What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

We had freezing rain last night so the old girl is almost an 1" deep in ice this morning. Took me a few minutes to get access through the rear lift gate so I could start her up and let the dethawing process begin. Of course this is the day the temp. controls refuse to cooperate and only wants to select "cold"... thanks Toyota. Took way too long jiggling/threatening/pleading with the damn controls to please pick a number above 70. Anyone else have this issue?

Not sure, but I figure while I'm in there taking it all apart - I might as well do it all and not have to go back. My luck the one part I decide to skip will be the one that causes my issues.

My truck has 240k on it, so everything I'm changing is well worn. Piece of mind for me...

I bought the OEM LBJ's, guess it does make sense to buy the rest also.

Commence part number search.

I smother those pins in antiseize and they dont give me any problems. A little encouragement from a hammer and punch/screwdriver/needle nose pliers is needed on occasion.

Did this. Got the plate from marcus clarkus

OK, just wanted to check - tires fixed my death wobble :). Did you have them road force balanced?

No, but I really don't think it's the tires. I have all sorts of clunking in the front end and when I was under the truck doing the transmission flush it was obvious that some of the bushings are just toast.

A road balance will be my next step if this doesn't clean things up.

been driving in snow for the past few weeks and the 4wd on all the time, had to run to sisters (Oregon) for groceries and got to dry pavement,
sure wish I had my 4wd working on the fly, still wont disengage without coming to a stop and backing up.
yes I exercise it often, yes its got new synthetic fluid up front ( two months ago)
didn't stop shifting off on the fly till this year. does shift in on the fly no problem.

but today I'm headed to some nice back forest service roads, about 1-2 feet of snow, gonna exercise my elocker and do some snow shoeing

Replaced the battery yesterday. Taking a break from working on the tailgate latch, key cylinder, and license plate lights.

The mounting ears for the cylinder broke a few months ago, going to build them up with "steel stick" epoxy putty. Same thing with the license plate lights.

Has anyone actually fully taken apart the latch assembly? It appears there's plastic or other debris stuck inside it, not sure yet if I'll be able to fish it out. The two halves of the latch are held together with what's basically two huge rivets, if I grind the heads off I should be able to pop the rivets off then split the latch apart. Then I'll stop by my buddy's shop afterwards and see if I can remember how to TIG weld LOL

Installed Sonoran Steel Washer Relocation Kit and Rear Parking Brake Cable Bracket. My oem washer was beat to shit so did an upgrade. You'll never know when you decide to go bigger tires.

Today was a good day

started off with replacing the old worn vinyl on the console door, easy as pie, and I added a little design touch to the back...(the color match isnt perfect, but the vinyl material was free from a local upholstry shop so I wasnt complaining, and its close enough for me not to care)

next was removing the old e-brake handle, and installing the "new" one. as the new handle has the extended bracket to position it perfectly. "B" is the where the original bracket bent upward, "C" is where the late model bracket bends upwards...

The first issue that I found was the little metal tab that holds the cable in place was protruding too far and would hit the floor (see pic), so I cut the end off, and it fits like a glove. (second pic shows how much to cut)

next was the console bracket. the late model is much shorter as seen in the picture, but I had to make it even shorter! the distance between "A" to "B" is about how far I had to hammer and bend the bracket back in order for the console to line up with the bolt holes, (about 3/8"), apply the big ass wrench, and its there!

the second issue i found was that by bending the console bracket back the rear heater control bracket would be in the way, simple cut and its like a glove...

with that out of the way, the fitment was perfect. but I wasnt done there! I needed a place to put my rear window UP/DN switch, and my EDC switch. so naturally I canibalized my '96 center console switch plates and made my own!

cut out the usable switch plates (leaving enough material to play with...

remove as much material as possible between them, so they can fit side by side within the cubby hole of the late model console...and JB weld together

once dry, JB weld into the cubby hole (I didnt leave enough material on the outer edges to fill all gaps, I used more JB weld!!

and finally install your switches, fill the empty switch holes with the blanks and isntall the console! DONE.

Yes. I found if you touch it before the engine warms up it will only go down. Like it knows it can't reach that temp and says nope.

I set it on 75 usually but whatever it's at don't touch nothing. On cold mornings, when the engine reaches temp it starts to blow warm air.

Installed the anti-rattle clips that I forgot yesterday. ( no idea how I brain farted on that ) and since it was a beautiful day 84° and sunny with 4 days of colder rain headed in I decided to knock off a few more items from the maintenance list. Rear diffy and T-case juice got changed. Rear diffy holds 2.7-ish qts, I drained about 1.75 out of it and it didn't look like it was too old. Who knows, maybe someone was a qt short of finishing the job the last time. T-case drained most of what was supposed to be in there.
