South of Taos NM

Took my 6 day old 2018 Magnetic Gray up a jeep road south of Taos NM. Got pinstriping from branches, I'm thinking this color is bad for that? But I figure any 4Runner without pinstriping has never left the pavement Lol Not sure why the first pic is sideways, but this is the only place it is!

Got New Tires and 3" Lift!

I've had my 2015 SR5 for about 1 and a half years and FINALLY got to do something cool with it. I got a 3" RC lift and a set of 285/75R17/10 Toyo Open Country ATII tires. I think it looks pretty aggressive. Now it's time to hit some trails! While I'm here I might as well ask... is there any decent bull bars or brush guards out there for 5th gens? I really love the Shrok Works but I don't want to cut my body or have to change the springs to accomodate the extra weight... any suggestions?

Bull bars an brush guards can casue more damage to your truck in a heah on colission. Click the link in my sig to count me as a reference for the SSO slimline bumper.

You keep you factory style without the weight, light bar & winch ready and unlike the other options, its upgradeable to their stage 2 side protection pieces.

Looks good.

I haven't seen a 5th gen with a grille guard until two weeks ago when I was in Bend I saw 3 of them. They look good. Unfortunately they were all driving and I couldn't tell who they were made by.

After some research I believe they were either Aries or Westin. The Aries look more stylish and more like what was on the other rigs.

Here is a link to it: https://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/Toyota/4Runner/Aries/Grille_Guard/2017/TRD_Off-Road/6_Cyl_4-dot-0L/ARS2066.html

There is speculation that those can cause more damage. I've had on on my land rover and slid out on some ice when I lived in CO and slammed into a brick mailbox and didn't have a single piece of damage but sent the bricks 20 feet away.

Not saying others are wrong, thats just my experience with Grille Guards like this.

What springs are you running with those Bilstein 5100s? Looks like the perfect stance and sits well with all the weight. I'm on TRD Pro suspension right now with Toytec 2" spacer lift, and looking to change it up so I can handle more front end weight without sagging. Thanks!

I have the Dobinsons C59-314 springs in the front and the toytec superflex springs for the rear.

Took a quick two day camping trip to Moab. Ran Top of the World and Onion Creek/Thompson Canyon. This is my second time doing ToW. First time I didn't make it up to the top, mostly it was a nerves thing and probably afraid of banging the 4Runner around. I was also on a 1.75" lift and 265 KO2's. This time around armed with some knowledge of the trail, more off-road experience, and was not so afraid to scrape of the 4Runner. Oh the 2.5" lift and 285 AT3's didn't hurt either.

I got to the trail head around 11am and saw a group of about 10 Jeep Wranglers. They were on at least 37's. I politely lined up behind them and aired down. It was drizzling the entire time and what was slickrock before was now wet & slick. Was able to keep up with them up until the hard obstacles. I remembered the obstacle I couldn't get up the previous time and took a different approach/line this time around. 4Runner walked right up with some encouragement. I was amazed. Could have been the line, the tires, or the experience. I'm sure it was a combination of all. When I got to the top the Jeep guys said they were "impressed" and at least helped spot me for the photo op. Or else I'd be about 2000ft off that edge right now lol. You will scrape your 4Runner on this trail. Sliders are a must IMO and a front skid would be a plus. Mud flap, rear bumper, and hitch will drag some.

After completing ToW (about 5 hours total) I decided to run Onion Creek/Thompson Canyon back down into Moab. That's normally a green run but with the rain the past few days it made it really muddy. There was a switchback that I had to be extremely careful on and there was one downslope that had me sliding a bit. I took it slow for that stuff as I didn't want to slide down into a ditch or off the side of the cliff. The rain/mud certainly made it a lot more interesting and nerve racking than that trail should be.

I will say that I have supreme confidence in the Cooper AT3's XLT after this trip. This was the first real test and it did great rock crawling in wet conditions and for a mild AT did a good job in the mud. I've had them for 5k miles and they're quiet on the road, handle great, and balance well. Truly a great AT tire.

Either way it was a great trip and I don't have to kick myself in the pants for not completing ToW.

Yeah... I've been kind of leaning toward the southern style slim line bumper... if I have to cut, I have to cut! I want something functional for a wench some day. I can't find any bull bars that aren't all flimsy looking... kinda defeats the purpose right?

Haven't seen brushgaurds/ bull barrs for tge 4runner, but on explorers, you still have to cut the bumper.

Also, the SSO instructions are anoying. Mount the slimline first & bolt to center. Then put the bumpercover on. Way easier. Also, I did it by myself with out a floor jack... just muscled it on.
