I had my 10,000 mile service done today.
Yesterday on the freeway, something hit my windshield and made a tiny chip. Shortly after I got home, it suddenly turned into a 5" long crack:
Of course the dealer wanted to sell me a new windshield, but I'm hoping it can be repaired, at least enough to prevent it getting worse. I really hate the idea of having to replace the whole thing. I keep hearing about bad experiences some folks have had with replacements, such as the seal never being as good as the original seal, etc. Not to mention that I've got a $500 deductible on my insurance so I'd be out of pocket on it.

1) I'd think that's likely going to need to be replaced. A tiny chip is one thing, but that's a pretty big damaged area
2) Double-check with your auto insurance. Typically it'd be covered under comprehensive coverage, but some insurers have low or zero cost glass repair/replacement. Mine doesn't, but yours may

Most ins companies allow 1 windshield replacement per year no deductible if you have full coverage . Safelite does a good job and will do it onsite even at your work .. they also do that injection stuff on small chips / cracks ..

Can't fix that brother, that will have to be replaced. I heard good things about safelight. Most dealers don't do windshields in house they outsource it anyway.I had my 10,000 mile service done today.

Arrived back in Florida at 7:00 EST after a two week road trip. Put 3,500+ miles in over the two weeks from Miami to Northern Vermont and back (with the usual MD family stops in between). Left Maryland at 1:00 pm yesterday to avoid the storm, only hit rain all through the night, nothing Frozen. I did drive from 28 degrees with snow on the ground to 77 degrees and sweaty, muggy sunshine in 18 hours though.

Buy one of those kits that let's you fill it in with resin. I got an 8 inch Crack 1 month after owning it. Hasn't spread since. *knocks on wood*

Congrats. I almost went with them, but I needed something different for my wife and mother in law to get in with. They are both prone to being a bit clumsy at times and didn't want them getting their foot caught
I went with the Toyota Crushed Oval steps and I'm happy with them.

I personally wouldn't go with Safelite. I've had to use them a few times, and each time it was horrible. Their customer service was atrocious at best, and the windshield instal was terrible. I'd go with a reputable local installer and some PGW glass, but that's just me. Either way, take some time to do your research on local companies.

I have a few chips on my windshield that were filled in successfully but no crack line like in your case [MENTION=137107]Ray Dunakin[/MENTION].
On my last repair visit I asked what it would cost to replace the glass for these 5th Gens. Apparently, with the wiper-heater element the price goes up to around $890.00 in the DC-Balt. Metro area. So the $500.00 deductible would still get you further than replacing it on your own. Unless of-course you forgo or don't have the wiper heater element.
I have been told by the glass folks that, sealant won't work for lines that go farther out than the radius of a $.25 piece from the center pit.
