Wow! I hope the damage isn't too bad. Just today I got my LBJ replaced at the dealership as part of the recall for 01-02 models. Apparently the previous owner had never had it done.

That's a tie rod end there champ. You can almost see the lbj though. Probably wouldn't hurt to replace the tie rod also.

I've thought about it, but I'm not one to stalk Craigslist looking for a somewhat rare part for $1,000+, rebuild it$, and then assess whether the added 50-70 hp/tq was the silver bullet.. on an engine/transmission/vehicle with 255k. A new SC would be cool, but it'd still be on a beat vehicle.. and even more costly.

Also.. I had a thought today. I killed some time and got my tires rotated and balanced this afternoon because my steering wheel had been shaky for a good long while, despite brand new inner and outer tie rods on both sides, rack guide, and new everything else in the last ~10k since I bought it. The R+B didn't change anything, and it happens most at 55-65mph... the magic towing speed.

I guess what I'm trying to say with that, is that a vehicle that gets thrown around on rocks every weekend might not make for the soundest and most stable/safe tow vehicle. Cheap domestic 8cyl trucks are plentiful, wouldn't run themselves ragged trying to get me somewhere, and for my purposes would see less than 5k a year, same as my 4runner. Oh yea.. premium fuel, ne'er again

That's a tie rod end there champ. You can almost see the lbj though. Probably wouldn't hurt to replace the tie rod also.

I'm hoping to go through the suspension soon. A lot of items are probably long overdue at this point. I just recently bought the 4Runner and took it to the dealership since they had a coupon for oil changes. They said there was an open recall so I just had them complete that for free.

what I did today!

Purchased a 1999 2wd Limited with 180,000 on her. So excited to start cleaning her up. Today I locked the battery down, replaced wiper blades. Goes to Toyota tomorrow for a once over and fluid change. The TO DO list so far...

1. shift selector handle replacement. It comes of and the O/D has been disconnected.

2. The fog and front running lights do not work and needs to be investigated. Hoping for bulbs but it seems strange that the whole front lighting system does not come on.

3. Remount the Hazard light switch as well as the unit that holds the rear window button. They both push back into the dash

4.Get rid of the feet smell!!! :toilet3:

I havent done anything per se, but I did go to my local island stealership (which not only steals your money but never has the parts you need....ever), and I saw this in the parking lot.

This is literally the nicest looking 4runner on this entire island. I can count on 1 hand how many 4runners I've actually seen here and this is by far the best looking one. No rust holes visible, no dents, Original windows and its a limited :naughty:

They were not OEM. The PO had replaced them around 140,000-160,000, I'd have to check the receipts for the exact mileage. But to save some money they went with cheapo China parts that were $20 a piece. I knew I was going to have to replace them so luckily I had already bought that parts and had them at my house. The ironic part was I was planning on doing them the morning after they failed:smow: the big man upstairs was watching out for me because 15 minutes before they failed I was doing 70 on the highway, they failed in a neighbor hood at 15 and 100 yards from my girlfriends house.

The biggest thing I'd say to help others is DONT WAIT TO REPLACE THEM! They're not that expensive, I bought OEM Toyota parts off Amazon and it was only slightly over $100. That's pretty cheap given the consequences if they fail. It's a relatively easy job too. I did it on the side of the road with normal hand tools and it only took a few hours. The longest part was trying to track down an upper balljoint because it got pulled out if its socket. I could've been seriously hurt if this had happened on any other road. When it failed it cut my brake lines and abs wiring. Only use OEM parts and do it sooner rather than later. If you put it off like me you'll have to replace outter tie rods, lbj, ubj, tires, brake lines, abs wiring, and a cv shaft.

Various reasons. Lots of gravel roads, hurricanes do a pretty number on everything, and the locals bust in the windows to steal stuff....This is why we cant have nice things. :sobbing:

Damage wasn't terrible but it was more than I wanted it to be! Ha. Good for you, better get them changed before something bad happens. You have a good looking truck, wouldn't want anything to happen to it! Those tie rod ends look like they need some love, mine are shot. I just got new ones and waiting to put them on.

Have you checked your cvs? I know my cvs are bad and they cause shaking of the steering wheel at the same speeds.
