Went to my local Toyota stealerrship to get a quick oil change because I didn't have time to get to it myself for the first time in about 40k miles. Service writer jumps in my truck and starts to jaw drop stare at all the mods to the interior. Asks about what else is modded mechanically and after the run down (dual batteries, Tundra brakes, Highlander springs, ect) he says the service takes about an hour then takes my truck to the back. No problem. After about an hour and 30 minutes in the waiting room i go back out to the guy and say politely, " i really have to get my daughter from daycare wheres my ride"? Just then it pulled up outside. As I am cashing out I fearfully ask the guy what took so long, did they find any issues? He says, "not at all. Actually I won't lie, all the techs and I wanted to look at your truck to see everything you had done to it and lost track of time". As a sense of pride washed over me and I told the guy it was cool, I walked out of the garage bay and see 2 more employees pointing and talking about my truck again. RAD
cleaned my lower intake manifold.
Mine were like that too. Ended up taking a torch and stud puller to them, ran a tap through the holes, and replaced them with bolts.I took my downstream 02 sensor off after fighting with a rusted bolt.
Anyhow, what would you guys do here before putting the new one on? Wire brush and POR15? Obviously I can only try to prevent this cancer further.
I'm not in the rust belt either (Denver truck all its life), I wonder why some areas are so much more prone to rust than others. Thankfully it's not the frame, that I can see at least.

How did you get it so clean? I have my valve covers off and scrubbed the crap out of them with degreaser and they look nowhere near that clean.

That thing is so clean it almost hurts to look at. Parts washer? All I want to know is how is there still what looks to be the entire stinky plastic wiring cover? How is that even possible?

you replaced only one side ?Replaced the left ball joint with around 68,000 miles. Just puking a lot of grease, no symptoms, so for peace of mind. Also replaced the bolts for the same reason.
Replaced the front billies too- they had around 90,000 miles on them.
Most of that stuff isn't rust, it's dirt from a couple of my favorite states!

All I can say is that 30% of it is black electrical tape and the other 30 percent fell apart when I attempted to re-attach it. I was just going to ask if someone sells an aftermarket wiring harness holder.

I'm one of those guys with not a lot of time on my hands.....but if I have a issue with one thing I fix them both.....meaning....one ball joint going out, do them both....one shock weak...do them both...one caliper .....yadda yadda
I'm one of those girls with more time (sorta) than money so depending on what it is is how it gets fixed. Agree with you, shocks, pair, that makes sense. Calipers I did as a set because Tundra upgrade. Brake pads, yep. Light bulbs, no. We could go on and on. My kid tells me I'm good at that....
I'd replaced the right ball joint sorta unexpectedly soon (oem joint, replaced at 48,000ish miles) and the left was good AND it's not like I am going to save time or money on this particular job anyway. Now I've done the other. I can say LBJs get replaced nearly at the slightest sign of trouble, prolly a bit preemptively.
Ball joint, lower left, replaced at 218,000 miles and 286,415 miles
Ball joint, lower right, replaced at 230,000 miles and 278,346 miles
New bolts too.
