Unlifted

What is the opposite of 'to lift the truck'? Lowered I guess.

I took off my 99 tall front springs that have been rattling my dash and teeth for the last couple of years and installed a used set of 2004 Tacoma Offroad progressive springs instead.

First impression is 1" lower in the front which I am good with, the CV angles look better now. Still 1.5" taller than the stock suspension I removed 3-4 years ago. And ride is noticeably better. Smoother over the holey gravel of our road. Used to make me cringe. I think 99 talls are too heavy for a 3rz base model with 15" steelies.

So far happy. Will now remove the rear cone bumpstops from inside the 2906s for hopefully 3/8" reduction in the rear. My 96 didn't have them originally anyhow.

Will post height changes for FYI when completed.

Installed a 3" Toytec Eibach lift, SPC UCAs, and a Toytec adjustable panhard bar. Then I took it to the tire shop to get it aligned and to install new tires, and they can't align it because it's "too tall," so now I have a 4Runner I can't really drive until I can find a tire shop that can align a lifted vehicle.

:redbrick:

Thanks! It's the Addicted Offroad Plate front bumper. Came up used for a killer deal so I had to buy it. Now I'll have to fill it with a winch sometime.

Thank you for your answer. It rocks, and good idea to add a winch! I need to get to that eventually, but I need a bumper first!

I got all of this for $39 at a pick and pull. I'll be replacing my cracked air box, installing the stock roof rack cross bars and doing the 99+ center console cup holder mod (with e-brake) once I get it cleaned up.

I feel like I got a pretty damn good deal for all of the parts.

Looking forward to having actual normal cup holders.

Packed it for a 6,000+ mile trip from PA to Colorado for my S212 Chainsaw Certification Course and then onwards up to Grand Teton National Park for the solar eclipse and adventure time!

Wish me luck, hopefully the truck runs like I think it will!

Yeah I'm gonna be in Oregon for the total eclipse!!!

Swapped rear axles. Amazingly all the bolts were easy to take off, and the lower shock mount too. Took me all day but I got the old one off and the new one on.

The only real pain was the brake lines, I got a crows foot 10 mm wrench from the local auto store which was pretty useless cause it was more like 10.5 mm, it rounded off some flare nuts. So I had to mix and match brake lines between the two axles depending on what I could take off. Luckily I could make a complete brake line set. Lost a lot of brake fluid to the lawn...

And also, why did the brainiacs at Toyota decide to put the ABS plug in the upper shock mount well, the most inaccessible place under the whole car?????

Tomorrow I'll bleed the brakes, change the diff fluid (there was only a small amount of goopy red stuff in it), adjust the brakes and tighten up all the bolts.

The old diff is def. bad, you can hear it grind when you turn it by hand.

The shocks are still good after 275,000 km.

Thick goop, about 1/4 of what should have been in there. Probably never changed.

"New" axle in!!!

I really hope there are no problems with it. It seems good except for the goop that I drained from the diff.

Maintenance day

Was long over due too , these Denso's went 159,000 Km's :becky:

If it doesn't rain today , new AC , Power steering and Alt belts and the running boards will come off today

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who works in the grass. The blacktop in the driveway kills my bones. I have an old moving blanket that I throw down to keep the bug bites, dirt & moisture to a minimum. I'm in shorts & tank top this time of year. I used to throw down a tarp but it moves around to easily from sneakers & wind.

You're gonna regret not sanding & painting that new axle but I know you're in a rush to make your trip. Nice job!

On Fri I brought these to the Trans/Diff shop. My 4.56 getting swapped into the new e-locker carrier. Getting new Koyo seals & bearings too. Might as well while it's all apart.

You got yourself a 5Runner!

More pics please - there's someone around here who chopped his 2nd gen but I've never seen a 3rd gen done before.

It actually went together pretty well. I even got to use the roof section I cut off to make a sunroof delete patch.

Finally got around to installing the Tundra brake upgrade which made a world of difference compared to the old setup.

Some said the difference isn't noticeable but the old stuff had a severe pulse and an odd dead zone at the top of the pedal before it'd bite harder than expected. Made it very difficult to stop smoothly but oddly enough the pads had at least 50% life left.

Flushed my cooling system today.

Coolant looked ok still (only 1.5 years old) but inside the radiator was kind of sludgy.

I drained it filled back up with water and a flushing additive (gunk brand I think). It took me about 4 times for the fluid to come out really clear, it definitely needed a good flush.

I also installed a new thermostat (OEM) and gasket. Some previous owner put in some rando auto parts thermostat in it, it looked like a total POS compared to the OEM one. Jiggle valve was like in the 9 Oclock position? I installed the new thermostat with jiggle valve at 6 Oclock per FSM. Toyota red coolant diluted to 50/50 with distilled water.

Everything went well and temps not only seem to be lower but much more stable.

Ripped out the factory remote start system. Not sure which toyota tech installed it but he he managed to use every wire tap they must have had.

Changed out the 3 transmission solenoids and both front away bar links. Hardest part about the solenoids was dropping and re installing that damn tranny pan!

Installed new Bilstein shocks from ToyTec for my Ultimate lift. They are not standard 5100s since they direct thread the coil over lower adjustments on them. Also replaced my original bump stops with Wheeler's Offroad stops. They are a bit shorter so I am going to do some travel checks and see if I need to put in a spacer for them.

Next up will be putting on my RTT and loading fridge to adjust my coils to a little less than level before getting an alignment on Tuesday.
