What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

I decided to do the most important thing first, replaced the LBJ's. I just recently bought my 99 4x4 T4R w/236k miles. It looked like it had the original LBJ's so I decided to replace those first, especially since they were leaking grease and making some noise. I was going to wait a little until I was driving home from work the other day and came up on a Tacoma that was blocking all lanes due to a broken LBJ. I hit my local dealership on my way home and ordered them. So while I was under there replacing those I removed the running boards. I also installed a Cobra 19 CB radio where the ashtray was and a 5' Firestik antenna. What shall I do tomorrow...??

Where did you mount the antenna?

I mounted a 5' Firestik to the left corner of the rear bumper. I bought a Firestik mount with the connector and drilled some holes directly in the bumper and bolted it right up. I didn't have a problem drilling into the factory bumper since the mount almost covers up an existing dent in the chrome bumper. I removed the left rear tail light and ran the antenna cable up behind the tail light and through the rubber grommet for the tail light wiring harness. The antenna mount doesn't stick out too much and the rear hatch doesn't come close to hitting the antenna when opening/closing. I'll run it this way until I replace the bumpers. My only problem I have now is that I seem to be getting some excess static from the cb when the engine is running. It goes away as soon as I shut the engine off. I think I'll run a ground wire from the frame to the mount and see if that fixes it. We'll see...

in my younger and dumber days i almost had my bmw take me out, so nothing rests solely on the jack in my driveway. For my jack stands i put them up on some thick wood so they are closer to the frame and that has worked great. i put the front jack stands right in front of the crossmember on the frame. Cant remember where i put them in the rear, i know it was in front of the rear tires for sure though.

lol stock jack + bmw + sloped driveway = one big fail of you trying to hold your car up.

Just slammed a K&N high flow air filter in the airbox and disconnected the EFI relay for 30 mins for a reset.

What CB radio are you using. If it has an ANL setting then use it. It is use to remove engine noise.

Nope no ANL but you could get rid of a bit of static by adjusting your Squelch control. Also are you hard wired to the battery? If you can ground to the chassis close to the radio. It might help a bit. Have you tuned your antenna yet as well?

No, I was thinking about that earlier this morning. I wired it directly to the 12volt outlet just below the cb. I think I might be picking up most of the static due to that connection (I was in a hurry when I wired it up). I have a feeling a lot of the engine "noise" is being carried through the vehicle wiring harness and picked up by the cb. I will run the 12v+ directly to the battery and ground it somewhere on top of the trans tunnel. I was thinking I should run a seperate ground wire from the chassis to the antenna mount mainly because the mount is bolted directly to the chrome plated bumper. The chrome plating might possibly be giving me a poor ground. I haven't tuned the antenna yet either, to be quite honest, I really don't know how to tune an antenna. I was keeping my fingers crossed that it would "just work" after I installed it.

It very well made for the price. Wouldn't hesitate to throw anything up there. He is located in Florida.
