What color to powdercoat my wheels?

Hello all,

I am looking at powdercoating the wheels I picked up for my 4Runner. They are the 5 spoke Landcruiser wheels (see attached pictures).

I have also attached a picture of my 4Runner. The lower trim and flares (silver) will be bedlined black, so just keep that in mind.

I'm open to suggestions!

I habe same same paint scheme on my 4runner and just recently painted my flares and bumpers gloss black, and decided on having my wheels powdercoated to match. Although I havent been anle to mount my wheels they look really sweet sitting there.

Sweet! Good to know, any pics of your truck? I'd like to see what it looks like. Funny, you're in PA too haha.

I thought about getting the wheels powdercoated black, but the only thing I don't like about that is it looks like you have steel wheels when your driving around since they're also all black.

Have you thought about a Gun Medal Grey? What ever you do keep it clean and classy looking.

Yeah that's what I was leaning towards. Just wasn't sure how that'd look with bedlined flares and rockers.

Since this thread is about OPINIONS on 4Runner looks I will share mine.

Don't bedliner your flares black. It will of course be a flat-ish black and will very likely look pretty bad after 1-2 years.

I don't think black flares will look good on your 4Runner period. I have gloss black on black so I'm not against the color but if you are looking for style why don't you just color match the flares and go for gun metal wheels.

I agree with brian. Not a big fan of the bed liner unless its just a trail only or mostly rig.
I do however love the gloss black flares which is what I went with.

I agree. Go gloss black on the flares and gloss black on the wheels. I think that is the best way and best/most classy looking. Thats what I plan to do once I get new flares.

Once I got the bumpers and satoshi type grill mode completed...badge to come soon











And my wheels.. not perfect by any means, but they got powdered for free and I got them practically free. Should be mounted friday.





Thats all i got for now. Just got my fourth tire and it should be here thursday so ill be mounting these friday.

What did you do for prep and/or primer?

These are how i got the wheels. From a tundra that was used as a salt/plowtruck.











I used a 3m brand stripper wheel to get as much of the paint and corrosion off as I could. Looked like this once through with thwt.





And then I gave them to my brother who glass bead blasted them. It finsihed up my cleaning work, and also aided in polishing out the pitting. This is what they looked like at this stage.









Then the powder coater got ahold of them and did his work.

Asfar as prep for the flairs, I taped them off which you can see in the first post, sanded them all down with 100 grit. Wiped them down twice with acetone, and then did multiple(like 10) light coats with a rustoleum enamel paint. It is a special paint made for automotive plastics. Ill have to find that leftover can. No primer and no clear coat as the can instructed.

For the front and rear bumpers, I taped and sanded in the same fashion. Did probably six coats. 4 light and maybe 2 heavier coats of rustoleum gloss black automotive enamel, and then 4 light coats of rustoleum crystal clear coat.

Words of wisdom. I cant stress light coats enough. If you lay down a lot of paint it will run. No doubt about it. Spend your time on the prep as always. Tape good lines. Make surethe parts are wiped clean before laying down paint. And dont bite off more then you can chew. I did tbe flares In one saturday, from anout 12:30-8ish and the bumpers each on a seperate day. About 3-4 hours spent on each of those. Any questions let me know

Thanks man. Ive got a grand total of $145 total into those wheels and 4 bfg at kos at about balf tread. So im quite happy with the setup.

my tundra wheels looked like that when i first got them, It took me a good 6-8 hours to clean them up and strip them and get them ready for paint, but I also got a killer deal as well.

I'm a big fan of functionality and style, hence the want for bedlined sides. They will help with rocks flying up and hitting the 4Runner.
