Mounted an ARB Awning on the roof!

...Howdy, again!

...Just catching up on all the stuff I dun did over the past few weeks.....

....I added the LFD ruggedized cross-bars to my truck, as noted in the above posts....and decided to also add an ARB Awning onto the bars, using the ARB Universal mounting brackets...

...The brackets are heavy and sturdy, and mounted onto the bars like they were always a part of the cross-bars, and the awning mounts to the brackets very well....making the entire package look like it was part of the 4runner from the start....

...Up to this point...I have not been able to detect any appreciable road-noise from the brackets or awning..which kinda surprised me..but in a good way!...:biggrin2:

ARB Awning Mounting Info

...Welcome back to...Part-2 regarding the ARB Awning mounting...

ARB recommends NOT having any part of the awning hang/float free for more than 700mm in length....

...Since our 4Runner's have limited distance fore-to-aft for cross-bars, it is a tight squeeze to make it all work out ok...

...Now, for Y'all that are metric-challenged....700mm works out to about 27.5 inches max....

...I moved the awning back as far as I dared to the back tailgate on my 2018, as you can see from the below pics...

...That gave me about 28 inches of overhang on the front of the awning from the most forward cross-bar, so I aint gonna sweat an extra half-inch of unsupported stuff up there, as the awning and brackets are really Solid up on the cross-bars to begin with!...

...( I will say..it takes a little bit of ingenuity to get the awning up to the brackets and hold it there while trying to thread the bolts and lock-nuts onto the brackets!...My solution was to slide some molding strips between the rails and roof...letting the strips overhang out by about 6-inches...then lift the awning up onto the strips...and lift each end up to the bracket slots...then mess with the bolts one at a time )....:fear:

...Just be aware of this limitation if ya go with this setup beforehand...I truly cant see it whippin around up there or tearin free no matter how fast ya go...or how rough of a trail ya might go on offroad?....

...( 'go on offroad'...and we wonder WHY foreigners don't learn English?! )...LOL!...:drum:

...I think the only concern might be snagging low branches between the awning and roof would be about the only issue we might have here?...

Nice! I'm jealous. Our search for a good GX here has been exhaustive.

Its a 2008 one owner that has 130k. Im alittle worried about the mileage but hopefully i wont have any trouble. I did pull the records and the original owner had every service done on the spot at the Lexus dealer.

...Added An Interior Gear-Box...

...Howdy, again!

...The last thing I got done over the past few weeks was part of my overall plan to convert my 4Runner into a self-contained camera-platform....

...I am a Nature-Photographer, and I specialize a lot in time-lapses...which means setting up camera equipment in one spot for hours...sometimes an entire day or night....

...That, of course, means I have to stay with the gear so it doesn't wander off in someone else's vehicle if I was away....which means I need to sleep in the truck...so I am working on a sleeping platform...but that will be posted up later once it is completed....

...But, there are times I need to setup away from the truck...and I want the rest of my camera-gear safe inside the 4Runner....

...I ordered my TRD-OR with the sliding cargo deck...and had to wait an extra 4 months as there was NOT one to be found in all of North America at the time...

...I purchased a very large, sturdy, lockable poly trunk from Tractor-Supply...( fyi: a very similar one can be found at Lowes )and mounted it to the sliding deck with bolts and nylon locking nuts...( being careful NOT to drill thru the activating cables that operate the latching device on both sides of the deck )...:wow:

...( I removed the two access-panels on the deck to double-check WHERE the cables snaked underneath and did some small diameter test drills first )...

...pics below will make this a lot clearer...hopefully?...:director:

...Bottom line is:....even tho I have an alarm system on the truck..with added glass-breakage sensors...I also have a fully lockable box inside that would be very difficult to break into....and cannot be removed easily as it is part of the deck!...( not to mention....it is heavy as all Hell! )...:Cry:

If you got a good price I'd take it and be happy with it. My plan was to get something similar and take the extra money vs new we have to Gary at Mudrak for a rebuild and redo the interior with katzkin.

Bumped up the hitch since I moved the spare into the vehicle. Ended up cutting off the exhaust and bench pressing/ bending up the trailer power feed. Lowest point now is the stock driverside tow point.

Was shipped the wrong bolt pattern 5th wheel and didn't have enough hardware to mount my jerry can holder so those will be put on later.

Was shipped the wrong bolt pattern 5th wheel and didn't have enough hardware to mount my jerry can holder so those will be put on later.

Might want to trim that bumper a little more. In the pic it looks like the fender flare will rub the bumper. I have around a 1/2"-3/4" gap between the bumper and the cut bumper cover. I trimmed too close initially and just driving around town my bumper shows wear from rubbing.

That's definitely only my to do list. Shrockworks didn't provide any edge trim like I thought they would, so I'm going to try to find some then re-cut the bumper.

Dobinsons install, G2 tires and alignment

Finished installing a mild Dobinsons lift, added stock size Nitto Terra Grappler G2s and aligned within factory specs. Rides great! Some quick and dirty (dang birds!) after pics:

Opted out of my maintenance contract yesterday (before my first service). I've become much more obsessed with this truck than originally anticipated. I want everything done with care so I'm going to do everything myself.

I just couldn't bring myself to be okay with it. I was having nightmares of wheels being installed with half inch impacts and not so much as a tq stick to be seen. Or worse... half inch impact to install skid plate bolts. :faint2:
