What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Tbh I’m still kicking myself over not getting more of the interior that thing looked so freakin clean. I should’ve taken my runner with me but it was a last minute thing tbh. At least the stuff went to a cool guy .

It was insanely clean, I have no idea why it was at the yard. And thanks for leaving some stuff for me, but I only took the woodgrain trim, headliner, and carpet. It must have become gutted afterwards. What did you end up taking from it other than the console?

I gotta do that too!

well... the frame was rusted through probably not worth fixing here in cali... and i know it was cali registered because the license plate was still on it.

i took the center console, the driver side sun visor, rear cargo area 12v trim, trim piece at the bottom of the rear bench seat where the bolts go, and rear cargo cover.
And i would've taken the seats and carpet and headliner if i had my runner with me

and about the wood trim its funny because i was actually trying to take it and i removed it from the dash but i accidentally broke the top tabs from it and ditched it altogether  but the 4wd shifter trim i shouldve taken but didnt oh well.

So my washer bottle started leaking from the tires rubbing in it. But a buddy gave me an 84 extracab to take away for scrap and I noticed the washer fluid bottle was small and may fit under the hood of the runner. I didn’t know this, but it fits almost perfectly.

My motor from my 96 fit right in, I lengthened the wiring and it fits in place nice. I need to put a bolt in instead of a self tapper though. Also re routed my intake. As you can see in the photo too. I called the hole through the inner fender, and used the original intake parts to keep the intake inside the engine bay. Not ideal but better than above the tire.

I need to do this, at least the roof rails, but I'm afraid to remove them for fear the threaded inserts will break or leak :bowl:

What paint did you use?

I used Duplicolor bumper and trim in black. I did the wind spoiler a few weeks ago and it turned out great.

I squirted silicone in each of the thread holes and the square pieces under the tabs. Not sure what was in there but there wasn't anything in there when I pulled it off. It was full of bits of trees and seeds and tons of dirt.

Probably worth taking it off every few years just to clean under neath it.

It's more comfortable to set in the seat than lie on the ground ratcheting a screwdriver 1/4" turns 100 times, twice

Makes sense. My problem when I lie underneath it is I end up spending 1/2 hour looking at things. So in the end probably less time to pull the brake 600 times.

first thing...Mine runs about 190 via a cheap bluetooth obd reader for my phone. so yours is a tad hot (Im in 100 degree texas atm). also, your oil...did you let it sit for awhile before checking? It should be close to operating temp, BUT it also needs time to settle/drain back into the pan to get a correct reading. 10 minutes? maybe a bit longer? as long as its still warm when checking

Yeah it sat a while. It was on a slight incline but not much. Today I did an oil change and strangely almost as much came out as went in and after filling it it was halfway between low and high on the dipstick.

So now I'm just praying I don't have a head gasket issue. I don't think I do but I'm an overheating head gasket hypochondriac now. I'll put in the new fan clutch before I do anything hard with it and monitor the temp all the time. And I'll put one of those aluminum radiators.

I've been getting a little noise out of the rear axle. Varies on engine torque (accel/coast/deccel).

So I took the rear driveshaft off. And the rear u-joint was a little notchy on one of the directions. Cardan joint was perfectly fluid and fine. So about 40 minutes of tapping/hammering/etc with a couple of sockets of different sized and replaced the u-joint.

Then I spun one of the wheels with the driveshaft off. There's still something going on in there. I don't think it's the wheel bearings, they were replaced only a year ago (5K miles?) and while it's possible they were damaged on installation (if the machine shop pushed on the outer race, for example) this sound seems to be coming from the differential. Possibly from the pinion bearings. No leaks, full of oil, no perceptible slack in the pinion bearings at all. But still, it's a grumbling sound when one wheel is spun.

I didn't want to mess with that right now, so I put the driveshaft back on. Drive it around, the stiff u-joint (brinelled bearing surfaces on the arms the diff side) was apparently making *some* of the noise. But some remains.

I got *SUPER* lucky a few months ago at a pick-n-pull and managed to snag a locker diff for super cheap. Plans are to look that over *very* carefully and decide on getting it rebuilt or not, then swapping it out and making my noisy one the 'emergency backup' diff.
Spent the weekend swapping rear differentials.

I was rotating the tires and with the wheels off, crawled around underneath and listened to the original diff a bit more carefully. Definitely a bearing noise from the pinion. Still not the slightest perceptible slack in the bearing, but a definite rumble, one that coincides with the noises it's been making while driving lately. The new u-joint I replaced a couple of weeks ago helped some, but it still wasn't good.

So I looked over my junkyard diff, trying to decide whether or not to have it rebuilt before installing it. Gears looked great, more importantly, gear lash seemed to be nice and tight. While this diff wa a bit oily on the outside for some reason, there wasn't any real sign of oil coming out of the pinion seal.

So I decided to just put it on as is. I had the usual amount of salt-belt grief pulling the old diff out of the axle housing - most of the studs pulled out of the housing, but one of the ones that remained (not one of the two long ones that hold the locker actuator on, though) was being a PITA. I did remember to lock it first - the diff won't come out of the housing in the unlocked position, and it's nice to have the actuator and diff in the same state for reassembly.

Then lots of scraping on the axle housing and new diff to remove the old gasket.

My junkyard diff came without an actuator - someone had visited it in the junkyard before me and snagged that (but not the diff???) so I had to swap it over. I thought I was being very careful, but... I cracked that back plate. It's ridiculously easy to do. Fortunately enough, it isn't actually that structurally significant, since the outer housing bolts down on top of it.

Either way, I thought I really should take it apart to check for water damage - it was nice and clean inside. No signs of water entry ever. Just some dried looking grease. I cleaned that out, added fresh lithium grease, and cleaned the mildly cracked back plate really well and used some JB-Weld on the cracks to (hopefully) keep water out in the future. Then reseated the o-ring with a little RTV and put it all back together.

And now? No more geary noises while driving, either accelerating or under engine braking. Nice and quiet. In retrospect this really has been making noises for a very long time, perhaps 10 - 15K miles? It just sort of started slowly and quietly, and I sort of got used to it making some gear noises, it only very slowly got to the point where I finally perceived it as something wrong. Since the pinion bearings still have no apparent slop in them, they'd probably still last 10's of thousands of miles more.

We'll just keep it as an emergency spare. Since it's possible we won't need it, no point in spending $$$ having it rebuilt, it would work in a pinch.

This morning Nathasha didn't want to move...

Knocking and almost dying whenever I put it into gear.

It was raining most of the night and it did the same thing a few weeks ago when wet/cold.

Then surprize CEL once it was running smoother...

So I swapped the sparks because I already bought them, might as well.
I didn't reset the CEL to check it with a reader tomorrow at work.

Here are what I suspect the original plugs from Japan... 256000 km on them (just shy of 160k miles).

Pretty sure the hail storm that just rolled through here totalled it. Broken windshield and a ton of dents all over from the looks of it. Hopefully insurance totals it out so I can buy it back cheap and keep driving it.

Sorry to hear that. Random hail storms freak me out more than most anything other than clueless drivers on the road

This is the 3rd major hail storm around Denver in the last year or so, but first one that did any damage to my stuff. Not too upset about it though, since hopefully this funds some more armor and stuff.

Just bought all the components to replace the entire A/C system. Wasn't working when I bought it, and considering there was no belt and the compressor pulley was gunked up with the remains of the last belt, figure good time to do the whole system.

found the unicorn hood with scoop at the pick'n-pull yard this morning, and grabbed some steel wheels, still need a 4th

Saw a mud hill in a construction site, couldn't resist

There's a small construction site in my area where the developers cut down a ton of forest to build houses. So in the mean time I go there every once in a while to go for a quick rip.
There aren't any signs prohibiting the having of fun, so I figure I'll have as much fun as I can before the new houses get built.
