Damn son!
I heard this is a crazy a$$ trail.. how do you rate it after going through it?
This is Flagstaff AZ, hiking near Mount Humphries the highest peak in AZ and then directly to the East of there is Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and several other indian ruins there, and then just South, basically attached to it is Cinder Hills off-road area, pretty cool bunch of spider trails all over basically piles of cinder you can zig zag through and climb up to the top of a big double volcano crater. First time there pretty fun place to explore, but probably lots more fun on an ATV or motorcycle.

It's not crazy, but you want to go with more than one vehicle and an experienced spotter. Where Black Bear gets its notoriety from is people going up there, and having someone who doesn't know how to spot...try to spot.
The hardest areas are the stair steps and the 1st and 3rd switchbacks. The 1st requires someone to physically guide you to the ledge, so you can then backup. Most people required 4-5 turns, I did it in 2 because I know my truck well enough to pick my lines, and I had Jason Demello guide me around as he was our trail leader.
Here's the skinny, black bear isn't hard, however it has zero margin for failure. I'd say I was more nervous doing Moab Rim in June, where if you flop you potentially damage the vehicle, vs black bear, where you destroy the vehicle and die. There's about 1.5-2 feet on your left for the stair steps, so you just go 4Lo (you'll be in low the entire time since your engine will feel gutless at that altitude anyways), you'll be aired down, and there's no prize for speed. So you just ride the brakes slowly, and your spotter just keeps you aware of your position to the cliff face and the ledge. Easy.
The turns are a bit harder because you can't see where your wheels are in relation to the rather LONG drop. Ouray isn't for beginner drivers, and I'd say you want to be really in tune with your vehicle before hand. Just getting down to the stair steps I was on 3 wheels because of my longer than FJ wheel base. The people behind me started panicking because they saw me wobble on 3 wheels, despite me knowing I could have put it in park, and had a drink while the truck just sat there waving it's rear right foot at me all day.
Basically here's my take, Moab you're very likely going to incur some damage in your truck, but you can get towed out easily. Ouray you may not put a single pin stripe in your truck, but you're navigating terrain that could easily be certain death if you make a colossally dumb move.
Two different beasts. I hope that makes sense.

Yup, that's exactly what I heard. To each is own, but "Certain death" equates to crazy to me lol!! I dont know if i'll ever have the balls for that.

Well i mean NOTHING is certain.
Honestly I really enjoy the experience, and if you channel the stress it's really rewarding. I blast classic rap music and just enjoy the ride. I think I did Stair Steps while listening to Tone Loc

Successfully tested our new off-road bike rack mod in the Sierra Mountains near Downieville. Even got up trails that turned around a lifted Jeep Rubicon without dragging the racks/bikes
Also scored a sweet 4x4 dispersed camping site nearby.

After washing mine from all that dirt, I somehow managed to get my first 2 pinstripes. Not sure how or where, maybe the night run.... Looks like they'll be able to be buffed out though!
By the way, I forgot to take pictures of all the infernos together.. I think there were 4 or 5 I saw over the weekend.
