Weird noise when stability control engages

Hi All
When I drive in 2wd-hi and the back end slips causing the stability control to kick in, I hear a rattling noise from the rear undercarriage. Do you happen to know what it might be? The truck is 3 months old.

Maybe ask the dealer if the pumps for the stability control are supposed to make noise. Just a guess on my part as not familiar with the system and don't even know if it's run by hydraulic pumps.

I get the beep from the alarm and hear thumping as the abs does it's thing for traction control. I get other sounds when there is something loose in back, like a toolbox or when my maglight gets loose.

That's normal. It's your brake being activated/unactivated at a high rate. Basically pulsing your brakes.

Yep, that's how it works on mine anyway. I was up around Stanley Lake ID a couple of weeks ago, nice 2-3 inch an hour snow storm. Anyway it was the first winter driving I got to do in this generation t4r. Of course I wanted to have some fun err... learn the abilities of the new traction system and found it difficult to get the back end to break out. That is when I noticed the sound you describe. You can turn the traction control off on the TE traction panel above the mirror, and proceed to go fishing :fishing:

My guess as well.. [MENTION=99954]Rafal[/MENTION] does the "rattling" sound kind of like when ABS engages on a rainy/snowy day? Toyota's traction control system pretty much does just that, it pulses your brakes at which ever corner it thinks needs to be slowed down.

I think it may sound similar but will have to check. Off the top of my head, the abs sounds a little quieter and comes mainly from the front. It makes sense I suppose.

Try stopping on a Hill, and leave it in drive, with your foot on the break. Lift off the brake and let your 4runner roll back a few feet. The "Hill Hold" feature should kick in (doesn't work very well as you will still roll back). The sound the Hill Hold feature makes is the same sound your Traction Control/ABS normally makes.

If this is the sound you heard, then it is normal.
