What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

- Manual hubs play better if you ever upgrade to a locker or limited slip in the front.

- The ADD system is still operational so I can lock the hubs and its like nothing is different.

- Kind of silly, but you can throw it in 4LO to get up steep driveways, parallel park on a slope, etc. without worrying about binding it up in 4WD (since you are in 2LO with the front hubs unlocked).

- In my opinion, Toyota trucks are just s'posed to have locking hubs!

Manual hub conversion is complete! A *huge* thanks to Timmy the Tool Man [MENTION=120071]mtbtim[/MENTION] for pressing bearings and installing the knuckles with me.

Where did you source your parts? This conversion can be done economically or can be really expensive depending on where you buy your parts. This is on my to-do list along with some spindle gussets, but unfortunately for me I don't live close to Tim!

I bought a set of Taco knuckles & CVs from Craigslist and a set from eBay -- I wanted to be sure I had enough pieces to get the project done. So now I actually have a complete set ready for another conversion that needs a home. The parts proved quite tricky to locate.

I also snagged a non-ADD differential tube but I'm not sure I will put it in. I still like having ADD, so I imagine this part will sit on the shelf for a while.

I left my ADD tube in and am going to add a switch to turn it off and on.

The Taco spindles aren't ABS, correct? So you just pressed the hubs into your 4Runner spindles and didn't use the Taco spindles?

Well my truck isn't ABS so I just used the non-ABS knuckles. If you wanted to retain ABS then yes, you could press out the manual hub and press it into your ABS-equipped knuckle. You'd need to get a spacer that talks to the Hall effect sensor but I have seen writeups on it, should not be hard to do.

Not really today, but my truck hit 180k yesterday.

Today I got the last part for my tire carrier addition on the rear bumper. I will be starting this next week probably. Been swamped with work and papers for school...

Installed a new radiator for the 2nd time. Put 100k on the first one which had started getting leaks.

I guess I'm starting round 2 of full maintenance.

Refinished the spoiler today. Had some horrible cracked old stickers on it from when I bought it that I just never did anything to clean up. Looks a million times better now!

Changed the manual tranny oil!!!! Been wanting to do it for a while but the plugs were stuck on. Managed to unstick them with the 10" breaker bar and only whacked my knuckles once. Shoulda worn thick gloves. I used the Amsoil 75w90 based on my research. We'll see if it shifts any better next time I take it out, I'll wait till the road dries off first. :dancin:

Last week I clayed and waxed one of the doors to test it out, that makes quite the difference. I spent a while getting all the crap off with the Mother's clay, then waxed with the Mother's Brazilian Carnauba wax. Now you can run your fingers on an unwaxed location and hear it and feel all the microscopic grit. But run your finger along a waxed section and you can't hear or feel a thing! That's what she said!!!
