I just was looking at my handles this past weekend thinking there had to be something more stout. Did the 4th gen handles just screw in or was there some fab needed? Thanks for posting

Good start. I really like the TRD grille over stock, but I can't bring myself to spend $500+ on 2 pieces of plastic. lol

5th gen handles are mounted using weak metal anchors that simply "click" into square holes behind the headliner. The 4th gen handles were meant to be bolted on instead. So to attach it I bought two heavy duty drywall anchors made of metal, attached 5 inch ropes to each, and used the rope to drive the anchor into the hole and hold it in there while I drive the bolt though the handle and into the threaded whole in the anchor. I also added couple washers between the anchor and the handle so that the headliner is not compressed.
But, as one of the forum members has already brought to my attention, this mod is potentially very dangerous. Should there be a collision, a bigger handle will be one of the things the driver's head may hit. Also it may be in the way of side/curtain airbags. This could be the only reason all new 4Runners/GX's/LC's have these weak collapsible but more compact and safe handles.

Yeah, it's an absurd amount of money for what you get. My approach was to just put that much less down on the car and basically roll it in to the payment. I did save a bunch by not having the dealer install the running boards. Found those in here, relatively cheap.

LOL, that's a terrible idea! I mean, you got what you wanted, but now you're paying interest on a grille...
