What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

I mapped out my next tire purchase. there is a CLEAR winner here IMO, with what I'm looking for. A tall, not super heavy, not too wide, great off roading/overlanding AT tire. (S/T maxx 255/80). Will make an official spreadsheet soon.

Maybe we should sticky this.

Btw I was only looking into 275/285 sized tires. That's why you will only find a limited size range listed. Many tires do not offer a 275 also.

Why no comparison with other 255 width tires?

Installed hopkins insight brake controller. 15 minute install max, even with my kids helping it took longer to open the package than it did to install it.

Then went for a tow test of the R-pod 182g 100% stock. Tounge weight 372 pounds, rpod 2990 as it sits, will change with equipment like batteries and LP added. The rear dropped about 1.7 inches with three adults, two kids and simulated camping load and my 90-pound lab in the back. It leveled the truck off, I was expecting the front end to feel lighter like it does when we pack for vacation but it felt fine. I followed a pre-planned route with speed, the wind, many turns and elevation changes, insane Nashville drivers, passed by 18-wheelers, etc. absolutely no issues. No sway, slight kick, no problems. Despite the incorrect ball drop (due to the sag, dealer borrowed, a straight ball mount will level the trailer) it towed like a dream. Will likely install the E2 hitch to level it out after I've towed it for a while, so I know how it behaves. I will retest with a level ball mount once it has been fully prepped before we take delivery this week.

Now to waste three hours of my life reading the forum to determine how to monitor my transmission and other temps. If you have any shortcuts, such as purchase this specific OBD wireless reader, the torque pro app, create these PID's...I'm all ears! It would be nice to see this on a Garmin or other separate display from my iphone to make things clean, but it looks like Garmin may have abandoned that product.

I believe a scangauge will show transmission temp readout...at least I know it does for the Tacoma.

I went with ultragauge for the significant reduction in cost, and I know those have come a long way since I purchased mine. The Ultragauge that I have DOES NOT show tranny temp, but I'm told that it can be programmed (not sure how though).

Terra Grapplers I had such high hopes for you.

Tested the tires on unplowed access roads. Squirrely as hell in 4h. 4lo not much better. Aired down to 20 psi. Better but tried turning around in trail to make another run. Got hung up in slight ditch decline. 4lo atrac, nope. Lock rear diff, unh uh. Shoveled a bit and tried crawl control, just ground away and polished the bowls deeper. Finally aired down to 15, shoveled some more and backed out. In all fairness though this was powder over icey crust on top of solid ice. On the snowy roads they did great. 4hi with terrain select on sand, mud keeps the truck stable in varying snow depths. I guess they will do for now. Eventually I will get Ridge Grapplers but for now I will get chains, probably v bars.

Though I don't deal with conditions nearly that "wintery," I have had similar experience with the Nittos. I will not be purchasing those again.

Did my oil change Thursday left my skid plate off to just make sure there's no leaks. Ended up getting 6 stitches in my palm Friday at work so skid is still off.

Installed my auto vent shade visors yesterday and a new cabin air filter.

Tried out a few new trails. Did not expect the Pirellis to pull through, yet they did.

Bull Bar and Roof Rack

Got a cheapo roof rack, I am pleased with it, and a budget bull bar. Light hook up will have to come another day. Cheers.

Rear KDSS cylinder leaking. 55k miles. Perhaps it wallows a bit more than usual, and I swear it clunks over bumps in turns, but those may be my hallucinations. Replacement later this week once parts arrive. Yes, you should buy the extended warranty or self-warranty with cash in the bank. My experience is atypical, only one they have seen here. Some minor issues caused me to purchase the warranty, which has now paid for itself. Even a Toyota can break.

It looks like the "Ultraguage MX1.3" is a good choice for standalone temperature monitoring.

Well, I just drove like a mad man for the past 90 minutes to the Staging area for the Oroville Damn issues. It was quite shocking to see the mass evacuations and lines of vehicles leaving the area and you're the only sole driving to the area. I hope all of those evacuated do not lose a thing and have their homes to return back to.

Back home for now. Spent last night at the OES (Office of Emergency Services) command center with the Sacramento Drowning Accident Rescue Team prepared to perform swift water recoveries or evacuations due to the spillway issues at the Oroville Damn.

Spelt, well, kind of in the back of the 4Runner. It was a long night.

I've been looking at small campers for the past few years, but I've never owned one. We have friends with everything from pop-ups to class A's and mega airstreams, no shortage of advice and we've spent time in all of them. Plenty of miles towing big heavy things under my belt, usually with a long wheelbase diesel but some with a 2 door wrangler. A few blowouts but I've never had any major towing issues. I still have access to a Duramax but wanted something small and lightweight that could fit my small family for short trips to the thousands of parks in the southeast and beyond. Will make tailgating nice, too.

After looking at everything on the market (Under 3000 pounds dry, accommodations for two adults/2 small kids) Rpod's appear to be well designed, and most of them I've looked at are well constructed with quality parts. In a previous life, I covered most of the companies in the RV industry as a vendor, my contacts all praised these campers. There is nothing else on the market (mostly due to litigation by forest river/berkshire) that is similar. It's been a learning experience for sure, but they are the best selling ~20-foot campers for a reason. We take delivery in two days or so.

To keep this somewhat 5th gen related: Seeking advice on what I can purchase today for OBD based monitoring of my fluid temps...scanguage type or phone based app/adapter.

for monitoring, I've had great luck with my cheap ebay OBDII Bluetooth adapter and the torque app on an android phone.

You'll need to add the programming/codes for the trans temps readouts (pan and converter), but that's easy. I monitor engine coolant, both trans temps, voltage, intake air temp and throttle position. I wish we could get engine oil ttemp too.

Might want to plan to add a trans cooler and some rear airbags too. Both are under $100 each and work well.

Grabbed lunch with the girlfriend today while the Nor'easter was still happening and after dropping her off went to the local wildlife refuge in hopes that the roads were not plowed. That was not the case but still got to test the handling in some snow. Snapped this picture at one point.

You nailed it!

Better make sure you have the spring buckets oriented correctly. If you have them upside down, you'll get that.

Yep, that is exactly what I did. But I did follow typical guy protocol and didn't read any instructions and I definitely didn't ask for directions. So I don't think I have to turn in my man card yet, right?

When I went to post a picture, it saw it and immediately knew that was my problem. I did the math and determined that was how it added about 3.5" to what I wanted. I pulled them, flipped the seat, and reinstalled. All good now!

100% chrome free! Nox Lux Painted Emblem Blackout Kit - Magnetic Gray (1G3)

I finally got around to painting the Nox Lux emblem blackout kit for my 2016 Trail Premium. I only did the rear, since I have the TRD front grille which has dark silver painted "TOYOTA" lettering already. I would've painted the front grille Toyota "T" emblem if I had kept my original grille.

I decided the black-on-black wouldn't provide enough contrast of the lettering against the black Trail trim in the rear so I painted the black plastic letters with automotive touch up paint using the factory color for magnetic gray, 1G3, procured from what I think is the best automotive touch paint website out there, automotivetouchup.com.

If I were to do this over again, I would've used a plastic parts adhesion promoter before priming to prevent chipping and ensure paint bond longevity.

First was a test spray on the "SR5" part with a single coat of paint and 2 coats matte clear coat. The matte clear looked too dull when held up near the car. I wanted the look to be conceivably "factory" so I decided some gloss clear would go on last. From the test spray, just setting the lettering down on a flat surface did not permit adequate coverage on the sides of the letters and caused the lettering to stick the flat surface.

As they say, it's "all in the prep" so I used a styrofoam board base with straws elevating the lettering so they could be spun around and sprayed from the sides and any angle easily. This worked very well and highly recommend this method if you paint your emblems. The steps performed were: prep, 3 light coats primer, 4 coats paint, 2 matte clear and 2 gloss clear for more of a satinish finish. I even like the texture, sort of similar to the emblem texture on the Limited.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the look. You can clearly read the lettering from afar and really makes the car look sinister yet, something that could've come from the factory. Now I'm 100% chrome free!

All that work and no clear? Edit: nvm, I read the part about the matte -> satin. I was just following the pics. :D

I do like the matched paint though.

Thanks! I ordered the ultraguage MX to monitor the transmission temp, will see how it works out. Weird OBDII apps out there for the iphone, I'm just going to let it be a phone. Still pissed that they changed the way it communicates with the vehicle, I no longer get audio prompts when connected via USB, this becomes a hassle to use google maps on long trips...when you need to hear the prompts and like some battery life. Guess I'm getting old but I'm going back to dedicated devices and the phone as a backup.

If I get most of that 1 3/4 inches back from the E2, I'll be happy. Otherwise, airbags are in my future. Having an issue with the rear suspension (see my previous post in this thread) and I want to keep it all OEM for now.

Today my 4runner helped save lives.

So I was having fun with my truck in a foot of fresh snow on a huge field by the water. I was testing the new KO2s. I noticed a police officer jump out of his car running towards the water. I asked if he needed help. He told me a car had gone through the ice somewhere close and they were trying to find them.

He asked if I was able to check at the tip of the field if I could see something since his car was no going through that deep snow. I said sure.

Well when i reached the tip I saw 3 black dots about half a kilometer from the shore. I floored it back to the cop and when I arrived the firefighters were there. One of them tried to come to me with a ford escape and go stuck. I explained where i saw the people. And before I knew it, they were tying a small inflatable boat behing the Runner and 4 of them jumped in the truck.

We arrived at the tip and they went in to save the people. Turns out one of them had severe hypothermia and they put her in the truck so I could take her to the waiting Ambulance.

So yeah, it was an intense day for my new baby. Not even 2000km, the first time in real snow and already it's saving lives. What a great day.

So this happened yesterday. I went back today to have more fun in the snow. I took a video of the place. If you are wondering where the people were, go to the very end of the video. When you see the red sign with yellow paint on it. Just keep going 500 meters on the ice and they were there.

I had to take the rescue team to the tip where the sign is. Their trucks and cars couldn't go through the snow. Then I took back one of the victim back to the road by the hydro dam road.

The KO2s are killing it in the snow! I knew the runner was capable but i must admit. Today surprised me. 15 inches in some places and no problems.
