Went with the GX 460 over the TP.......

I really like the V8, and KDSS truly does make a difference in terms of on road manners. I also appreciate the technology and easy user interface, which also exists in the 4runner, but just with a few more bells and whistles.
I HATE the barn door and the stock wheels/tires, which have NO presence.
Looks wise, I would have much rather have had a TP, but what I wanted doesn't exist in a 4unner (KDSS and full time 4WD with a V8).

Having said that, I'm now thinking about getting rid of the stock tires to make it look better and posted this on the GX forum, but haven't gotten any feedback yet. I was hoping some of y'all might be have some feedback.

Need advice on the BFG All terrain T/A KO2 for my 2016 GX 460.


After researching tires on tire rack, I found that the BFG AT T/A KO2's were the top rated tires in their class with good ride comfort, wet /dry traction, and handling characteristics.

I'm looking at going to a 275/65/18 (32.1") from 265/60/18 (30.3")
One of the my questions is whether anyone knows I can have these installed on the GX WITHOUT mods (wheel spacers or a lift). The guys at the tire place seem to think I can pull it off, but then again they're also trying to sell me some tires and I'm not sure they really know.......

Any issues with 275's such as rubbing (or other issues I need to be aware of), given that there will be about a 2" increase in wheel diameter?

Besides their AT capability, I love the presence I think these tires will have in the wheel well, even with the existing stock wheels.

I've thought about changing out the stock wheels as well, but am concerned about the warranty issues associated with this, and not sure I want to spring for them. Plus I'm not sure I want to go down to 17" where there are more tire options admittedly, or up to 20" rims, which will probably roughen the ride even further with these tires. So I'm thinking stick with the factory 18's.

I can't comment on rubbing for the GX460 (sure wish I could!), but the tire fitment guide in the stickies says it should fit on the 4r. It's definitely not a 2" diameter increase over your stock size. It's actually closer to 5/8"

This is my second set of KO2s. I love them. I've been a tire nerd for most of my life, and turned my nose up at the BFGs for years. But the compromise of onroad manners vs. offroad ability is very impressive. They are extremely quiet on road for an AT tire. They handle snow and water very well. Price and treadwear are also both positive points for these tires. As is availability.

Make sure to check places other than just TireRack.com. TireRack is great, but they carry only a few brands. Check out Discount Tire Direct, Tread Depot, etc etc.... you'll get a wider selection and possibly better pricing...just a thought

Thanks for reporting back - I've been to look at the GX twice, and just cannot get past that stupid door. Trade-offs I guess. I may go again, but I do not want an expensive car that pisses me off every time I get into the back. I traded my wife's 2 YO CRV when they changed the door for a liftgate.

I use Discount Tire and I have swapped out my original purchase due to fitment issues twice now, they don't hesitate to do it and it gives me confidence in making the purchase. Of course, I try to get it right the first time but knowing they have my back if I end up wrong is huge to me.

My dad has a '16 GX (that V8 :nod. We swapped the stockers after 2k miles for a set of Cooper AT3's 275/65R18 and they fit just fine. Check out this page from the Lexus forum. 10 pages of LT tires and questions...

yeah, I was being a bit lazy about the search. I did a quick scan through on the GX forum and didn't find what I was looking for but didn't do a more comprehensive search.

My gas mileage is utter shite. I came from a bmw x6, which got terrible city mileage (worse than the GX) but definitely better highway mpg than the gx.

I'm sure exactly (b/c I've been afraid to look) but I KNOW it's not 15 mpg city.

thanks for the feedback rob. Yeah, these BFG's seem to be a big step up for their brand from what I've read. I've only recently gotten into tires a bit -- the reviews on the KO2's are phenomenal as an 'all around' AT tire.

I really do like the idea of turbo + smaller displacement for the Toyota SUVs; however, I seriously doubt that the 2.7L Ford motor in the GX460 would get much better mileage than the V8 does. Toyota/Lexus has never had the most powerful or highest efficiency powertrains in their trucks/SUVs, but they sure are durable. I'll take that tradeoff any day.

Well. They are putting the motor in the F-150 and if somebody would have told any of us ten years ago that a full size pickup would have a 2.7L motor that got 25 MPG highway AND had some decent power we'd have all laughed.

I will tell you this, I've put more than a few miles on the car thus far and have embarrassed more than a few stoplight wannabe race boys who don't know what that "Sport" and "Eco-Boost" badge on the tailgate mean. ;-)

as soon as I get some manly looking tires, I'm gonna post pics...... it's a black on black GX.

Regarding the air suspension, that only comes in the luxury edition, which I did NOT spring the extra cash for. I got the premium edition because I didn't want the air suspension and now with what I've read on the GX thread, I'm glad I didn't get it. Apparently, there are some serious issues with rub when going up from 265's to 275's for those who have the variable air suspension. Anyway, with the deal I got, it ended up being about $11-12K more than a TEP with KDSS.

So when I was considering cross overs instead of a truck based SUV, I test drove the explorer sport and while I love the front grille and many of the features, it just didn't feel right. Then a funny thing happened-- an edge sport in black caught my eye and my curiosity got the better of me. I took it for a test drive, and I must admit, I was fairly impressed. While I couldn't get myself to seriously consider getting one, I like what ford did with their medium sized cross.
