What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

you are alive????

maybe I am, or maybe I'm a figment of your imagination! Haven't actually shown my runner any love in a long while. I was too focused on my mountain bikes. Just now starting to get a lot of things done on the runner to keep it up in the best shape possible. New tires and wheels will be happening next month. Sadly no bigger than my 265's since its still my daily driver until I get a second car.

Talk about great service and products. Getting them mounted tomorrow.

Changed transmission fluid and filter. Mechanic thinks that the pan had never been off of the truck based on how tough it was to get the gasket off and how much metal was on the pan magnets. I've only owned it for a year and have no prior service records so who knows. Glad I got it done.

I let my 4runner have a nap....and while it was napping, I disconnected the front swaybar for some experiments. I also cleared the snow out of the driveway since 'take it for a spin in the morning' is next on the list followed by 'change the swaybar setup again' and I didn't want to pack the suspension full of snow getting out of the driveway.

For at least a year, the steering on my 4runner has been very "loose" feeling. It had a lack of response and was a lot worse off road. When I bought the truck, the boots on the steering rack weren't in the best condition. After awhile, I noticed that the rack was leaking from the inner TREs. I decided to replace the rack with a new one from Safari, LTD. I was very satisfied with the rack, but the steering was still not like factory new. I went on a search for what else could be wrong. I found that one of the fittings on the rack was leaking, so I tightened it properly and stopped the leaking. That helped some, but still not where it needed to be. The search continued to the internet.

I found this thread on TTORA that diagnosed steering play.

Today, I finally followed the instructions to fix the problem in the steering shaft that causes the play.

I was amazed at the difference that it made when I got behind the wheel tonight. I did not realize just how bad the play in my steering shaft had been. It is like a new truck now.

It's well worth the hour or so that it took to do the repair.

There are only 3 bolts and 2 springs that have to be removed once you get the column clam shell off. Don't fool with removing the kick panel and ignition. It's unnecessary. Of course, you do have to unplug 4 or 5 electronic plugs from under the steering wheel.

The three bolts are the two 6mm allen bolts that the tilt function pivots on (shown just below spring in pic above) and the 12mm bolt at the bottom of the steering shaft near the firewall (shown in pic below).

This is all you will remove.

This shows one of the tack welds (one on each side) that I had placed on the loose steering shaft joint. A local off road fab shop did it for free. I paid them by putting one of their stickers on my truck. Some people have drilled through the shaft and pressed in a roll pin instead of using tack welds.

Wednesday, I got a 5 piece package from my friendly neighborhood Fedex guy.

Included in this package were,

1 50" led light bar
1 30" led light bar
2 20" led light bars
18 3x3" 16 watt led cubes.

Sadly not everything is mine :( I do however get to give the 30" and 4 cubes as a present to my lovely 4runner. :)

installed a shrockworks winch bumper w/ single hoop, warn 9.5xp-s, and PIAA aux/fog lights.

Put a couple welds on the steering shaft.
ugamurph , thanks again. Just finished putting everything back together and took it for a test drive. Seems to track better, those springs were a pain to get hooked back up!

Yes they were. I used vise grips which seemed to help, but didn't make it easy.

I wish I had as much knowledge as you two (natemob & ugamurph). I have some serious play in my steering but there is no way I could do all that. Major props! All I did to mine was change the oil, it had been well over 5,000 mi.

Mounted and balanced yesterday. Needs some trimming and massaging...the things we sacrifice for love.

What did you do to your 3rd gen today?

I was just using regular pliers, I should have grabbed my vice grips!

You must have Superman grip! I don't think I would've been able to do that.

DizzyDoyle don't underestimate yourself. Before I bought my 4Runner, I did little more than change oil & spark plugs in my other vehicles. Since I bought it, I've installed a lift, re-booted CV axles, installed a new steering rack, installed a Shrockworks bumper, wired up and installed a winch, and much more. A lot of that with help from my good friend Fjatheart.
Basically all I have learned about mechanical work on the T4R has been from searching forums like this one, youtube and google. It's just a matter of taking your time and keeping up with where parts go for reassembly.

Thanks for the compliment, but with the right tools and help from the great folks on T4R, you can do the same.

I finished the front lift (Bilstein 5100 and Toytec coil) and put on the wheels and tires (265/75/R16 BFG All-Terrain and Tacoma 5 spoke wheels). Tires come dangerously close to hitting the upper control arm so I'm gonna swap the FN Wheels from my Tacoma to my 4Runner and see if the different backspacing will help clearance the upper control arm. I really don't want to have to buy a set of aftermarket upper control arms.

Got the coils in (FJ80 coils). This thing is gonna be tall! Rear Bilstein 5100's are on the way!
