Water Pump @ 90k of NOT!

Long story short, im calling around to the dealership shops to see how much it'll cost for the 90k service + timing belt replacement (apparently those are 2 different items...i was under the impression that the 90k service WAS the timing belt replacement itself!).

Ive gotten mixed opinions from different shop managers. One imparticular recommended AGAINST replacing the water pump unless its squeeking and showing signs it DEF. needs to be replacing. Other shop managers were indifferent, saying the new pump might bust after 20-40k while the old one cold go forever!

What do you guy think? Should i DEFINATLY replace it? I prefer to make the investment not and avoid problems down the road.

You ALWAYS replace the water pump when you're doing a timing belt! You're already there... labor wise is a near-wash... and if the pump goes (which it most probably will) after the timing belt change, you've got to go back in there again.

Save yourself money, hassle, time, frustration and a potential stranding... do the pump when you do the belt.

Replace it but only use a oem Toyota pump. Do not waste your money on a Chinese made water pump.

Replaced my timing belt at 105,000. Water pump looked great so did not pull. Belt looked brand new too!

I'll do another belt at 160,000 and do the pump then. Im at 140,000 now.

I didn't do my TB change til 138k miles and after inspection everything still looked neat and tidy but figured that was enough on the water pump also and did it then but like stated before use OEM.

Replaced both of mine at 100K miles. The belt looked brand new, but the water pump was starting to leak, so it was time. Good call on just getting it done.

OK,...someone clear this up for me:

Been calling around to the Toyota Dealerships for quotes ok a 90k service, and one of the service managers was trying to tell me that the 90k service and the timing belt service are 2 different services!

I went on the Toyota Owner's site and the 90k interval clearly states the timing belt is included in the service.

Is this guy just trying to milk my wallet?

Timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump assembly, coolant flush, and thermostat cost me $775 ($808 including tax). My dealership gave me a pretty significant discount, but I had some dealerships quoting me at $1,200 for the same service. I also had an independent Toyota/Lexus shop quote me at $662 plus tax.

Do your shopping, and wait until a dealer has a special on the timing belt replacement. A few months ago one of my local dealers had the timing belt replacement for $350. Most dealerships quoted me at $550 for the timing belt, and two gave me a coupon for $450.

As you can see, prices are all over the map so pit the dealers against each other for the best price.

Also, my belt and water pump looked brand new after 6.5 years / 97,000 miles.

I did pit the dealerships against each other, so to speak.

There's one in town that i trust 100%, the others ive had oil changes at and theyve screwed that up (thank goodness it wasnt too badly...just forgot to put in one of the bolts to the skid plate due to them stripping the hole..i just tapped out the next size up and put in a new bolt)...but i'll never go back to that dealership if i dont have to.

The others are offering the 90k service with the timing belt replacement starting at $2175 (thats with new water pump, tensioners, serp. belt, t-stat, gaskets, etc) but i called around and got it down to around $1300 for all of it.

Bottom line is i trust this crew, but i think ive done my due dilligence.

What seals need to be replaced? Crankshaft?

OMG!!! Over two grand to get your TB changed??? They are ripping you a new one! And not using any lube! Even at $1300 you can do waaaay better.

When I had mine done, I had a VERY reputable shop do it, and didn't look back. I bought my OEM parts online (1st Toyota I think) and gave them to the shop to install. I think it cost me around $575 for TB, wp, & a pulley or two, plus I was foolish enough to believe Toyo LL coolant was actually different / better than other extended life coolants, and bought two jugs of that.
I'm sorry, but the dealership mechs AREN'T the only one's who know how to work on Toyotas. If you are one of these guys that will only give the STEALERSHIP your money - then by all means - go for the $2k deal. Might as well throw ALL your money away. j/k

Definitely do your research. Now that I've moved to the North TX area, I wouldn't trust any of the dealerships in the area to air up my tires.
Even if I had a coupon for cheap service, I would have to wonder if they actually even DID the service I paid for, or were just charging me for it (I've heard nothing but bad things about these Stealerships in particular).
