Haha, as I was writing I was thinking "this would make more sense with a picture" but I pulled off the awning before I took one so I could run the car through the car wash to get 1000 miles of bugs off everything.
Here's a super ghetto diagram instead:
This is the kind of u-bolt I'm talking about (except larger).
I just went to Lowe's with the OEM crossbar bolt to figure out what thread it was (I think it's M6 if I remember correctly) and then grabbed a couple of bolts with the same thread but like twice as long and lockwashers and threaded that through the front-most awning bracket hole then just "wrapped" the u-bolt around the rear-most part of the awning bracket and tightened the flatbar part of the ubolt down onto the top of the bracket. It kind of floats above the crossbar but it seemed to work fine. Worst case, you could jam some cardboard underneath it if you're worried about fluttering or something.
...Ah-Ha!....NOW I get it!...and trust me...I wasn't even close before ya added that diagram!....LOL!...:doh:

Yeah, it was pretty simple and didn't cause me any damage or permanent modifications to the existing roof rack. You could also just drill holes in the cross bars for mounting the ARB bracket but I didn't want to make any permanent changes so someone can take the rack off my hands happily.
But yeah, there are two star-head bolts on either side of the cross rails, just pull the one that's furthest outboard out and replace that with a longer bolt that can reach the female threads when the bracket is on and then make sure the u-bolt you get is wide enough to accommodate the width of the crossbar.
Drove to Glacier National Park with a couple buddies to ride the Going To The Sun Road before they open it to vehicle traffic this past weekend. 60 miles and 4,500 feet of elevation gain. It was amazing.
Also got to test out my awning. Think I might have to upgrade from a 2000 to a 2500. The 2000 is sufficient but having another .5 meters would be nice. Wouldn't work on the stock roof rack, but my Gobi should be showing up in the next couple weeks and it would certainly work on that.

Had a killer Saturday. Went 9 miles mountain biking and 12 miles kayaking. Needless to say Sunday was a lazy day.

..But I wanted something stronger..so ordered the LFG Ruggedized cross-bars instead...
...but I do believe your idea should still work...in one form or another...

This is true. The seller I found also had them on sale, and they discounted the cost of shipping for me (which makes a huge difference for AK). I ended up getting them shipped up here for $750 total, which is significantly cheaper than any other options I've found. Not many people willing to ship to AK. :smow:

Finally got my DIY roof rack painted and mounted for my next trip. Borrowed a fairing from a buddy to test fit while I make my own.
My gears and lockers showed up today as well, which really freakin made my day. Should have them in tomorrow. Can’t think of a better reason to take a day off! Solenoids are prepped and ready to go!
