want to weld my spider gears to make lockers. is there a down side to doing this?

The heat from welding can weaken the metal. You drag a tire whenever you turn, (they wear out faster). When the weld breaks it gets noisy (and if you're unlucky like me, becomes undrivable.) All that said, I ran welded till they broke (3 heavy footed trips through Moab, over a year). Then replaced with a spool as soon as could. Lowrange sells them for about $150, and the full spools are tougher then the welds will ever be.

agreed with awz...the only time I could see or justify welding a spider set would be to get you out of the woods and home. When it breaks (and it will) think of where you'll be when it does...deep in mud, 100 miles from home, and usually where no wrecker can get to you. Invest in a good locker (air or otherwise)...spools are hard as hell on stock axles, especially on pavement, which means more money spent when the axles sheer off...call ARB or someone reputable, and save yourself the heartache, not to mention the money.

Nothing says cool like a spool. Welding is NOT the same as a locker. Lockers allow for 25% ( I think) slippage in turn, while a spool (or welding) is no slip ever.
Welding is cheap. Unless your running some heavy 37s or something, your shafts n' stuff will be fine. East coast wheeling, is not the same as west coast stuff, we can get away with more over here. You can make it stronger by welding a plate over you gears for more weld contact. I have friends that have been running welded rears (and some fronts) for YEARs with no breakage. They are great for trail riding, however, would not recommend for daily driving due to increased tire wear, and easy spin out on icy roads.
I have a spool in the rear of my 92. I would have just welded it but the v6 carriers are tricky to weld, so I spooled it. I went with a durasolid. It had good reviews on pirate, and I love it. Ive had it for about 2 years now. I think I paid 79 bucks plus shipping, but it looks like the price went up a bit.

My v6 3rd with durasolid.
