What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

Spent $1.49 for a new hack saw blade and cut the exhaust off after the rear axle right where the elbow curves to take it out the back. It now exits under the truck pointed towards the ground just behind the rear passenger tire. Only did a quick test but it appeared to eliminate the sulfur smell produced while under hard throttle with the rear window down.

Hauled away a new little camping trailer!



While I still go on a lot of solo trips and will be sleeping in the runner. When going on camping trips with my wife, we need a bit more room. This provides a nice little getaway from the weather and should provide the same comfort of sleeping "indoors" I get in the runner It pops up into a hard sided A Frame in case anyone hasn't seen one. Weather tight.

Tows nicely, can see out the back over the top.

Yes it's tiny, 10 foot, 1400 lbs. But has most everything in it. Heater, AC, water heater, outside shower, sink, stove, propane/electric fridge, "Cathedral" views to the outside. Even has the "Offroad package"

It's definitely a bit cheaply made, partially to sace weight but also partially due to cheap labor I'm guessing. I'll need to go around and work on some things. The crimped wiring to the battery is a joke, will have to solder all that, also install some 12v sockets and purpose build storage inserts etc. Mods incoming! It did come with a nice big Interstate deep cycle and two propane tanks though!

Definitely going to eat 4-5 mpg on trips though!! And add 20% or so to travel time due to reduced speeds and more frequent gas stops. Will be interesting to see how long it takes to tow to Moab, a "perfect" 12 hour drive from here.

I really want to, because I'm just waiting for the day when I crush it after sliding off a rock or ledge, but I'm worried about the exhaust heat pooling up under the vehicle (idling in winter time or something like that). What are the downsides to cutting the exhaust where you did? I really want to do it if it won't cause any issues.

I really want to, because I'm just waiting for the day when I crush it after sliding off a rock or ledge, but I'm worried about the exhaust heat pooling up under the vehicle (idling in winter time or something like that). What are the downsides to cutting the exhaust where you did? I really want to do it if it won't cause any issues.

I will try to snap a photo sometime that shows the "plume" of where it is coming out of the truck to try and alleviate concern. Most of the exhaust gas is being forced from underneath the truck as the pipe is still angled out, its not dumping straight down under the truck.

I think there is certainly increased risk of a perfect storm of events causing some issues with this change but that increase is so slight and the likely hood of that perfect storm so minimal that if I was worried about things like that I wouldn't drive or leave the home or add a large enough amount of weight to effect my braking distance, or increase my center of gravity to reduce handling characteristics or take my truck to remote places etc etc etc......

I might be able to borrow an O2 meter from work and leave it under the truck at idle and see if there is any displacement of O2 under the truck with no movement, I doubt it but it would be interesting to confirm

That does alleviate some of my concern, thank you. From looking at my truck, you'd wonder why I have any worries about cutting the exhuast, but I just don't want to make a mistake. I'll do some more research and hopefully, eventually get over it!

Got this all wrapped up yesterday. Gobi Stealth with Rigid 40" curved up front and some back-up lights in the rear. BIG shout out to [MENTION=124732]LawnDart[/MENTION] for referring me to 503 Motors down in Portland. It was a drive but well worth it. They went above and beyond. Without asking or charging more then installed clear bra at the base of the hatch and behind the ladder. Then washed, polished and waxed my roof before installing the rack and even drove my son and I to the local mall to grab some food and catch a movie while waiting. That is customer service.

So that it doesn't stay an inside joke, a well known local photographer who I do some work with saw my truck during a lunch meeting, and her enthusiasm got the better of her, and she climbed up the ladder rather haphazardly. In the process, her leather boots (which were well worn, exposing the leather tacks on the front of the shoe) scraped across the tailgate putting a 1' (foot not inches) scratch down to the bare metal).

She paid to have the tailgate repainted, but we decided after to put some 3M clear bra behind the ladder as extra protection going forward. The CBI bumper also blocks it so that random people can't climb on back.

extremely easy! actually the hardest part was deciding where to stick the pin switch. I ended up sticking it near the driver side headlight after i had to slightly enlarge an existing hole in the metal, and then open up the hole in the plastic piece that covers up the radiator. I can send you pics if you want em, PM me.

If you go into it already knowing where you want to stick the pin switch you will be ahead of the game. Also check out the youtube video that beerad did (called anti dark lighting or something) im at work so i cant link it but its easy to find.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park. There's a ranch within the park that is only accessible by high clearance vehicle. You will need to go to the Ranger station in the Pine Spring campground to grab a key for the gate but it is definitely worth it.
