What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Weather is nice, so there's a little bit of delayed maintenance to catch up.

2 weekends ago it was the clutch. The release point was down low in the pedal travel, and felt funny. Pump it and the release point would rise up. I figured it was the rubber seal on the clutch fork forcing the slave cylinder more open than it needed to be. Plus the clutch would shudder and squeal occasionally. At 213K miles, it was probably due.

1" body lift makes this a bit easier than it would be otherwise. Only thing of note when taking it apart was that it really looked like the trans had been out before. I had assumed it still was on the original clutch when I bought it at 155K miles. But there was *LOTS* of loctite/thread locker on the flywheel bolts. Really gooped up with some sort of tan stuff. Nothing the factory would have done, so much that it was oozed out around the bolt heads as well.

Had the flywheel resurfaced, slapped it all back together with the Marlin Crawler 1200# clutch kit, kudos to the nice cheap Harbor Fright trans jack for making it pretty easy to slip the trans back into place. Truck drives great, clutch action is normal again, pedal feel is still pretty much the same weight, not heavier as I was expecting.

Yesterday's task: The valve covers. At about 180 - 185K miles they had started leaking badly, but all I did at that point was *gently* retighten all the accessible valve cover bolts. This reduced the oil leakage to a bare minimum and it's been fine for ~30K miles since. But they've started to ooze again, you get the occasional 'hot oil' smell, time to just take care of it. My awesome wife had done this task on her '96 last fall, and ordered two sets of all the gaskets, so it was just a matter of getting it done.

Intake, TB, upper and lower plenums came off, and got the passenger side VC done. Replaced the rubber rimmed steel plug on the back side, took those two half-moon plus out, cleaned, resealed them, replaced the 3 spark plug tube seals (those were absolutely brittle and cracked immediately), new gasket and 8 rubber bolt washers.

Then, it seems like we were two short on the sparkplug tube seals. Misplaced in the months since she did hers? Progress stopped until the local Toyota dealer can get us a few more parts. She also noted that the date code on the sparkplug wires was 2003, probably not a bad idea to replace those while they're out.

Did drain and refill of trans fluid and front diff, installed power antenna switch and CB with 3' Firestik. Also installed a PA behind the front bumper that works off the CB. Go figure my kids love it.

Now that all of the maintenance is caught up I can focus on more fun stuff. Lift, tires and roof rack are next.

Got some love for taking them off, so I fully expect the opposite effect for putting them back on.. at least they look new again after a fresh bumper coat on the steps.

Also, just got a can of "Back to Black" from the Chemical Guys that I'm gonna try out on the door/window trim. If it works like it says it will save hours off masking/spraying everything with bumper black. Fingers crossed!

They are indeed! I went with the ones meant for the 4Runner. I spoke with an Icon rep since I was concerned about that as well, but they assured me that the website was incorrect and the are meant for 0-3" of lift. Hopefully that is true!

When I spoke to Icon a few weeks ago they said the same thing. I am slightly concerned that they haven't corrected it and I wonder why. I have a few thoughts on it but I keep to myself..haha

today trying to figure out what these brackets are, (circled)
exhaust and t-case brackets.jpg

I can't for the life of me understand what would use a bracket off the exhaust to hold anything up, especially with rubber

T-case is a little more understandable but I guess im missing the skid plate that mounts here, but again the rubber seems to be wrong.t-case bracket.jpg

Halla for keywords for me to search up

New FPR, new injector O-rings to stop the fuel leak I'm getting under boost. Also putting hose clamps on all the vacuum+boost lines while the blower is off.

O-ring+seal kits I got off Amazon, about $6/each kit. Comes with all four o-ring/seals for 1 injector. I lubed them all up with sil-glyde before installing them onto the injectors

My original ones were seriously dried out.

Couldn't locate exact source of leak, old valve cover leak left my lower intake pretty funky to pinpoint fuel stains.

Well, time to put 'er back together and cross my fingers.

FYI worked like a charm and I gained about .4 psi!?!! I suspect the blower-manifold gasket was leaking some pressure. I had reused the factory original "looks ok" gasket. When I removed it, could see wet all the way to edges of most of the gasket-not a good sign. Replaced it with a fel-pro and now boost gauge is reading almost a half pound higher. Yay for unexpected improvements!

Was trying to get it ready for a road trip tomorrow. Nope the GM product crapped out another water pump. So I installed pump #5, and you notice the Alternator is pretty clean. Yep, that one is #4 and just two of MANY examples of why I am so done with GM products!!
