Changed out both O2 sensors on my '99 Federal. Thanks to this 4x4Wire - Tech: Time to Replace the O2 Sensor on your 3rd Gen Toyota? how-to it was easy enough. Rear O2 sensor was actually more stubborn thanks to a heavily rusted 12mm nut that rounded itself in a single twist, but some WD-40 working on it while I made a pizza was enough to make it reconsider after a strong precision love tap with a hammer and screwdriver (nice solid length steel core flat screwdriver to transfer the good vibes). Here's a picture of the old and new forward/upstream O2 sensor - might just be the factory original?

Good job, those nuts are a pain. I replaced mine with stainless steel from Ace. Stupid rust.

Nice! I just did the same thing to my 2001 4Runner today as well (minus the rust 'fun').

however I yanked the threaded bodies, (what are those thingys called???), out and just went with stainless bolts of the same pitch and some lock washers

Did quite a bit today! Rotated and road force balanced my tires (highway vibrations still present but noticeably better) as well as went to the junkyard. At the junkyard I purchased an entire sunroof assembly for mine that will (hopefully) actually work as well as the correct wood grain "match" for the instrument cluster bezel with a new rheostat that I blew a while ago in mine. I also got one of those temp windshield mounted rear view mirrors off a 00' limited.

The old bezel I had was on the left in the pic and was too dark and didn't match the rest of my wood grain set (ignition, radio bezel and shifter).

why the change? were you chasing a code?

Nice! I just did the same thing to my 2001 4Runner today as well (minus the rust 'fun').

I'm chasing a damn code. That pesky P0171 code is driving me nuts

I'd previously thrown a P0133 code and cleared it after cleaning out the MAF sensor, so there's that. My mpg's have also taken a turn for the worse in the last couple months (like comically bad - 12'ish overall) and this is the only obvious culprit. Sure looks to be the original sensors that I pulled; if so they lasted more than 280,000 miles so I can't complain too much. No new codes so far and it seems to idle more smoothly now. Hoping for a couple mpg gain.

I would be interested to see if you gain back your MPGs without changing anything else. I think my o2 sensors are both factory after looking at them a few days ago. I got a p0420 when I first got my 4runner and it cleared itself and never came back. It has been 9,000 miles since so.. I'm off the hook for now. BTW, I saw the biggest jump in MPG after I changed my plugs.

I don't have any experience with that.. it looks like a potentially headache filled troubleshooting.

Your mpg changed after cleaning the MAF sensor? I’d be happy if I got better than 12 mpg lol. Then again, it’s a tank so it explains a lot. I am always skeptical about the whole cleaning MAF. Feel like most people have issues. :witch:
