What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Been busy with work and life but Friday morning I happened upon my neighbor in our parking g garage with - you guessed it - a broken lower ball joint on the passenger side of her 97 Limited 2WD, 197K miles.

She was in a bind so I offered to help her and that evening I swapped both LBJs for her with Toyota parts from the local dealer. She was lucky it happened at basically at 0 MPH as there was zero addl damage, but her UBJ looked like it was getting dry, so it's on her list to have replaced.

Anyway, another PSA for LBJ replacement before they break and bite you, or worse.

Well damn, aren't you the perfect neighbor?

Isn't UBJ greasable or na?

My shifter was ridiculously loose and rattling. Opened up the assembly and found blue/green pieces of this bushing. Went to the dealer to get the new bushings. $4.23 each. Ugh. Online they were only $1.20 but I couldn't wait. Easy install thanks to the write up I found on this forum. Shifter feels brand new now! Highly recommend doing this. Thanks y'all.

Chasing down issue

4runner has been in the shop for 2 weeks. Chasing down some issues.
1. Misfire. Swapped plugs, wires, ignition coils and replaced all injectors with five0motorsports injectors. came out running like a champ BUT....
2. Long crank issue after 4runner gets warm(no issues with cold starts)....after searching this site decided to replace fuel pump. Fuel pump goes in today hope it solves the issue...:redbrick:

damn dude, OEM on the new ignition coils, or aftermarket? Those are NOT cheap for OEM.

And all new injectors too? You could have had the OEM ones rebuilt/tested for flow/etc.

Also, is all this being done at a shop? Fuel pump is a PITA job. They gonna charge you a pretty penny for it.

OEM on coils. It's my DD so thought it would be a quick swap and fix. The fuel pump has been the issue the last couple of days. Rust build up. They had to pull the tank and send out for repairs so didn't have to spend on new tank. I do business with the shop for work so they hook me up on work for my personal vehicles. Lucky on my part to have some honest mechanics...especially around Chicago...

Went to the junk yard today for some smalls.

Got some fender lights off a Land Rover, going to mount them on the side of the fenders something like this

Finally got the right Homelink , first one I got didn’t work with my new garage door opener.

Didn’t want to hack up the visor so I mounted it elsewhere. Just need to paint it to match now. Wired it so it’s only hot when key is on.

Nice work! It's probably too late now, but for the Homelink, '01-02 Limiteds had them built into the driver visor, which makes for a clean install. They are also nicer quality and feel than the other visors, yet fit right into any 3rd gen.

I grabbed one from the junkyard and am really happy with it. Of course I did that after getting just a homelink kit (like yours) and installing it into the headliner. Now I have six homelink buttons, unless I want to have a hole in my headliner or get a new one (which is what I'll probably do).

Anyway, the '01-02 Limited Homelink visor seems to be the best kept 4runner secret for some reason.

After four months of "ownership" of my truck, found out that I may not be able to ever register/title it, and may have to "take it back to the dealer I bought it from". Very funny, after I spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours modding it over the past few months. More to follow, and the whole thing may resolve itself, but for now it's time for some beer...:pout:

The problem was/is that I got some new fancy garage door opener that will only work with 2012 or newer homelink thingy. First one I got was from an 08, that will apparently work with the rolling code model openers but not the newer style unless you buy a bridge or some adapter to plug into the opener. I didn’t want to go that route. This is the second one I got and both times you literally have to destroy the visor the get it out. This one is from a 2012 Dodge Caravan.

Ah, ok then - that completely makes sense :thumb:

What? Smog related? You can't drop a bomb like that and not leave at least a breadcrumb.

Bring it to South Carolina. They are East Bound and Down, and titles, naaa, no need for them. Emissions, that is just hocum (urban dictionary here). :hunter:

That sucks man. I would have thought the DMW would have been able to tell you that after paying the property tax and before getting tags....

Yeah, I know, I wasn't going to say anything until I knew more, because the whole thing may go away. Or my truck might go away. One of the two. So for now I'm stuck not wanting to put any more money into it, since it may be throwing good money after bad, and I may not know for sure for another few weeks. How's that for suspense?

But in two words (because it is unfair to not throw out any bread crumbs), it's potentially title related, specifically CA DMV paperwork.

I bought this truck from a used car dealer who seemed (and still seems) legit. I normally would never buy a car from a used car dealer, but this was his personal vehicle, owned since new, and the dealer seemed (seems) like a decent guy (an oxymoron for sure). I bought the truck and took it home - the guy said that he'll take care of all the paperwork and I'll get the new registration and title in a couple of months.

Well first I got called into a DMV office to do a "physical inspection". Fine, they were very nice, filled out a form, and sent me on my way.

Then I got a temp registration, so I was happy. Then I got a thick packet of CA DMV forms which made no sense to me, other than the top form saying something about "Vehicle report too old, must obtain new vehicle report" (or something like that).

So I called DMV and got passed around about 3 departments before ending up in the (drumroll) Lien Sale Office, who told me that the truck was sold at a Lien sale a couple of years ago but the paperwork was not filed within 30 days as it has to be. WTF? What Lien Sale?

So I called the dealer, who told me that yes, the truck was sold at a lien sale because it was registered in the company's name, which is owned by his wife, but they are divorcing/ed, blah blah blah. He said no worries, DMV screwed up, he'll take care of it.

A month passed, no title, so I called my "friends" at the DMV Lien Sale department. Unfortunately things went from bad to worse. The nice lady, after researching for 10 minutes, got back on the phone and said that the truck was not properly sold, should never have been sold to me, I will never be able to register or title it, and that (get this) the lien sale must be redone, complete with public notice, bidding, and all that jazz. She said I should try to get my money back and she was really sorry. I said that I put in thousands into it, and she said "oh, sorry". Yay.

So I called the dealer, who said that it's all a mistake, the DMV people are idiots, and he'll straighten it out. Soon. Maybe. He also said that if I want to bring it back, he'd give me my money back. I said that I put in thousands of dollars into it, to which he said "oh, well that's on you". Can't really argue with that.

So that's where we are. With no offense to anybody, who do I believe, DMV or used car dealer? Seems like a race to the bottom.

I guess I'll give him a week and see what happens. I was actually going to post a new thread here on this issue, but other than a shoulder to cry on (which does count for a lot, especially from the rest of you who know what it's like to pour thousands of dollars and hours into our rigs), what expertise would I expect back (unless someone here is an expert on lien sales and contract law).

I did some googling on this and was happy (shocked?) to find many examples of folks buying used cars and finding out about pre-existing liens, so I'm not the first. There do appear to be some legal remedies if it comes to that, which I am hoping to avoid. We'll see soon enough.

I guess if it has to be resold at a lien sale, I can tear out the interior, take off all the doors, take out a few injectors, tow it in, and say "happy bidding, a$$holes". Then buy it for a song :).

The most ironic part of this whole thing is this - the absolute and only reason we initially bought this 4Runner was, believe it or not, to avoid having to file a lawsuit (long story that I was/am going to post here sometime). In fact, my pet name for the truck is WICTAL, as in "Well It's Cheaper Than A Lawyer" - so how ironic would it be to end up involving lawyers for a truck intended to avoid lawyers to begin with :(.

Your predicament has inspired me to add a new question to my used vehicle pre purchase questionnaire. I have never honestly thought about asking if a vehicle had a lien on it. I sure hope you get you money back, what a mess.
