160510 – Stillwater NWR to Sheep Canyon
Tuesday 10 May 2016. Went into Fallon early in the morning. Second one in the barbershop for a haircut. When I was finished I decided, what the heck; let’s check out some dirt! The truck has all my gear in it from the last few treks. I’ve got a thermos of coffee and plenty of water. I pull out the Delorme Nevada topo atlas and turn on the gps. Where to go? How about driving out on the Stillwater national Wildlife Refuge and see what turn up.
After all the snow and rain since the first of the year the ranches are green; all the canals are full; the cattle are fat and everywhere. A couple miles out on the refuge road I come to the sign that says, “La Plata. Mountain Wells and Dixie Valley” I don’t necessarily want to go all the way to La Plata or Dixie Valley but let’s see what this road is like.
The first couple miles is up a wash (Mountain Well Canyon) but has been graded. Basically a soft gravel road. After about 4 miles I spot a track that turns out of the wash and heads east and climbs up Sheep canyon. This track needs 4wd but is still relatively mild. I pass Lower Sheep Canyon Well with a windmill pump and a corral. Beyond that I come to Sheep Canyon Well and a fork in the trail. To the right it goes to Richey Springs and Mountain Well. I take the left fork and very soon need low range. This track is fun and in several places crosses arroyos. Each one I get out and walk across first and then continue on. Another two miles and the track ends at Sheep Spring at about 6500 feet.
I turn around and backtrack to the track to Mountain Well. This track meanders up and down back and forth past Mud Hole Spring Ripley Spring and eventually comes to Mountain Well. There have been cattle grazing everywhere. At one point where Diamond Canyon splits away from Mountain Well Canyon there is an intimidating mud are to cross. At least it is only about thirty feet across and doesn’t look to deep So I gun it and soak a few head of cattle with mud.
From there it is maybe eight miles further down the canyon and back where I started on the Wildlife Refuge.

Diff breather mod done. Time to go swimming.
(I cannot tell you how freakin happy it makes me to be bouncing along a washed out boulder strewn access trail to a hiking trail head only to see 4x4 pick ups and awd cuv's parked along the side because they could not make it further on the trail and I just keep truckin all the way to the end. I love this beast of a truck!)

Looks good, did you do the front windshield too? I did mine with the lightest ceramic tint and it really helps.

No I thought about it but decided not to (no real reason as to why).. I'm sure it makes a world of difference though, I might be moving to Phoenix in a few months and I bet I will be wishing I had it down there!

No off-road fun today, pulled 4 of 5 stumps with the TE today. One held on and made me dig 4 holes in my yard. My son was at the dirty end.
I used a snatch strap, the stubborn one pulled me back after I hit the end. Felt funny to be on the power and being pulled back.

LOL. My girls were riding their scooters out front the other day with the neighbor's girl. I pulled 2 beers out of the 4Runner for Joe-neighbor- and myself. He was like- I gotta get one of those things!
