What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

I was crossing the street today and heard a familiar sound. A vehicle was approaching me while I had my back turned to the street.
I said to myself, "That sounds just like 5VZ-FE engine with a seized fan clutch". I turned around to see a late 90s Tacoma driving by with that classic seized fan clutch roar.

I've been spoiled by my Volvo - won't let you lock it if the key is in the ignition and the ignition is off. But today was just carelessness. Wife has the spare key and typically we work within a mile of each other... but today she was on PTO for a sight-related issue that meant she was 30 miles away and couldn't drive the spare down to unlock me.

Plus I had to pick up our son before 6pm today, so no time to experiment in the work parking lot with a hammer, a door stop and a coat hanger after closing. Had to call pop-a-lock ( [MENTION=99383]amalik[/MENTION] ) as not one, not two, but THREE calls to AAA netted ZERO doors of my 4Runner being unlocked (all of them no-showed).

At 4:15pm I was getting desperate (had to leave at 5pm to make it to the day care before 6 with some cushion for traffic), called the pop-a-lock folks, they were there in 10 minutes, had the thing unlocked in 30 sec. Yeah it cost $30 but it's better than my son's day care calling the cops on us for no-showing before the mandatory 6pm cutoff (they're serious about that stuff up here).

The icing? I got a call from the AAA contracted lock person at 5:30 saying they were 45 minutes out.

tangent... how much is AAA on average? I've been considering something like that.

I have a fleet of shitboxes and regularly travel by vehicle ~200+ miles from home so I went with AAA Premier via AutoClub Missouri, which is ~$110/yr.

Hagerty insurance covers tows for my 240z, and we're still within the free tow/roadside warranty on the 2016 4Runner, but for all the other cars... AAA.

I daily my 4Runner. But on weekends I take the Volvo out to run errands and whatnot (plus, it has studded snow tires and great rust proofing, so I use it in the winter as a daily). And it feels like I'm driving a sports car. And the seats... man the seats. Most comfortable seats ever in a production car for long distance drives.

Today I get it inspected. At about 144k miles. Love it more every day.

Send your receipt to AAA. They should reimburse. I had a weird situation where my car was well off the road, but the cops called HIS tow company and i was 170$ lighter, and drove my damaged rig from the shop. So ashamed i forgot to get the receipt at the time, but called back the next day and had one faxed to AAA. A couple weeks later, i had a check from AAA, just saying.

Ive just been driving the crap outta my runner.

This is a pretty good idea. It's quite unlikely to lock both wallet AND keys in your truck.

I have a fleet of shitheaps that I drive regularly. That's a lot of keys in one wallet. I was thinking more of the hide-a-key magnetized box(es) some others have mentioned.

Though... I've done this once in 20 years of driving. I think I'll be OK. haha.

Whatever you do, make sure you say exactly where you put the hide-a-key, as well as have detailed threads as with pictures that very clearly allow one to tell your 4runner apart from others, and while you're at it, make sure your location is up to date for your profile...
