What about a Daystar 1" front and 1.5" Rear?

Doug,

Like Swamp Rider said, the coils aren't that much taller. Both the front and rear coils are maybe .5" taller. The front almost look identical, but they must have a stiffer compression rate I'm guessing.

The rears have an extra coil in them, and the coils are thicker. There is a good photos somewhere in the threads if you search for "FJ Coil". I think it was titled "the truth about FJ coils", or something like that.

As far as the install, it was no different than pulling out the old ones. Pretty simple. I had it on jack stands, and had my wife stand on the rotor/ axle while I pulled down with one hand, and put the coil in with the other.

I got them used on the FJ forums. If you post a wanted ad, on this site, and on the FJ site, you will find some for cheap. Got the full set of 4 with front bilsteins for 160 shipped. Wish I could have got the rear bilsteins as well!

Doug, pic doesn't show for me, but I'll take a stab at it. The fj coils are only slightly taller than stock, hardly noticeable. The pics I've posted on here where the coil its about 2" taller is comparing fj coils to my current ome 885s.

Ah, thanks A_S_R,
My mistake. So the FJ coils are just stiffer and give you a better ride?
So if I changed to FJ coils, I would put back my same spacer for about the same lift I have now?
Too much data, too little brain lol. :keyboard:
Best regards, Doug

depending on how many miles the used FJ coils have on em, they will net about 1 in. lift up front & .5 out back on top of what your spacers give you now.

Correct, the FJ coils are slightly stiffer than stock. As chaz said, you'll get approx 1" front and .5" rear. The same spacers you have will work with the FJ coils, just a slightly higher stance and improved ride.

Only pic I got of it, but why not with some nature around it :)

1' front spacer so far.

Cool scenery, where is that? Doesn't look like California Rig looks nice too. Snowing here tonight and cold as a frog.

I'll have to take the 4R in the morning :-)

Best regards, Doug

Thanks. It's in Monument valley on the Arizona/Utah border. I took a trip to the southwest over Thanksgiving, it was cold at times but no snow or rain. 4Runner did great.

5100's On Order

Well, I was able to save some mod money to order up the 5100's today. I guess I'll look for some fj coils after the New Year.
If I get bored and decide to throw the shocks on there, do you have to have a new alignment?
Might be a good test to see the effects of the 5100's and then the coils.
I might have to get that lifetime alignment deal from Firestone :-). You guys keep costing me money lol.

Best regards, Doug

Haha, we tend to have that affect on people, myself included! Alignment would be recommended anytime you mess with the front suspension. Firestone lifetime alignment is the way to go it seems.

Thanks ASR,
Maybe I'll throw the rears on when I get them next week. I guess I'll be going to Firestone for the Lifetime alignment :-). I'll have to save another $160 for that now lol. Maybe it's time I hit my son up for a Christmas present. I usually just insist he save his money and get me a card :-).

5100 Rears Installed

Bilstein 5100 Rears installed today. Top bolt was a PITA, ended up putting a large pip wrench around the upper tube. I couldn't hold a small wrench on the flat part of the shaft and get enough torque.

Notes for Newbies:
Put the washer and rubber isolator, 1 ea on the top of threaded rod.
Washer goes cupped towards mount, grommet goes with center ring extended towards mount and aligned with hole in mount plate..
Install the bottom of the shock on the lower stud 1st, finger tighten bolt.
Push down on shock, it will compress and guide it into top mount.
Make sure the rubber grommet seats into the hole.
Work the upper grommet onto shaft, twisting it works good.
Cupped washer and Nylock nut. I tightened upper nut until about 1/4" of threads were showing, bulging the grommet, decently tight by hand.
The Bilstein's have a hex nut you can hold to make sure it doesn't twist as you tighten upper nut.
Tighten lower nut, done.

I took it a test drive. Noticed a slight difference, but not much.

The shocks I took off were slow to respond when pushed down.

I'll get the fronts on next week and see how it feels.

The Dunlop Duratrek AT's are probably not the best tire either. Michelin's next year.

Nice thread and nice 4runner. Ive also got the daystar 1" spacer in front and 1.5" in the rear. Id like to add fj coils to the front to eliminate a little of the rake but doubt I ever will, too much of a PITA with XREAS. Hopefully im finished messing with the suspension until the XREAS dies then it'll be time for a much more substantial lift.

I installed spidertrax wheel spacers today which look great. I hated the look of the recessed wheels. Now I can't wait to ditch the BFG long trails that it came with for some ATs.
