I'm using amsoil and WIX filters. It's about $70 a change doing it myself, but I'm setup for that so it's easier and more convenient than going to the dealer (and safer, better).
What are you paying for oil change?

The two dealerships I've been to charge $70 or so for an oil change.
DIY is about $30 with Mobil 1 oil and a Toyota filter. I've done that the past few times. It's a PITA but cheaper and quicker than going to a dealership.
Now that I've done it myself and know what a PITA the skid plates and dumb oil filter housing are, I would never take it to a Jiffy Lube. No way would they do it right.

Crazy to me is trusting someone else to do what I can easily do myself.
There is an opportunity to check the undercarriage and lube the driveshaft.
I also like to wash the inside of the skids and remove any debris in that area that was collected while wheeling.
Those can be done while the oil is draining.

I got 3 oil changes semi-synthetic tire rotations and car wash 3 for $150, normally $80 a pop so i saved $120.

Where to dump the oil???
Hey, what are you DIY guys doing with the discarded oil? Who takes that stuff? What do they charge to dump your old oil? I'm about to do my engine oil change and gear oil change.
On line prices for materials:
The Mobil 1 0-20W Synthetic oil cost me <$29 each for a 5 quart bottle. I'll have 3 quarts leftover for next time.
I'm replacing the cartridge with the Baxter Performance remote oil filter adapter so my Mobil 1 extended life spin on cartridge #M1-209A costs $12.74.
The Baxter Performance adapters and related oil line parts are not cheap but it will save me removing my skid plates and dealing with a messy canister filter for future oil changes. The installation is taking me a few hours to fabricate a good mount for the inverted oil filter holder. I'm putting it in the easiest available location for a truck with KDSS - up behind the battery and power box, above the left wheel well.
The oil plug gaskets are $0.78 each for a pack of 10 gaskets, on line.
Bottom line for DIY oil change:
7 quarts of Oil - $42
Spin-on filter - $12.74
plug gasket - - $0.78
oil disposal - $??
Total cost = $55.52 + ??

Put it in the jugs and take it back to the auto parts place, they recycle it for free.

Normally, if a place sells oil to the public, they should be willing to accept the old oil. Some of the local joints, Autozone, Oreilly's and NAPA are hit or miss and I think it's just based on the personal feelings or work ethic of whoever is answering my question over the phone.
I have never had a problem returning used oil at Wal-Mart Supercenter's Lube and Tire. I know they have a cap on the amount you can bring, but it won't exceed a DIY's need (like under 5 gallons). I use the empty DEF jugs from work for the used oil as the Toyo 0-20 only comes in quart bottles.
I see your in CA, so maybe the environmental attitude there makes it more difficult. I think in TX, a business can avoid a purchase fee of new oil if they agree to accept used oil from the public, so it's a financial incentive to do so, plus whatever they make selling the used product to the recycler.

In NY if they sell oil they by law have to take old oil back. A lot of places hum and haw but whatever. I'm sure the government rather you piss them off then dump it in the sewer...
I paid $125 :wow: at the stealership last year in Saratoga.... If anyone knows of any good Toyota dealers PM me. Long Island or Saratoga area... I don't mind paying dealer prices if I know they do a good job but last time I went up to Saratoga another non Toyota dealer they did a terrible job... Lots of seasonal business and I think they just expect you never to come back again...

That is odd. I have never had an auto parts store in Austin or central Texas deny me returning used oil. They do have a limit on how many times you can discard used oil in a given period. They make you complete and sign a form.
I think that prevents businesses from taking advantage of them.

I pay $0...i have lifetime free oil changes at my dealership. It was a promo they ran when I bought mine which is pretty convenient. They quickly changed it to 100k miles a few weeks later. This was the biggest reason I bought it at that dealership.

Just paid $57 for my oil change. This was with a 10% off coupon the dealer had if you made your appointment between 12 and 2 and all taxs/fees etc.
I always changed my own oil all my life but I am retired now and no longer have any interest in doing it anymore. My son says I am lazy and old and he is correct.

I drop off the used motor oil at advance auto no problems .. I mark the containers with what oil is in them . only time they will refuse is if the oil tank is full..
recycled oil is used up in the cold north east .. texas reusing old oil is not a help when your an oil pumping state ..
there is a gas station I will drop off old gas they use the old gas and used engine oils to heat the building ...

I pay under 30 bucks for a full synthetic oil change (Mobil 1 and OEM filter). I spin the wrenches. For my minimal investment, I receive the satisfaction of knowing the oil change was performed correctly on my rig and not butchered by a dealer hack. My local transfer station and several area business' gladly accept used motor oil for their oil fired furnaces, so disposal is never a problem.
Out of curiosity, what is the oil change interval your dealership recommends yo change the oil at? Local dealerships around here all recommend oil cages at 5K miles instead of the 10K Toyota interval. Just wondering if your dealership would push the 10K OIC will free changes.

Garage porn! $30 for that is not bad. Yeah it's a lot more than you'd pay at Advance or Auto Zone or whatever but a WAY nicer tool.
