What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Today I'm building up the courage to replace my power steering pump by watching youtube videos and reading the manual. I don't have a lot of experience working on vehicles other than a pos '87 Bronco II, so stop me if this is a lot harder than it looks. The cost my mechanic quoted me was quite high for a piece I can get at the salvage yard for $65.

Edit: Will a '98 power steering pump fit my 2000? Everything I'm reading says yes.

I highly recommend doing a flush and reservoir screen cleaning before you replace the pump.

I too thought my 98 Limited PS pump was going bad (whining) but found out after seeing the above video that my pump was starved for fluid because the reservoir screen in mine was 80% clogged.

I should have mentioned in my first post that my mechanic says it has a small crack and is leaking a bit. I check the fluid levels weekly, but after the first time I filled it, I have not noticed a drop in fluid.

Got some rear mud guards off craigslist. I Gave up on the dream of finding the discontinued SR5 front one's so took off all the flare and going to put on these kind instead.

Put the panavise back on which I initially hated but it works fine for my phone.

Moved tablet to where phone used to be.

Sunglasses holder fell off so fixed with a 1/8 roll pin I squished smaller in a vise.

Got the fire extinguisher bolted in. I had to cut off the top off the mount so I could rotate it for a better fit. Seems ok.

Headers on, new valve job, rear springs and stops

I was going to put these LCE headers on my 3rz a month back, then needed said valve job. Just got 'em on, real beauties. These, coupled with an engine in top shape at 150k, definitely feeling zippy on the high desert hills.
Also, while i was getting the valve job, they noticed a recall for rear coils and a few other parts back there. This made an unbelievable difference in my ride. Shocks are 4mo old OEM and with the new springs and stops it feels better than the new rental I was driving. Shame they won't stay in long;)
Coupla pics just cause I obviously don't know how to make these puppies little smaller.

I just drove mine a bit today. My DD was totaled 2 weeks ago, so now I have to use the 'Runner for everything. I received a text from the guy that purchased my old '01 Limited, apparently he recently traded it in on a 5th gen but kept a bunch of parts from it and was giving me 1st dibbs on anything. He has a set of factory manuals, but they're for the '01 so I don't think they'd be much use to me.

Wouldn't start yesterday; all I got was a click from the starter when I turned the key. Having browsed these forums relentlessly over the years I knew my starter contacts were gone. Grabbed a hammer from the back, and using my old wooden ice scraper as a punch, gave the starter a whole bunch of whacks until she finally started :heh:

I won't be driving anywhere until that's fixed. The stealerships around here quoted me $150+ for the solenoid, battery contact, and starter contact and the parts would even be here until Wednesday... The auto parts stores don't sell the aftermarket kits or the parts anymore.

So I ordered the Victory Lap ND-36SOL solenoid repair kit off amazon for $30; also Wednesday but waaay cheaper.

I came across a whole bunch of confusion on the matter on the forums today so hopefully I can clear it up. Our 3rd gens come with either a 1.4kW or 1.8kW starter. From what I have gathered, the 1.4kW is for manuals and the 1.8kW is for autos.

The 1.4kW starter is Toyota part #28100-62050, Denso part #228000-5300(I think).
It's plunger is Toyota part #28235-55050.
It's motor contact is Toyota part #28226-74070.
It's battery contact is Toyota part #28226-64200.
The Victory Lap ND-34SOL is for the 1.4kW starter.
The Dorman 02349 Starter Rebuild Kit *might* work for the 1.4kW starter.

The 1.8kW starter is Toyota part #28100-62030, Denso part #228000-4083.
It's plunger is Toyota part #28235-54380.
It's motor contact is Toyota part #28226-72010.
It's battery contact is Toyota part #28226-54380.
The Victory Lap ND-36SOL is for the 1.8kW starter.

Some of the part #s might have been changed, but these #s should get you there.

Did a couple of things today. PO had bypassed stock transmission cooler when he added an external, it wasn't providing enough cooling when I was towing or going up steep grades, so I put it back in line. Plan going forward is to replace radiator every 100k to be on the safe side. While I had the skid plates off, I went ahead and changed the oil and filter. Lastly I did the quickest mod of all time to keep my 12v sockets live all the time.

They come with the ARB 3423020 bumper kit. They are used for something when installing on a Tacoma, but are extras on the 4runner. So it works perfectly to box the end of the frame.

Nice, where did you get the end caps?

Got rid of the running boards finally! Looks so much better now.
Replaced rear sway bar and end link bushings.
Got under the center console and replaced the shifter bushings. Also made a small adjustment to the linkage underneath. Replacing those shifter bushings was a bit of a process, but well worth it!
Washed it and vacuumed.

ATF Overfilled?

So to preface, I'm not entirely sure that I know what's going on with my 98 LTD (3rd Gen). The interwebs seem to refer to the issue as "rumble strip", and that seems to describe the issue pretty well.

So some backstory: ever since spring, when I installed a K/N CAI, after or during a heavy rain I get a "rumbly" sensation at ~1500-ish RPM. This has largely subsided, but still occurs now and then. My searches pertaining to this issue turn up things like "leaking vacuum hose", but I'm fairly confident that this was not the case. I thought it was something more like water rushing behind the passenger-side headlight and getting sucked up by the CAI.

On my way to VA a couple of months ago, I checked the ATF while pumping fuel, and it seemed a little on the low side. When I reached Heathsville, I topped 'er off, and everything seemed fine until I got back to Knoxville five weeks later. I also took two trips to D.C. during this five-week period with no issue (unless it was raining heavily, in which case, see above).

Back to the present: the "rumble strip" phenomenon seems to occur in third gear, but it's sporadic. Some days it doesn't happen at all, others, it happens constantly. So I checked the ATF, and it appears high (at the lower "hot" mark after sitting overnight). I'm not sure what to do about this. I suppose I could withdraw some ATF to get it closer to the perfect volume and eliminate that vairable, but I'm worried that I may be beginning to lose 3rd gear.

So that's what I'm doing to my 3rd gen today....troubleshooting. lol

Are you leaving your tow hooks off? I took mine off because I won't need them anymore and need to know if I should re-thread bolts in those holes? I don't know if the bolts served any other purpose other than to hold the tow hooks. Thanks for any help you can offer.

The bolts only hold the tow hooks on. If there are no tow hooks, there is no reason for the bolts to be there.

On the ARB bumper I’m using, those bolts are re-used for the new mounting brackets as well.

In preparation for my 4runner's 300k birthday I changed out the following original parts with OEM parts:
Motor mounts, transmission mount, and A\C compressor.

I also replaced the plugs (Denso IK22) and coils, amazon knock offs, with some Denso units.
