I tried that. No footage from that day was available (so they said), and I couldn't remember where I had parked anyway. Sad thing is that I always park away from the main herd anyway. I think this must've been done by a trailer or something, as the paint is weird. I'm thinking someone was trying to do a pull-through parking job and clipped my 4R....then just left. I wasn't even there that long, but it looks like at least a grand to me. The scratches are quite deep, and that fender flare will need to be replaced.

I second the motion to keep positive and go bumper shopping 
One of the functions of the dashcam that I've recently installed is to take a video when it senses an impact. It has a 140 degree field of view, and it's 1920x1080 resolution.
It would have definitely caught that prick's license plate. I'm positive these things will be in every vehicle soon enough. Sorry, I know it doesn't improve your situation.

That's why I park in the middle of nowhere in parking lots or at least an end spot (over the line).
I NEVER park beside people unless I absolutely have to, and your incident is exactly why. Take the extra 15 seconds and park at the end of the lot. You get a few extra steps for exercise too.

people just weird sometimes, in most states hit and run is felony offence.
Say you`d have Security video from Home depot, then what? most likely it would be not good enough to read plates. Say you can read plates, now you`d have to prove to the court who was driving that vehicle. registration/ownership doesn`t mean much.
There is a reason we pay insurance. Once you realise that most people suck you`d not be upset about human behavior anymore.

I have one with 2300x1920 resolution and 160 degree FOV i highly doubt it would catch lisence plate if mounted on windshield.
I agree they should be in every vehicle leaving assembly line. cheap and efficient way to keep honest people honest.

Actually I believe you would get cited with either that or leaving the scene of an accident.
Well in Alberta Canada anyways, people that hit and run doesn't go to jail. They should.

Just wanted to touch on this for my fellow Californians. Vehicle Code 20002(a) states that any driver involved in a vehicle accident with property damage shall stop their vehicle and identify themselves to the affected parties as the driver of the suspect vehicle, or, leave in a conspicuous area on the affected property suffering damage a legible note with pertinent insurance and contact information.
^This is a misdemeanor charge and thus, in the case of a misdemeanor not committed in the presence of a peace officer, I cannot legally place someone under arrest for this unless committed in my presence. The affected party, however, if witnessed, can place the suspected parties under citizen's arrest. Sort of a tricky area but not as uncommon as you'd think. Store owners do this frequently for petty theft and other misdemeanor charges.

Oh and for clarification, VC 20001 is the felony section of a Hit and Run. The main difference that makes it a felony is injuries to the victim party.

What cameras are you both using? Links? I was looking to get one installed as well. Good to have and I like the "sense impact" function you mentioned.

got mine on amazon about 2 years ago, all I remember that it use ambarella chip and that somehow important. I`d probably buy different model now, a lot has been improved during 2 years period.
I`ve heard that GOPro now can be set as dashcam.
for now I`d try this one for 90 bucks.

Also a motion activated function that a bear triggered the other night (october is bad for bears here)!
I use the papago gosafe200. purchased from costco online. hardwired and attached to the back of my rearview mirror. I used heavy duty velcro, but it comes with a clumsy mount.
A little screen slides down. Slick.

Reflecting on what Victor said, I looked at some footage, while I can see the licence plates a foot or so forward of the a pillars, they aren't legible. But he made a good point about the license plate being practically useless anyway.
In a collision these would be valuable. And for everything else---in the pasty week I've seen a bear, moose, coyote, a car on its roof, a van going backwards on a roundabout, probably 20 people running a red light at an intersection, and a cop car zig zagging all over the place while the driver was texting.
It's an interesting record, regardless of it's usefulness for prosecution at a hit and run (which it certainly wouldn't hurt)

Youtube compression degrade video quality but not by much, in videos I posted when you watch them full screen you can switch resolution to 1080 and that`s it. 4K not supported yet.
i`d love to have a dashcam without screen, it`s useless anyway other then setup. setup at home, plug in the car and forget about it until something happened.
