Rust Rust Rust!!!

Driving me mad

Lately Ive been "trying" to treat all the rust on the 4runner as Im preparing for winter... Today I was removing the rear mud flaps to prep the chrome bumpers for paint; as I pulled off the flap I noticed a small amount of rust just underneath the rear flair at the back. Then, I started feeling underneath the flair where it is attached to the quarter panel - The entire unit started to come off.. the more I picked the more the fender flair pulled away until now, when I have only two screws somewhat holding the flair on.

I didnt have a bad day at work; my girlfriend got a baby sitter for the little one tonight and I dont work tomorrow... I should be in a good mood, But im not

I started putting new inner tie rods on, front brakes, tranny fluid and oil change. Did the front and rear diffs and t-case yesterday. Brake fluid and PS fluid and fuel filter last weekend. PCV. Timing belt and water pump next weekend. Basically a good 230,000 mile service. Lol. Maybe some tires before winter. Not sure yet. Still have a new lower valance and lift gate handle to put on. Forgot I steam cleaned the complete interior. I've been busy.

Certainly not to rub it in, but those of us fortunate to own rust free Runners should count our blessings daily. It sucks seeing beautiful vehicles that are not so lucky when there's a lot of miles left in the rest of the rig. Also looks like a real PITA to deal with so my hats off to you guys that take the time to do rust repair and keep your Runners on the road.

Wire wheeled and sanded the rust off my rear diff. Plus a new coat of paint.

Amen, I love my SW Desert 4Runner. Not a spot of rust on it.

Been looking for a decent set of these - where'd you source yours?

Ebay, all of my leds come from either ebay or amazon.
I couldn't justify a pair of $50 from Vleds which are the cheapest 7440 they have.

So far they are just what I wanted white, no blue at all and bright as hell, plus they are only $13.

Did nothing special, the 99's taillights were replaced with ones from an '02 so I stuck the 99's on the 96 because they were in better shape.

Took the back bumper off to fix a dent on it. I also did a chrome delete and repainted the step cover. I will have to do the front bumper next weekend.

You can still see where the dent is due to the plastic step cover till being bent, it's a whole lot better looking than it was before.

Been moving forward since my recent 10 steps back.. I guess any progress is just that, progress

Shrockworks rear bumper/tire carrier/jerry can mount

Saturday I picked up my Shrockworks rear bumper/tire carrier/jerry can holder from Shrockworks. This thing is really solid... heavier than I thought. I was able to unload my ARB bumper and carry it into my apartment by myself, but this was not possible with the rear bumper... I had to recruit some help from a neighbor. The bull bar on the ARB bumper does make that one easier to handle as well.

My plan was to drive to Houston (Tomball area) and be back in College Station early in the afternoon for ample tailgating. Texas A&M is opening Phase I of Kyle Field - we had 104,000 fans there Saturday. Anyway, I ran into some traffic on 249 and didn't start tailgating until almost 4:00.

I met Justin there and he helped me load the bumper into my 4Runner. That is his 4Runner on the lift. My bumper has a new piece that allows 2 jerry cans holders to be attached side by side instead of just one (but you can mount them either way). I like pleasant surprises like this, but I'm not sure which way I am going to go on this.

My bumper was built to allow for a 1" body lift. I am also going to paint both bumpers and all of the Limited trim/flares Millennium Silver. You can see in two of the pics how close this color is to the machined areas of the bumper - the can is painted Millennium Silver. That is what I want - a paint color close to the color of steel with a metallic flake to match the metallic effect of my Stellar Blue.

This photo shows the swinging tire and jerry can holder arm sitting where it will be installed.

My rear bumper will look similar to these except that it will be silver in color. I'm also going to have some type of license plate holder/light mounted. I want to use the one for the Hilux Surf, but I have not been able to find one yet.

Does anyone have a photo of this bumper with two jerry cans mounted side by side? I've seen this on other bumpers, but not on the Shrockworks bumper.

I installed new rear Moog springs and rear KYB MONOMAX shocks. I also installed new KYB MONOMAX front shocks on the original springs. I ended up with a noticeable rake. I'm going to let it settle and then see if I need to install some front spacers to bring the front up. The new rear springs left the rear end about 2" higher than before. The front stayed the same.
