll keep my Omega thank you very much.

Just FYI, between my wife and I, we currently have two Rolexes...one Platy Yachtmaster and one Turn-o-graph. My brother has two...one GMT Master and one Sea-Dweller. His wife has one those small Rolex with mother-of-pearl and diamond indices. My father has one...Rolex Datejust two-tone.

ALL of the above are either in closet or in safe collecting dust. We all have Apple Watches...of the 1st generation from almost 3 years ago.

Personally, i have tried to wear my Turn-o-graph a few times...but after a few hours, i went back to my Apple Watch because i MISS it...i miss the quick glances, i miss the health monitoring, and i miss it when i exercise. I am waiting on Apple Watch to be able to measure blood sugar levels...and once that is out, i will be first in line to get one!

We may be one family...but i am sure that we’re not the only ones that have given up on Swiss for Apple Watch.

That is disruptive. Three families that used to wear Swiss, now all Apple Watches.

I have some high end watches that I don't particularly care for or wear anymore (rolex and omega).

I tend to collect seiko automatics and gshocks. However, i tend to wear the 3 watches below:

1. My favorite EDC watch of all time: titanium protek. The titanium bracelet is light and comfortable, and has a big giant face. Its travelled with me all around the world. I paid full price when it came out, and since its been on the market for a long time, the price has dropped dramatically. I've since retired it for two other watches below.

2. My current day off watch: Casio rangeman. This is a monster, Basically, this is their current top of the line. I wanted a watch that can outlive my protek but with GPS tracking, etc. The cons are that it is insanely hard to find (toyota edition) and I hate the resin bracelet (will replace w/ ss or ti when it becomes available in aftermarket). Also, its huge. You cannot hide this watch on your wrist.

Did I mention that it comes in a toyota racing edition.

3. My current work watch/business casual: Casio steel square. I love this watch because it looks like a 40 dollar watch on the outside, but it has almost every option G shock has to offer (uncluding gps tracking). It also has an insanely high build quality for a g shock (SS solid links and SS solid caseback). I bought it because I wanted a g shock that can fit under my dress shirt's cuffs, and be blingy enough to wear in a business setting (rubber watches are still frowned upon in business settings). Downside, people will think you are a poor loser, and that is exactly why I wear it to thumb my nose at my elitist coworkers.
