What all to upgrade

I have a 92 4Runner with 225k miles I bought brand new. It has seen minimal rough use, mostly family camping and such. Retirement is finally here and my wife and I want to do some major traveling, possibly Alaska and other very remote areas. One option is replacing my dear friend (car, not wife), other is going through and inspecting and replacing parts that could create problems on such a long journey. Question is, what work to do? Clutch has about 120k, timing chain about the same. Wheel bearings are original, as are the shocks. Would you replace the crankshaft bearings? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd start with baselining all the recommended maintenance - go through the chart and do it all (plugs and wires, filters, belts, wheel bearings, tie rod ends and ball joints, all of it). Then I'd take it to a dealership and give them $100 to inspect it for you - tell them you're planning on voyaging with it and don't want any surprises, they'll know what to look for. I wouldn't crack the engine or transmission for a rebuild unless you've got some reason to think it's needed. If your timing chain is at 120k, definitely change it, I think the interval for that part is 90k. Your back will certainly appreciate new shocks.

Carry a jack and a good spare, make sure it's got air (and make sure the lowering mechanism works!), a can of Fix-A-Flat and a tire plug kit wouldn't hurt, neither would a portable air compressor. Extra belts and all fluids (motor oil, trans fluid, radiator fluid). Extra radiator hoses, and some Rescue Tape, that stuff rocks. Tools, of course. If you're planning on offroading or driving in the rough stuff, I'd pack a spare set of tie rod ends, idler arm, maybe an extra CV shaft.

I'm jealous, have fun!

Welcome! I have a 92 22re as well from Portland. We have a Portland BS thread going here btw.

You should post some pics up of your runner!

As far as the timing chain goes, pop open your valve cover and check the slack in the chain with a screw driver or something. I wouldn't touch the crank bearings unless there is a issue with them. Shocks are pretty reasonable from 4 wheel parts, I got pro comps there for around $40.
If you are going into remote areas, a dual battery setup wouldn't be a horrible idea.
