What breaks on a 4th Gen? (Looking to buy one in a week or so)

68K miles with nothing but routine maintenance. I just replaced the front brake pads and noticed a strut has a small leak. Looks like Bilsteins are in my future :naughty:

I've got a V6 4x4 and had to fly to Raleigh, NC to get it two years ago. They are rare in the southeast. I get 19mpg city, and 23 highway.

I read somewhere that the towing capacity was 6500 LB with the V8. When you say under 3000... How much do you mean it. The boat weighs 4000 basically with fuel. I don't go far with it. But if I did, should I be worried?

Teh V6 will tow 4k just fine if you're not towing hundreds of miles. I've towed about 4500 with mine just fine across town and back. I'm just saying if you do it a LOT the V8 would be more comfortable.

You're going to be hard pressed to find a 03 or 04 V8 4X4 W/ under 100k miles for $15 grand or less. these vehicles tend to hold their value very well.

Actually Ive found quite a few. Not all of them, but theres definitely some out there. Ive found some great deals at a little tiny family owned dealerships honestly. I also can buy whatever I want at an auction at cost, but its only a few hundred dollars cheaper than the ones Ive found at the small dealerships. And as they say "Cash talks and bull**** walks"

He can find it, just may have to travel. Found mine in summer of 09 with 72,000 for $14,000 from a dealer which was a surprise. traveled 300 miles to get it.

Why are you against one with 100K miles? I picked up my 03 Limited 4x4 (fully loaded with everything from heated seats, GPS, to rear air suspension) for $11,500 from a dealer. There were detailed maintenance receipts in the glove box showing it was maintained regularly at the dealer. A carfax also showed it to be a one owner. Deals are there, you just may have to search for them. That said, at 90k you need the timing belt and related stuff done, which can easily add another grand to the cost. IMO you'd be better off finding one just at or over 100k that would be less money and already have this done, unless you can find one with 60-70k miles and wouldn't need the timing belt done for 2-3 years).

Well frankly theres a few reasons. A, if I'm going spend over 10k I want a vehicle to last me a few years. B. I am a Claims Adjuster, I drive a lot. I'll be at 250k in a under 5 years unless I somehow get a company car. C, Ive never owned a vehicle with less than 98k and I'm going to try and get something I don't break 100k in just a month LOL

One of the MODs posted up that once I lift it and throw some bigger tires... Its not gonna like a trailer. This is no tow vehicle, Ive had my fair share of diesel trucks but just not what I want right now. I kind of want to get back into Auto X and a V8 would pull a flat bed trailer and a 2800 LB car just fine. The V6... I think I'm just gonna beat that thing up a bit too much.

Understandable, I just wanted to point out the costs of a vehicle under 100k miles. There's not too much difference in gas mileage between the two, sounds like the v8 is definitely gonna be better suited, I know I wouldn't trade mine.

Your only problem if you go for the v8 is you will be spoilt by the quiet smooth running engine and won't want to go to a 5th Gen until they offer a v8 !

I just bought an 04 V6 4x4 a couple weeks back. It seems to average around 19-20mpg. I have only towed a cargo trailer with about 1500lbs in it. I couldn't really notice the trailer back there. I also have a camper that weighs just under 3k dry. I won’t tow it far and it is mostly on flat ground. If you can hold off until later on in the spring I will give you an update on it towing ability with the extra weight. If you tow allot and up hills or mountains then I would go with the V8 but otherwise the V6 should be adequate but expect to spend time in the right lane. The V6 actual has a little more HP than the V8 but not as much torque.

I had an 01 Grand Cherokee with the I6 and it was a horrid tow vehicle, had no power, got TERIBLE gas mileage, but it had a more comfortable ride.

Eh, I know the timing belt will have to be done. Thankfully I have a good friend that works at Toyota and is also a neighbor. I'm sure I can just pay him cash to do it.

I have the V6 and tow my boat with it that weighs roughly 3000 lbs. The only issue I have towing is when I am going up hills, I could definitely use more torque. Bottom line, the v6 is fine for the weight I have, but would not want to go above that. I have towed roughly 10,000 miles with my boat the last 2 years and have not had one issue. I currently have just over 101,000 miles, I have replaced both front calipers, brakes and tires since I have owned the vehicle. I have done the routine maintenance as well. The only complaint I have is the amount of ground clearance it has stock, but this summer I am putting 5100s all around and air bags in the rear to give me a little lift and to assist with towing.

I've towed nearly 5000 lbs with my V6 and it did great. The only thing that bothers me is towing that kind of weight up long hills. The transmission shifts back and forth a lot, even when I take it out of overdrive. Other than that, the V6 handles up to 5000 lbs relatively easy and I don't feel a lack of power or torque, it's just the transmission downshifting a lot. I bet the V8 would downshift a lot too, but maybe not as much because of the greater torque.

I think the V8 comes with a more robust frame mounted hitch, which might be a consideration.
