A little project to finally solve the issue of flying a flag behind the 4R. Not sure why the second to last pic is sideways...

You can see where I had drilled two holes where the tie-down hooks are. Then I drilled another smaller hole where I can run a pin into the wood and through the hook to keep it from bouncing around.

1in hole in the front to hold the pole and Im done!

I have only posted here a couple times before, but figured I would share what I have been up to lately with my T4R Ltd and limited funds.

Back in April i was involved in a crash (not my fault) that flipped my 1999 T4R LTD and threw me and it up onto a sidewalk, totaling my baby!

A month later insurance bought me a 2000 Limited. Best I could find in a city of junk.

Since buying the truck, I made a few upgrades to make it mine. Day one, I replaced the windshield and added limo tint all the way around. Day two, replaced interior and corner lights with LED.

A couple weeks go by and I decided I wanted to upgrade the overall look and make it look a bit more tactical, so I looked online and found the plasti dip stuff. I tried it out on the center caps and it looked good.

Decided I wanted to do more painting. Now the way I figure it, I'm not looking to ever sell my 4Runner so customizing it to my liking was no longer an issue. Although I like the plasti dip stuff, for long term it wasn't going to hold up.

Then it came to me...like a beacon on a foggy road: Spray Truck bed liner!!! Cheap to buy ($6/can), easy to apply and it will put a rugged textured surface to my truck and look awesome. So I began the masking of the entire truck and three hours later I had an almost unrecognizable truck from what I had before.

Now the lady I bought the truck from had 245 70/16's on it which looked like roller skate wheels. They had holes that some genius plugged with a home made plug kit so they lost air every two weeks. TODAY, I went to Discount Tires and after looking at all of my options (ones in my price range), I decided on Pathfinder Sport A/T's. Somewhat aggressive tread, 60K warranty blah blah blah...and most importantly the right size for my truck. Got the tires out the door for $670, alignment was $318 because I needed new outer tie rods and boom...my truck is almost where I want it.

Next upgrades will be lights and a stereo to jam my music!

Took off the front bumper so I can install my transmission cooler. So much rust lol. I let liquid wrench settle on them for a bit and then used a small impact gun to remove the bolts. It only worked on a few of them though so I whipped out the acetylene torch.... Still broke 2 bolts!

Went to my local Toyota stealerrship to get a quick oil change because I didn't have time to get to it myself for the first time in about 40k miles. Service writer jumps in my truck and starts to jaw drop stare at all the mods to the interior. Asks about what else is modded mechanically and after the run down (dual batteries, Tundra brakes, Highlander springs, ect) he says the service takes about an hour then takes my truck to the back. No problem. After about an hour and 30 minutes in the waiting room i go back out to the guy and say politely, " i really have to get my daughter from daycare wheres my ride"? Just then it pulled up outside. As I am cashing out I fearfully ask the guy what took so long, did they find any issues? He says, "not at all. Actually I won't lie, all the techs and I wanted to look at your truck to see everything you had done to it and lost track of time". As a sense of pride washed over me and I told the guy it was cool, I walked out of the garage bay and see 2 more employees pointing and talking about my truck again. RAD

Replaced the left ball joint with around 68,000 miles. Just puking a lot of grease, no symptoms, so for peace of mind. Also replaced the bolts for the same reason.

Replaced the front billies too- they had around 90,000 miles on them.

Most of that stuff isn't rust, it's dirt from a couple of my favorite states!

Did your A/C vents and Push start button come from a FORD by any chance?

I took my downstream 02 sensor off after fighting with a rusted bolt.

Anyhow, what would you guys do here before putting the new one on? Wire brush and POR15? Obviously I can only try to prevent this cancer further.

I'm not in the rust belt either (Denver truck all its life), I wonder why some areas are so much more prone to rust than others. Thankfully it's not the frame, that I can see at least.

Mine were like that too. Ended up taking a torch and stud puller to them, ran a tap through the holes, and replaced them with bolts.

How did you get it so clean? I have my valve covers off and scrubbed the crap out of them with degreaser and they look nowhere near that clean.

That thing is so clean it almost hurts to look at. Parts washer? All I want to know is how is there still what looks to be the entire stinky plastic wiring cover? How is that even possible?

My valve covers still look like trash. I have no idea how to get those things clean. I got the lower intake clean by spraying about a 1/4 can of Gunk Engine Degreaser on it, then waited the prescribed 15 minutes scrubbed with a stiff bristle brush, then washed off with the garden hose.

After that I spot sprayed with the green can of brakekleen and brushed a little more.

I had to do something while I waited for 1 lower intake gasket to arrive. I thought I had 2, but could only find 1 in the garage. :(

All I can say is that 30% of it is black electrical tape and the other 30 percent fell apart when I attempted to re-attach it. I was just going to ask if someone sells an aftermarket wiring harness holder.

Oem lower ball joints. Took less than 1hr, Easy job. Original ball joints had no play or rips in boot still packed with oem grease but with 155,000 miles and recent 3" lift wasn't taking any chances.

you replaced only one side ?
I'm one of those guys with not a lot of time on my hands.....but if I have a issue with one thing I fix them both.....meaning....one ball joint going out, do them both....one shock weak...do them both...one caliper .....yadda yadda

After unsuccessfully looking for that very thing after finding out how much Toyota wants for a new one (!, but comes as a harness) I used rescue tape, inspired by Rock_Rat 's experience. Seems to be holding up so far, the part that can be seen, at least. Not a ton of miles on it yet so not able to say yay or nay.

I'm one of those girls with more time (sorta) than money so depending on what it is is how it gets fixed. Agree with you, shocks, pair, that makes sense. Calipers I did as a set because Tundra upgrade. Brake pads, yep. Light bulbs, no. We could go on and on. My kid tells me I'm good at that....

I'd replaced the right ball joint sorta unexpectedly soon (oem joint, replaced at 48,000ish miles) and the left was good AND it's not like I am going to save time or money on this particular job anyway. Now I've done the other. I can say LBJs get replaced nearly at the slightest sign of trouble, prolly a bit preemptively. :)

Ball joint, lower left, replaced at 218,000 miles and 286,415 miles
Ball joint, lower right, replaced at 230,000 miles and 278,346 miles
New bolts too.
