What did our 4Runners cost when they were new?

I just saw a 2013 at the dealer the other day with a whopping $45,900.00 price tag. :wtf:

Got me to thinking that I wonder what the price range was on ours when they were new. My gut tells me they probably sold from around $17k - $20k but that is based on absolutely nothing other than my guess at what prices were in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

For those who bought new..what did you pay?

If I remember correctly my mom paid around $31k for this one... Went to my uncle and now me... I got it for hardly anything since its family

really? that much? kind of surprising..i paid $26k for a new Honda Odyssey in 2001 loaded with NAVIGATION and leather. didn't realize the 4runners were commanding over $30k when they were new.

...although 15 years and still looks brand new is PRICELESS to me!

I just bought my '99 Limited Edition 4X4 with 127k last week for $8,000. (The truck is in immaculate condition and looks/drives like brand new.) I'm sure that when this truck was new it cost close to $40,000 or more.

I just can't believe what they want for new cars. Every once in a while I'll go to the Toyota web page and play around with the "Build your own Toyota" and after I'm done building out the ultimate FJ Cruiser, it comes out to the mid 30's which I understand isn't bad... But still a heck of a lot more than I want to spend on a truck that I'm going to take off-road and deal with the abuse of my family and what not.

'97 I think was listed around $30k, leather/locker/4x4/5-speed.
Wrecked in 2000, saved my life but was a total loss.

2000 limited was around $35k.
Gave to my wife, she traded a few years later for a Sequoia.

'98 bought used VIN lookup puts it at $26k new, cloth/locker/4x4/5-speed. Bought it for about 12% of it's original price! But it's got 240k miles and reeks of cigarette smoke. This is my current project 4Runner. May end up trashing the entire interior, it stinks. Oh, and almost no rust!

Look up your VIN here: VIN Decoder - YotaTech Forums Odd thing is if the 4th character is an H it could be manual or automatic, if it's a G it is always an automatic. Pricing always shows both the manual and automatics with MSRP and invoice prices for each.

i know!! i did notice how crazy that interior looks on the new ones..all that tricked-out electronics makes my head spin.

i love the simple understated look of my current toyota..with the one addition of a nice head unit that handles my smart phone.

all those features on the new ones scares me. i just see $$$$'s if any of that starts acting up.

JT3HN86R8W0138181 is my VIN. I tried an OH instead of the ZERO after the W but didn't work. Any idea from looking at this if I messed up one of the numbers/letters?

My 99 SR5 was looking to fetch $38,500 according to the window sticker.

High dollar options were:
Highlander Sport package
TRD Supercharger (I am now on the 3rd one, apparently)
Upgraded Chrome 16" wheels

Im actually curios how the value in the 5th gen models will hold up. I guess it comes down to build quality and the reliability of the electronics. If you buy a BMW or a Mercedes the value plumets drastically. I feel this is due to the horrible reliability of the electronics and of the motor. My mom own a 2013 BMW 535i and its aleady been in the shop twice. Makes me curious what will be working and what wont in the 5th gens when there 14 years old...

My parents bought a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee for 45 I think, the 4runner was in the 50's all said and done.


Rediculous when you consider the cost of a vehicle. Seems nobody understands the value of money these days. The new 4runners in Canada I think start in the mid 40's... I'm curious, but I think 60 could probably be met.

EDIT: Sorry, start at 38 + taxes, etc, and end at $55 with no additional options or "platinum" plans. Just a white Limited...

Thats exactly how I feel, when I went to a Manufacturers Convention here in the Beach, all the big name companies come and show off their 2014 lines, and I looked at all the new Toyotas, and man, they have so many bells & whistles.

I feel the same way when I sit in it and look at it all. I feel bad for my children, when they all become electricians, just from working on their vehicles.

Yeah, I got my girlfriend a '01 VW Passat, and that thing has been acting up since we purchased it. And it is in great shape compared to most we've seen. And let me just put it this way, the VW dealership knows me on a first name basis. The looks are so deceiving on BMWs as well. The components live to only around 90,000 miles, and then the vehicles begin to significantly deteriorate if they aren't in a car fanatics hands.

That's pretty cool, but the MSRP listed is the base, no options price tag. You can usually determine what factory options your 4Runner has on it by checking out old brochures (toyotareference.com is great for that)

Plus a lot of bolt-on type options were installed at the port, either by Toyota or by its two independent distributors (Gulf States and Southeast States). Stuff like roof racks, running boards, rear wind deflectors, etc - all port installed. If you went back to 2002 or thereabouts and watched 4Runners roll off the boat in Long Beach, none would have roof racks or wind deflectors on them.

I have the Monroney sticker for my '97 SR5, Anthracite Metallic, V6, 4x4, 5 speed, Oak Leather, Premium sound, Moonroof, Rear diff lock, Optional larger brakes, wheels and tires W/4.10 gears, rear heater equipped 4Runner, which I bought brand new.

MSRP was $33,018

I did better than that on the deal though.

mine was just over 41k (00' Lim) and yeah, these were expensive trucks at the time. I remember my sister bought one new in 98', a sweet black limited and I could never figure out how the hell she afforded it- the found out a relative bought it for her.

I work for BMW and I can't believe how much new cars are, a fully loaded 328 is well into the 50's, a 335is in our showroom in 2011 was 67k, insanity, these people are out of their minds carrying that kind monthly expense....even if you are making a decent living, that's still a lot of coin not spent on retiring....
