What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Thanks, I bought 6 quarts of ATF, planning on buying more after seeing how burnt that is and anticipating how many flushes I'm going to do.

It takes 3 gallons to do a complete flush using a low pressure pump to push the fluid in as the transmission pumps it out. I just let the car run in neutral (see Timmy's video on this) as I run the pump switching from one gallon jug to the next until I see clean red fluid running out the return line into a catch can. Clear tubing is a must on this project. I used the $18 Walmart pump I bought online listed below. Being low pressure means it isn't doing a high pressure flush which might dislodge debris which can cause problems. It just does what the trans normally does in circulating the fluid. I usually over pump the old fluid out so I generally have to add another quart or so. On these 4Runners I am able to drain the one or two quarts of fluid out of the pan first to make it easier to exchange the fluid. I also installed an inline Magnafine trans filter on the return line when I was done because I didn't drop the pan, clean the magnet, and change the screen/filter. That's a project for another time.

did you also recently cut a hole and add a compressor, do you have a cover for it ?
Yes, I am going to secure the cover with magnets but I'm looking for some kind of trim to go around the perimeter. I also have a 3 gallon tank that I'm going to put where the fuel filter is but I haven't gotten around to moving it yet. I did the whole dash switch with a relay and a pressure gauge thing just to make my Jeep friend jealous. LOL

3rd brake light bulb upgrade

Changed the 3rd brake light bulb to one of these VLEDS bulbs, been running the same on my 1st-gen Tundra for a while. Pricey, but they're currently 25% off and are a lot brighter than the standard incandescent and other 921 LEDs I've tried. I also used a Mothers Power Ball and plastic polish to bring the shine back to the lens.

About to take it for a ride to see if the ABS warning light turns on and/or the cruise control still functions. I've read converting all the brake lights to LED may cause these issues, have a load resistor arriving tomorrow if the issue(s) arise.

UPDATE: No ABS light, cruise control functioning normally :)

Tightened the rear brakes hurt my back in the process. Take care of your back when your young kids one surgery sticks with you a lifetime. Prepped center caps for paint

After doing the rear last weekend, got the front today (along with a winch)

If your 4R has the immobilizer (black plastic and metal key, "security" light just above the AC controls that blinks normally and goes out when the key is inserted) ~ then you Probably have the Toyota factory installed (vs the more aftermarket-like dealer installed) version. Those control units are found in the tailgate area. Most folks just go ahead and buy a remote, then try to program. The one you're looking for has an FCC code of HYQ1512Y and the image of a window on the bottom button. You have 3 main options, 100% OEM, OEM electronics in an aftermarket housing and 100% aftermarket. The only complaints I've seen were all about the 100% aftermarket units (I have 2 OEM and one OEM w/ aftermarket housing that all work perfectly).

Be aware that you'll need to get into programming mode for any/all new remotes. Meaning that if you buy one to test, find it works and then want to add more, you'll have to do it all again. I'd say it's reasonably certain that you have the keyless entry, so if you want 2 then buy 2 right away.

There are some "tricks" to getting into programming mode. The biggest is that the actuators work better when cold, so trying first thing in the morning is what worked for me. The next is that you can replace the motor within your current actuators, I seem to remember those being ~$7/each (there's a thread or 8 about that). Some people who were only having issues with the drivers door, were able to "assist" with the key in the lock and moving the lock that way.

Sadly, there's no way to program the things from Techstream (dealer software, you can get a copy from Amazon for about $30, or China for about $15) for the 3rd gen.
I spent the better part of the day replacing the actuator motors....got 3 of the 4 done and I am stopping for the day. Just been one of those days.

I tired to program the key fobs and had no luck. Brian mentioned a security light above the AC, only thing I see is this one to the left of the steering wheel. I don't know that I've ever seen it lite up. Any other pointers to look for to make sure I actually have the keyless entry option?

Also added indoor plumbing for the winch :)

Currently driving across Canada towing my RV with my 4Runner. We decided to leave the RV at camp and do a little day trip to St. Mary’s Lake outside of Cranbrook BC. Tons of gorgeous dirt roads and some more rugged logging roads to explore.

Slowly making Link more “roadworthy” by butting on some 4th gen wheels and taking the roof rack off temporarily.

4th gen wheels with great tires were an awesome price at $100! Plenty of tread left and the wheels are in surprisingly great condition!

My 4Runner is officially broken-in!

Replaced the radiator, thermostat, and v-belts. Also changed the oil for good measure.

Where did you put your back up camera monitor?

I have an Android head unit (Car Joying - made with the best, well sort of, Chinesium). It has an input for a rear camera. Camera is powered off of backup light which also is used to trigger the head unit to switch to the cam view. It's just a cheap license plate camera, got on e-Bay for under $15. We'll see how long it lasts

Got around to doing the clay/wax/sealant routine. Still cleans up pretty well for 20 years old!

Helped a buddy and fellow member clean up his golden pearl with the same treatment. Looked amazing for all that it gets put through!

Replaced the driveshaft (2WD) with an aftermarket steel shaft, no more annoying clunk or vibration. Makes the whole drive feel so much better.
