True, but there will always be places where you might not have shade options! The ARB's aren't heinously expensive but there seems to be zero good/clean options for mounting one to an OEM roof rack. And I don't want to have to buy it twice (buy short length one for stock rack and eventually have to buy full length one for an aftermarket rack).

I also like to give the dog as much room as possible in the trunk area so being able to toss things on the top would be super beneficial. I just can't plop down nearly $2k and be able to justify it in the near term, gahdang!

I was in the same exact boat, but then stumbled across a few options that made it much more justifiable. I got a Rhino Rack Steel Mesh Platform size Small ($210) and mounted it to Factory OEM Crossbars ($20ish for custom mounts and $80 for used crossbars). I then got the ARB 2000m awning ($290) and the ARB Modular Awning brackets ($11) each. So around $600 and it looks clean. I can fit my MaxTrax and a Plano Rifle Case up top. I use the Rifle Case to store recovery gear and other items that normally would have been rolling around the back.

You can see in these pictures how it is setup. But in these pictures the awning was mounted with brackets that I made and they just fell apart after many miles on the trail. Highly recommend just getting the ARB mounts.

Thanks guys! Nope I have a 3 inch lift and while at full lock and braking it does rub slightly, this will easily be fixed with an alignment this Tuesday [emoji1303] also trimmed as much as I could off the front bumper so there is loads of clearance there. i think at its widest point i took about an inch and a half off the front bumper and fender liner pushed forward the same amount.

Looks good! Guessing no issues with the awning hanging forward that far unmounted? I thought they suggest no more than like a foot unmounted or something.

That's the small rhino mesh platform? Is the large too big then?

Camping

Spent a night in the woods. The 4Runner really wanted to get out of town.


I slept in the 4Runner this time. I had enough room to stretch out on my sleeping platform with the passenger seat moved forward (I'm 6'1"). The platform is just a piece of plywood on top of a Plano 1919 box in the back and a 14 Gallon Rubbermaid in the front. It was nice and flat.
