Took mine through the smoky mountains, D was useless, I had to put it in S mode and controlled my shifting.

Don't you mean the Misty Mountains? I traverse that pass when heading into Rivendell to get groceries.

Its the best way to do it. In western NC the mountains make it difficult so i spent a lot of time coasting downhill in 3rd to save my brakes.
This is the case with most cars in the mountains so just be grateful that our transmissions allow us to select gears, easily and intuitively at that!

Been there. Done that. ...with Alamo and Red McCombs on my 2008 Tacoma. I eventually got North Park Toyota to fix it after they moved down by the Tundra Plant. ...and then I sold it. Go figure.
Best of luck with it! I hope Alamo has gotten better since they moved up 281. They are about 5 minutes from my office, but I still use Toyota of Boerne. So far so good.

You may not want to do that so much...
After I hooked up my Scangauge and saw how much heat is introduced into the transmission from downshifting I decided to just use the brakes more often. You would be shocked by how quickly the temps get over 200.

Interesting I never really thought about that... yeah warped rotors and brake pads are much more "disposable items" than a transmission.

Well that's freakin' awesome. Is it just a mode where it follows the transmitter? What does it use to do obstacle avoidance?
