What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

Hung a vial of radioactive Tritium encased in Titanium from my mirror. It glows blue and will for the next 25 years. It also added 20 horsepower!

Was just test fitting. Still thinking about a way to mount it.

Check out Bandi on this forum. He makes some really nice mounts for ARB comps that fit that area and has several versions for air tank or whatever.

His bracket alignments are dead on. He might be able to set you up.

...Springtime In The Rockies....

...Howdy, Folks!...:cowboy:

...My apologies!...an unexpected work-project came up...and these pics have piled up for several weeks now....

....Springtime here in SW Montana came late due to an extended Winter....so we are barely gettin into summer now.....but that means baby-pics!

...NO!..not mine...but my pics of other critter's babies!....:baby:

...1)...The 1st pic is an interesting historical story:

..."Construction work on the Montana Railroad began in 1895 at Lombard, a station on the Northern Pacific Railway 53 miles east of Helena"

...Some 60 or so miles south of Bozeman, there is a canyon named Lightning-Canyon, and about that time crews went back into it to clear-cut the timber to make ties for the tracks...They built a dam across the valley, remnants of it see on the left of the 1st pic...and flooded the valley behind it...

..They put the ties into the 'lake'...and then dynamited the dam, whereupon the water rushed into the rest of the valley all the way to the Gallatin River, where the ties floated all the way up to Bozeman...( That musta been a LOT of water?! )...:wow2:

...2)...The 2nd pic is from the Spanish-Peaks area....showing just how green everything still is with ALL the rain we have been having this year!...:rain:

...3)...Now, onto the baby-pics!....the 3rd shows one of the many, many buffalo calves born on Ted Turner's ranch...this one eyeing me from behind a fence...

...4)...The same calf....acting just like kids do anywhere when they know their photo is being taken?!...LOL!...

...5)...I managed to find a fox den near Quake-Lake...this was one of 3 kits playing around near their den....

...6)...Another kit standing guard doing sentry-duty at one of the entrances to the den...

...7)...A moose calf standing in a meadow, debating whether to eat some grass or go back to the milk-bar under it's mom?...:noidea:

...8)...Mama-Moose and calf trotting off to the river for a drink, and to cool down in the shade....

...Well, that's about it for now from here...sorry it took so long to post these!...Enjoy the outdoors in your 4Runners!.....Cheers!...

Tell that to the US military storing millions of rounds of 5.56 in fat 50's in the 120°F desert in the middle east for the last few years...they may need your help...

Military HumVees and other vehicles have to operate reliably in 120 deg F heat so we can agree that the temperatures under the hood will be even hotter than ambient air temps. A good range to look at is what automotive electronics have to withstand which is -40C to 85C. Underhood temps exceed that range so ECUs and other modules are typically placed in the passenger compartment. One source of information is from the SAE

From SAE J1211 Handbook for Robustness Validation of Automotive Electrical/Electronic Modules:

TABLE 1—RECOMMENDED TEMPERATURE EXTREMES

Underhood

Location Maximum Temperature

-- Dash Panel 140 °C ( 285 °F)
-- Engine (Typical) 150 °C ( 300 °F)
-- Choke Housing 205 °C ( 400 °F)
-- Starter Cable Near Manifold 205 °C ( 400 °F)
-- Exhaust Manifold 650 °C (1200 °F)

I can imagine the worst point is shutting the engine off in hot weather and there is a long heat soak before the compartment cools off. From a ammunition reloading company "As a rule of thumb, any temperature over that which is comfortable to a person is accelerating the decomposition of smokeless propellants."

I gave my 4Runner a good wash and then installed my 2 meter long African Outback roof rack.
It used to be on my 2005 4th Gen and has been stored in the garage for over a year.
I finally had a chance to buy new mounting rails to match the roof of the 5th gen. I worked with Paul
at Equipt Expedition Outfitters and purchased a set of rails and brackets made by Eezi-Awn for their K-9 racks.

Without anything mounted on it I can still get into the garage! :plane:

I apologize for the crap cell phone photos but I was running out of daylight while finishing up the installation. These are KC Hilites Gravity G4 LED fog lights (in amber natch). They’re DOT-approved and IP69 rated (that’s immersion and pressure washer rated).

This picture doesn’t do the beam pattern justice. I’ll try to get some video footage this week to show just how effective they are as auxiliary lights. I also need to fine tune the vertical adjustment of the beams.

One niggling thing is that I’m getting a little bit of light leakage between the lens of the lights and the black bezel. Suggestions for alleviating that are welcome.

Thanks will do.

I bet there's something I can tie into under the air filter box.

Your out of your mind if you think it only reaches 120° under the hood. Most vehicles have an operating temperature of 195° to 220°. Your input was much appreciated.

Super nice pictures!

Installed a sprint booster before camping with the fam - set it to green 9 and it's not only a very noticeable and pleasing difference in acceleration but makes driving in traffic with the trailer way easier and more responsive.

Also just bit the bullet and placed an order for a gobi stealth with no rise. Rola basket has been wonderful but the lack of a reasonable solution to mount bike/ski racks without constantly swapping the basket for them (or having a custom set of crossbars fabbed up to mount them to which would then make the whole contraption stand up like a foot off the roof of the truck) is killing me.

Really like the current aesthetic of my truck with the trail edition rack - makes it unique whereas I'll just be another bro with a gobi now, but the gobi functionality will be worthwhile for us so I'm pumped.

Very cool design. I like that idea to snug it up. Let us know how it turns out.
BTW, is it to be used as a cargo tie-down or as an “attic”-type net?

So the tiedown points are the seat bracket (on the c pillar that locks the seatback) a forward mounting bracket on the top of the c pillar, then the rear hook. So itll be a divider/attic(for pillows and coats and light stuff). Ill post better photos when its together.
